TBL, which is used in the treatment is done into 3 cycles: the first cycle has been done by 4 meetings, the second cycle has been done by 4 meetings, and the third cycle has been done by 4 meetings. All the teaching–learning process of RAP is done by collaboration and creativity in preparing materials. It is a result of CAR which is done in Reading Class A Faculty of Letters UAD Yogyakarta from June up to December 2008. To get the data the researcher does an observation, an interview, besides asking the students to fulfilling the form, giving test, and analyzing document. Data validity investigation technique which is used in this research is Data Resource Triangulation and Method Triangulation. Informant Review is also used in Data Validity Test. Reliability Estimation to guarantee the reliability of Data are found by Test and Observation. To analyze the data the researcher uses the result of observation that is reflected and the learning result of the students that is achievement. The technique of analyzing the data is Descriptive Statistic Technique and Critical Analysis to know the improvement of the situation in detail and precisely according to the improving of the treatment in each cycle that is the improvement of the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd cycles. After having the preventative steps of performance by using TBL in RAP which have been done in the first, in the second, and in the third cycles, there is a significant result. It shows that more than 75% of the students who have got good grade with more than 65 scores. There are 20 of 27 students get good scores: 10 students (37,04%) get the score between 66-79 (B); and 12 students (44,44%) get the score between 80-88 (A), and 5 students (18,52%) get C (56-65). Abstract

Discourse of advertisements, especially in printed ads, has shown the development of an extraordinary language phenomenon. A copywriter is able to exploit the language to be used as the media of communicative ads, which is very interesting and persuading. This exploitation of language, especially the mixture of verbal and non-verbal signs, makes discourse of ads an interesting subject to explore and analyze. To study the exploitation of the language in the discourse of ads, there are three main points to learn as proposed by Van Dijk; They are : superstructure, micro structure, and macro structure of the ads. The study shows that, superstructure of an ads should has body copy which shows persuasiveness; in micro structure, the exploitation of verbal aspect intensely applied the grammatical roles of ellipsis, substitution and references; meanwhile in macro structure, an ads could shows remarkable persuasiveness through verbal and visual aspect

Abstract

This writing aims at helping English teaches in Indonesia to view the objective outcome of English language education in Indonesia across the decades since the nation’s independence from the Dutch in 1945. It concentrates on data concerning objectives, content, methods of teaching and the evaluation of teaching/learning English as a foreign language across Senior High School curricula. The discussion emphasizes the evidence of mismatch in the four components of TEFL. Eight curricula are under critical investigation here in the research, except the most recent one namely the 2006 curriculum as it is at present being implemented. The discussion pinpoints a discovery where there has been a case of mismatch in terms of the implementation of English education process across the decades. This may in turn functions as a catalyst to guide and to empower English teachers in their future teaching/lesson plan.

Abstract

Hatam is one of the vernaculars spoken in Papua which is categorized into West Papuan phylum and Eastern bird Head sub phylum of Papuan islands. This article aims to discuss the reduplication system of Hatam in relation to how the reduplicated words are formed, and also to describe Hatam reduplication types, function and the meaning of reduplicated words denote in Hatam. Descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze the collected data. The research finding shows that the reduplication systems of Hatam are formed through free morphemes. There are two types of Hatam reduplication:Full and Partial reduplications. Morphologically, Hatam full reduplication derives concrete nouns from nouns and partial reduplication functions to derive nouns from adjectives and nouns from verbs. Abstract

This study examines the perception of Manggarai speech community (MSC) on the significance of social harmony in terms of cultural linguistics. In accordance with its problem, this study is descriptive-qualitative based on phenomenological philosophy. The methods and techniques of data collection are observation, interview, recording, note-taking, and documentation study. Data was analyzed qualitatively by using inductive method and encoding technique. The result of study shows, there are a number of traditional expressions in Manggarai language and culture conveying the perception of MSC on the significance of social harmony. In terms of the forms and meanings of linguistic phenomena used, such traditional expressions are the cultural oases inherited from the past functioning as moral and ethic guideline for MSC in maintaining social harmony. Recognizing the contents of those traditional expressions have been reduced out of function frame and meaning schema declared by their ancestors, such traditional expression should be documented, so that their social values be maintained according to real substances in the life of MSC nowadays and in the future.

Abstract

This paper studies explicitation as one of the proposed universal of translated text, which can be seen from the rise in the level of cohesive explicitness in the target text. From the corpus of English-Indonesian translation, it is found that conjunctive relations tend to be explicitated in Indonesian TT of expository texts. Although there are also other types of shifts such as implicitation and meaning change, explicitation takes a bigger portion in the TT. Most types of conjunctive relations made more explicit are internal conjunctives, which show relations between meanings in the sense of representation of the speaker’s own ‘stamp’ on the situation and communicative situation of the text, especially the adversative contrastive connectives of avowal which give assertion of veracity and clarification to the text.

Abstract

Social structure and dynamics are to a large extent evidenced in linguistic data. Moreover, linguistic technologisation can serve as an agent of social change. Unfortunately, linguistic data and the accompanying analytical methods developed by linguists appear to be largely ignored by social analists. This article attempts to demonstrate that linguistic analysis, more specifically discourse analysis, can be used as one of the methods of social investigation. This contribution is illustrated through several research studies dealing with hierarchy, bias, and identity. This article also discusses some implications of critical analysis of texts, especially for citizenship and education.

Abstract

Morphological study covers the words formation process such as: derivation, affixation, reduplication and compound. The word formation in every language is the creativity in the forming of new words from the words that are already existed within the language. This writing aims at describing the word formation in English specially reduplication. The data of this writing was taken from English dictionary in order to give description that English has reduplication (words formation) though the numbers are not as many as other types of word formation (affixation, derivation and compound) Reduplication in English shows the change of word identity and the change of category (word class) like in `roly-poly` ( means pudding/noun) which has the base form `poly` means (polytechnic/noun); though the category of `roly poly` and ` poly` are the same (noun) but they have different identity. The change of category happens on the reduplication `hangky-panky`(trickery/adjective) which has the base form `hanky`(handkerchief/noun); it has the change of category from noun becomes adjective.

Linguistically, the development in the basics, however, it often does not obey the basics, therefore it influence it’s scientificity. Sociologically, acronym not only become the short form of phrase or name, but also become the slogan and houmor media. Politically, development of acronym is based on several reasons : (a) communicating identity (region), (b) spiritual natonal and religious motive, (c) myth in the past.
