Abstract

The present study examines learners' strategies in a basic speaking class at Kampung Inggris Jogja to overcome communication breakdowns and effectively convey their ideas and messages to their interlocutors. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the achievement strategies within the framework of Celce-Murcia et al. (1995) in the classroom interactions among the learners at Kampung Inggris Jogja. A qualitative methodology, specifically discourse analysis of spoken interactions, was utilized to analyze the collected data. Data was gathered through observation of the learners' interactions and recording of their conversations. The investigation revealed that the learners at Kampung Inggris Jogja utilized various achievement strategies in their interactions. However, the foreignizing strategy was not observed among the participants. The strategies most frequently employed by the learners included code-switching, literal translation, non-linguistic means, restructuring, and retrieval. Additionally, the study indicated that learning activities, topics, and environments significantly impacted the learners' communication. Internal factors, such as vocabulary mastery, knowledge of proper grammar, and motivation, played a crucial role in the learners' speaking performance. It is essential to acknowledge the limitations of this study and recognize the need for further research to build upon these findings. Nevertheless, the results of this study contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the strategies utilized by learners to overcome communication problems and have implications for language teaching and learning in similar contexts. The study highlights the significance of the findings for future research and language education.

Abstract

The concept of equivalent refers to how closely a language's source and target work in a certain situation. By rating or evaluating a translation's quality, the translator can decide whether it is natural. This study aims to explain the naturalness of the Indonesian translation of the figurative language contained in the novel ‘The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle.’ In order to collect data, the researchers obtained words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that contained figurative language. Leech's (1969) classification of figurative language and Larson's (1998) assessment of the naturalness of translation were used in the analysis of the data, which was done using the content analysis technique. This study measures the naturalness of translation in order to enhance translation rather than criticize the translator. This study identified four levels of naturalness for figurative translation: highly natural level, natural level, less natural level, and unnatural level. It was revealed that the translator offered a highly natural figurative translation. It indicates that the translator succeeded in making the content understandable and making it clear to the reader, preventing readers from realizing the text is a translation. The quality of the natural translation must be evaluated in order to deliver a better translation that will aid the target audience in comprehending the book's content.

Abstract

Using formative assessment to analyze tasks in the textbook is uncommonly used. Textbooks as the primary resources should follow the latest curriculum version in teaching-learning processes. This study aimed at investigating the implementation of formative assessment on speaking and writing activities in the "English for Nusantara" textbook. Qualitative research was used as the approach to collect and analyze the research. Types of speaking and writing assessment in the textbook were analyzed using assessing speaking skills by Brown (2003) and typical formative activity and criteria by Irons (2008). The result showed that the majority of formative assessment tasks used in this textbook are discussions and conversations (interactive speaking), one each type of oral presentation (extensive speaking), and picture-cued tasks (intensive/extensive speaking). In addition to that, the commonly used writing tasks in the textbook are paragraph construction tasks (responsive and extensive writing), short-answer and sentence completion tasks (intensive writing), and guided question and answer. Furthermore, typical formative activities found in the textbook are diagnostic tests, practical exercises, student demonstrations, group discussion/work, student presentations, checklists, and self-assessments. Finally, the findings of this study may provide scientific information about types of formative assessment in the textbook to support teacher practices in the implementation of formative assessment. Finally, future studies are needed to continue this research by using a curriculum guide with varying levels in order to obtain more information regarding the formative assessment.
