Abstract

The main question being raised in this paper is what is local history? Does local history stand by itself or is it part of the national history? What is the different between local history with, say, national history? Does local history have its own theory, concept and methodology which are different that other histories? These questions have more meaning if thet are related to what Taufik Abdulah (1985) and Sarono Kartodirdjo (1993) said that local history is not a local version of national history and national history is not the sum of local histories. Local history and national history are intertwined but each has its own methodology, concept and scope that are different with others‟. This paper elucidates these issues using south Sulawesi histories.  Keywords: historiography, local history, south Sulawesi.

Abstract

The 1945-1949 Indonesian Revolution was a historic time and place, especially for those who witnessed and experienced such a terrible event. Through his novel entitled Durga Umayi (1991), Y.B. Mangunwijaya or Father Mangun, were able to narrate the steps of the nationalist women. Although committed "not a man", but the fictional character "Iin", "Tiwi", or whatever his name is, can show that the Indonesian Revolution that began with the Proclamation of Independence 17-81945 is very controversial. With structural and semantic studies from A.J. Greimas, it became apparent that the nationalism of women from Java was filled with imaginations that might not have been imagined at all.  Keywords: Durga Umayi, Revolution 1945-1949, Iin/Tiwi

Abstract

Indonesia is a unique country that has thousands of islands. This unique wants to signify the diversity of ethnic groups and languages in Indonesia. Jean Gelman Taylor in her book, Indonesia. Peoples and Histories (2003), believes that with the diversity of ethnic groups and languages in Indonesia, there are many stories or history of all these ethnic groups that have not even been revealed at all. Of course, this is a "loss" for national history and the identity of certain ethnic groups when talking about "becoming Indonesia"; bearing in mind "being Indonesia" is a form of power over causal relations in observable social interaction, which can provide a strong foundation for Indonesia. However, apart from these beliefs, Indonesia with a variety of ethnic groups and languages, of course, has a long journey or a long history of unifying these ethnic groups. This paper will look back (read: history) to investigate the vision that became the common ground for the formation of Indonesia, as well as a reference in laying a solid foundation for Indonesia today (after independence).  Keywords: Nasionalism, Vision, Landscape, History, hybrid, Power.

Abstract

Throughout the 20th century, Makassar city continued to practice the ideas of modernity both in its physical development of the city and in its social and cultural life. In this context, urban problems developed both environmentally and socially. Some prominent aspects were violence and crime which grew more complex over time. Violence appeared in discriminatory attitudes in the space management and use. If in the colonial period, discriminatory attitudes were based on nationality and skin color, in the independence era, discriminatory attitudes most felt by residents who did not have access to the power. Modernization of the city seems to overlook comprehensive and sustainable improvement of urban kampungs. In the long-term environmental damages such as floods, fires, and infectious diseases occurred. Weak enforcement to control the practice of prostitution and gambling also caused violence and criminal acts. Other forms of crime such as theft, fighting, murder, robbery, inter-kampung war or juvenile delinquency occurred in all parts of the city, both during the day and at night. Various forms of violence and crime are anomalies of the ideals of a modern city. In certain conditions, violence and crime created as an accumulation of "disappointment" of the modernization project. This condition created alienation or displacement of individuals in the culture of modern (city). It occurred because there was widespread “inequality” in various forms, such as injustice, helplessness or inability to face (transformation in) the new age. These modern Makassar city anomalies are like irony experienced in urban spaces, villages, and people's lives.   Keywords: Anomalies, Crime, Modern Makassar City, Violence, 20th Century “

Abstract

The research method using autoetnography is a research method that is still fairly new to be used in social research, especially in Indonesia. There are still many debates and criticisms aimed at this method, among others are very high subjectivity, problems regarding the code of ethics in research, lack of analysis, and researchers do not need to go to the field as in usual research. This paper is an argument about the method of autoetnography as an academic, valid, and analytical research method in social research, especially in cultural studies.  Keywords: Autoethnography, Research Method

Abstract

High-caste women in Bali are sometimes not considered subalterns, because they have economic, symbolic and social capital that distinguishes them from Sudra-caste women. In fact, women of high caste have complex problems in choosing their life partners, due to disciplining of cultural capital in the form of tradition. Abstract

This paper will discuss about the mass movement that was held in Japan in 1945 after World War II to the 1970s when the Vietnam War issue arose. The period which was very important for the Japanese people at that time determined their vision and mission after being defeated in World War II which led to pacifism or anti-war. The mass movement carried out by the Japanese people at that time was included in the phenomenon of democracy which was inseparable from the American occupation at that time. This paper was published using the Rikkyo campus newspaper in 1954-1967 and also books and journals used as historical information. With this writing, it is hoped that the reader will become more aware of Japanese society in 1945 through the 1970s as was the mass movement that occurred at that time.  Keywords: Japanese mass movement, pacifism, democracy
