Abstract

Geothermal is one of renewable energy that can be used in electric power plant.Although categorized as safe to the environment, but some parameter should be considered ifwant to develop as power plant in a big scale. Some aspects should be considered are steamcontains and physical characteristic of the steam in the reservoir and the pressure drop in theground reservoir while using geothermal. If all parameters could be full filled, thegeothermal energy can be used as electrical power plant without any complaint.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the use of rice husk ash as a landfillcover on the quantity and characteristics of leachate generated from landfill lysimeter. Threelysimeters with diameter and height of 0,15 and 2 m, respectively, were prepared. Two lysimeterswere filled with municipal waste and two different cover types i.e. soil (lysimeter A) andricehusk ash (lysimeter B) while another lysimeter was filled solely with municipal waste(lysimeterC). Leachate quantities and characteristics were measured and determined once aweek. The cumulative leachate quantity from the lysimeter B was found to 69,33% and 43,93%lessthan the lysimeter C and Arespectively.Therewereno any differencesof the pH value oftheleachate generated from all lysimeters. The comparison of the leachate characteristicsshowedthat the lysimeter B generate the TSS concentrations 45,95% and 52,93% less thanthelysimeter C and Arespectively, however the TDS concentrations were130,73% and 60,91%morethan lysimeter C and Arespectively. In addition, the use of rice husk ash as a landfillcovercould reduce ± 85% of organic matter in the leachate generated.

Abstract

The government of Denpasar City has organized Gajahmada Street and Kamboja Street through the project of pavement which has cost a lot. Physical, functional, role, quality and visual degradations as well as the decrease in the shopping activities and the damaged shapes of the buildings have led to this policy. To overcome such problems, the space quality has been improved with reference to the scale of pedestrians. Having been conducted for about one year, it is time to evaluate the project. The objectives are to identify whether the project has been successful as expected and whether esthetic and function have been given priority. The approach applied was physical trace observation (Zeisel, 1995) which was combined with the analysis of secondary data (the document containing the planning and comparative study of the area of pedestrians of La Rambla in Barcelona) which was then analyzed and interpreted. The results of the field and data analysis show that the plans which had been made to support the project of pavement of the two corridors was not in accordance with what had been expected. As the illustrations, the change of the traffic current was not carried out and the capacity of and accessibility to the parking center were still problems. These were the principle issues which should be paid attention to if the two corridors were expected to be the ones for the pedestrian. The other thing to which attention was not paid to was the attractiveness of the corridors (something to see, something to buy and something to do). In addition, the pedestrian’s motivation was not explored either. These are all seen at La Rambla, Barcelona. The conclusion which can be withdrawn from this study is that what has been planned for Gajahmada Street and Kamboja Street has given more priority to their aesthetics than functions. It is suggested that in the future a deep analysis should be made in the macro planning before every physical planning is made. After that, architectural, technical and aesthetic planning is made.

Abstract

The environmental impacts due to technology applications have been an interesting issue for researchers and engineers worldwide. Innovations in development of environmentally friendly technology have been implemented to minimise severe consequences of the impacts, including in electricity generation technology. It has been known that the use of fossil fuel will increase the emission of greenhouse gasses, such as SO2, NO and CO2. A strong regulation for emission of greenhouse gasses has imposed a great extent of efforts in reducing the emitted gases. At present, the electricity need for Penida island is mainly generated using diesel generating system. The use of large amount of diesel oil for electricity generation certainly increases the emitted greenhouse gasses. This paper discusses an alternative technology in wind energy utilisation for electricity generation at Penida Island. The position of Penida island, which is in the ocean front region, yields a high potential use of wind energy for electricity generation. The analysis results show that at the Penida Island, the electricity may be produced with a maximum power of 50kW from a single wind turbine. In order to fulfil the total electrical energy need for the island, it is required to develop hundreds of turbines. Development of this amount of wind turbines certainly produces other related environmental impacts, such as ecological impacts, visual aesthetics and generated noises.

Abstract

In order to understand the fishing gear characteristics of “garuk”, a traditional fishing gear in North Java Sea, study about species selectivity of garuk has been conducted in Cirebon, West Java. Using Shannon-Diversity Index and Dominance Index analysis the catch diversity and dominancy were analyzed. The result analysis showed that the number of species diversity of garuk varied between 0.8 – 1.2. On the other hand, result analysis of dominance index showed that the number varied between 0.3 – 0.5. This result indicated that garuk has low selectivity to target species.
