Abstract

Since 1991, talks on ASEAN regional integration grew tremendously and the weight of ASEAN countries in the world economy kept increasing. This became more pronounced in the growing interlinkages between ASEAN countries through Free Trade Agreements (FTA) that aimed to augment investment in the region and promote further economic liberalization. The ASEAN economic community starting in 2015 leads the way to even more opportunities to create “EU-like” region, having a common currency area. However the failures of the EU to cope with the recent global crisis and the substantial differences between this region vis à vis ASEAN raises many doubts. How would common currency area be feasible in ASEAN context and would it benefit the region in terms of economic development? The aim of this paper is to analyse the current achievements in the ASEAN in forming a unified bloc and the feasibility of a single currency in the region based on the Optimal Currency Area (OCA) criteria. Furthermore, it will examine possible alternatives that will help catalyse ASEAN economic integration, such as: tapping into smaller groupings among member states with more uniformed monetary policy and business cycle, ASEAN Swap Arrangements (ASA) and regional surveillance mechanism, adopting common currency peg, among others.

Abstract

Today’s International Relations perspectives mostly dominated by eurocentric point ofview. These perspectives, become the core of IR studies and not realized by scholars from many non-Western countries in the studies and keep them away from their own“realities” in their analysis. The rise of Global IR opens some new possibilities to develop an inclusive perspective where non-Western might have their own point of view based on their own context. Using Global IR as a stepping stone, this article tries to elaborate the history of Makassar in the 17th century and its place in Southeast Asia history and to connect it with the rise of ASEAN.

Abstract

This writing describes several important arguments from Julian Nida-Rümelin concerning academisation madness, which happens in United States and European Union. It shows also the relevance of this argument for Indonesia. This academisation madness can be seen clearly in the obsession of academic title as a result of university education. At the same time, the skilled labor education that is created specifically for certain line of jobs is being forgotten or underestimated. This madness happens, because of the misunderstanding of the society and government concerning the true meaning of education, and how educational policies have direct social, political and economic consequences in reality. Nida-Rümelin provides a deep analysis concerning this matter. He argues also about the importance of government and public wide recognition on the value of skilled education in comparison with academic education. Both have different focus but possess the same philosophical paradigm, namely education as personality development. This article offers also several critical considerations to Nida-Rümelin’s arguments.

Abstract

Today, the phenomenon of globalization brings impact not only on the positive side, the seafarers have a negative side. Regarding the problem of the international regime that is more directed to the economy of capitalism, this paper raises the question of the right to the city as opposed to the development of capitalism conditions that control the world today. There have been many articles that have been discussed previously regarding the uploading of the right to the city that is considered to reject the state of capitalism and what the city's rights should be fulfilled in this regard. Two writings about Harvey and Henri Lefebvre, from the writings and ideas of these two writers set out to write about the issue of the right to the city that is now more prevalent. Given the need for a movement to aspire to the issue of the rights to this city, the writer feels the need to describe how non-state actors currently have an existence that rivals the state. The non-state actors are in the form of social movements related to the right to upload city right ie Right To The City Alliance. This movement is a social movement that is shaped as a response to urbanization in urban areas with all the impacts of urban life. Every city in the world desires a change for its sake, but the development that is carried on has caused much discrimination for the urban. This is because the city is considered as a place of dominant class competition. The eviction, discrimination of women, the homeless, and the right of ownership of the land is the result of the hegemony of capitalist knowledge. In response to the problem by appointing right to the city from Harvey's thinking and Henri Lefebvre Right to The City Alliance came into existence as an urban revolution inspired the city's right. Because the city is not only a spatial space but also a social space for the urban.

Abstract

This article describes the effective application of Sucre, as Latin American regional currencies in ALBA, and its impact on the Venezuelan economy. This study uses primary data collected by interviews and secondary data gathered by studying document obtained from the official website of ALBA, financial institutions in Latin American countries as well as website for analysis about Latin America. The results showed that the presence of Sucre on the economy of Venezuela is less effective at improving economy of Venezuela. This is caused partly because ALBA is ineffective in promoting Sucre to all its member states and strong counter-opinions made by United States towards ALBA.
