Abstract

This study investigates the semiotic construction of boycott messages against pro-Israel products on the Instagram account @bdsarabic, situated within the broader discourse of digital activism in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As social media platforms increasingly serve as tools of resistance, the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement strategically utilizes Instagram to disseminate political messages. This study aims to explore how visual and textual elements work together to construct symbolic meanings that influence public sentiment and mobilization. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research applies Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic model of semiotics—comprising representamen, object, and interpretant—to analyze three selected campaign visuals targeting Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Carrefour. The findings reveal that Arabic texts function not merely as linguistic signs but also as cultural codes that evoke moral and emotional responses. Meanwhile, modified brand logos act as visual arguments, transforming familiar corporate symbols into representations of violence and injustice. The study concludes that such multimodal constructions serve as rhetorical tools to align everyday consumption with ideological resistance. This research contributes to the understanding of how digital platforms, particularly in Arabic-language activist spaces, function as discursive arenas for contesting hegemony and constructing counter-narratives. The findings also offer insights into the role of semiotics in digital communication and the potential of social media as a catalyst for collective consciousness.

Abstract

Learning evaluation is an essential component of the educational process, particularly in the context of Islamic Religious Education (IRE), which aims to nurture individuals who are religious and possess noble character. To date, the practice of evaluating IRE in many schools has largely focused on cognitive aspects, while the dimension of spirituality—the core of Islamic education—has often been overlooked. This study aims to examine the urgency and implementation of the spirituality dimension in the evaluation of IRE learning at primary schools in Bengkalis Regency. Employing a quantitative-descriptive approach, the study involved a population of IRE teachers from 30 public and private primary schools. A purposive sample of 60 teachers was selected. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire based on a spirituality scale developed from the following indicators: awareness of God’s presence, sincerity, moral responsibility, and students’ inner transformation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentages and means). The findings reveal that 82% of teachers acknowledge the importance of spiritual evaluation; however, only 41% consistently integrate it into their daily assessment practices. Most teachers (67%) admitted difficulties in measuring spiritual aspects objectively and systematically. Evaluation remains dominated by written tests and behavioral observations, with no explicit spiritual rubric. This study recommends the development of contextual spiritual evaluation instruments, teacher training in authentic spirituality-based assessment, and policy support from educational stakeholders to position the spirituality dimension as a central pillar of IRE evaluation. The study affirms that the success of IRE cannot be adequately measured by exam scores alone, but rather by the extent to which students experience genuine spiritual appreciation and transformation.

Abstract

Moral degradation refers to a decline in a person's adherence to the social norms and ethical standards of society. This decline can be influenced by various factors, such as a child's environment and exposure to social media, which can lead to changes in behavior. As a result, this can disrupt the social order and contribute to feelings of social insecurity. In response to this issue, a research study was conducted to develop a "halal ecosystem" aimed at addressing moral degradation. The research employed qualitative exploratory methods, including in-depth interviews with teachers, students, child psychologists, and representatives of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) in Yogyakarta. The data collected was then analyzed through several stages, including data reduction, content analysis, validation, and drawing conclusions. The outcome of the research is the development of a system called Vedha Paho or Moral Science based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. This system comprises various elements designed to establish a halal ecosystem and create an optimal moral environment for child development.

Abstract

The rise of hate speech, extremism, radicalism, and the deterioration of interfaith relations has become a prevalent issue within communities, especially in online media. Given the potential for this to cause division, it is crucial to approach the issue with moderation. This research focuses on exploring how the Nahdlatul Ulama Organization presents religious moderation on the NU Online website to promote values of goodness and demonstrate tolerance. The study used qualitative research methods and a virtual ethnography approach to analyze virtual texts and online media records. Data collection centered on selecting content related to religious moderation on NU Online media, and the analysis involved data reduction, display, and drawing conclusions. The research revealed that NU Online's moderate da'wah entails: Narrative of religious moderation as an option to gain Islamic insights, creating a virtual space to promote a calming religious spirit and present Islam as a universal religion ‘raḥmatan lil ālamīn’, and kindly promoting moderate Islam amidst the rapid influx of information in the media disruption era.

Abstract

In the modern context, it is important for Muslims to have a concept of monotheism that does not just remain academic but also helps in strengthening one's faith. Nursi introduces two dimensions of monotheism: birth monotheism and true monotheism, both of which aim to nurture faith in everyday life. Understanding both the exoteric and esoteric interpretations of monotheistic verses is crucial. This research delves into Nursi's esoteric approach to Tauḥīd ‘monotheistic’ verses and their impact on Islamic thought. The qualitative research design involves a literature review, gathering data from journals, proceedings, books, and documentaries. The data is analyzed using content analysis techniques, as well as esoteric and historical approaches. The research findings reveal that Nursi's esoteric interpretation of monotheistic verses is in line with other Sufi mufassirs, with two significant differences. Firstly, Nursi's esoteric approach, particularly in tafakkur, offers tangible examples that can be experienced physically. Secondly, as a member of the Naqshbandi Tariqa, Nursi consistently refers to asmā' al-ḥusnā and associates it with manifestations reflected in all entities when interpreting the Qur'an. Nursi's interpretation of monotheistic verses has a strong influence at the international level and a socio-religious impact at the national level. However, his interpretation remains significant in addressing religious matters in Indonesia.

Abstract

Religious discussions among previous socio-religious scholars used to focus more on authority, righteousness, commodification efforts, and the pursuit of financial gains by religious figures. However, this seems less relevant in today's digital age, where people can access and share religious knowledge from various sources. This article aims to explore this phenomenon by examining the approach of a da'wah influencer, Ayu Momalula. She presents counseling da'wah content as a form of self-expression, creating an ideal Muslim woman figure for her social media followers. Using an exploratory qualitative method and online ethnographic approach, primary data was obtained from interviews via WhatsApp and Zoom, as well as from observation of content on her Instagram accounts and books. The study argues that Ayu Momalula's counseling da'wah activities aim to establish herself as an ideal Muslim woman, supporting her authority as a religious micro-celebrity. The article analyzes her subjectivity as a Muslim women micro-celebrity, highlighting her representation of a pious wife and modern mompreneur through content visualization on social media. This study suggests that Ayu Momalula actively promotes productivity in both work and preaching to her specific target audience.

Abstract

The research aimed to examine how religious awareness affects the level of religiosity, with virtual Islamic da’wah content as an intervening variable. Data was collected from respondents using a survey method, and path analysis was used to test the relationship between these variables. The results indicate that religious awareness does not have a direct significant influence on the level of religiosity, with a path coefficient of 0.363. However, religious awareness does significantly influence the content of virtual Islamic da’wah, with a path coefficient of 0.012. Interestingly, the content of virtual Islamic da’wah itself does not significantly affect the level of religiosity, with a path coefficient of 0.880. The analysis of the coefficient of determination (R Square) revealed that the religious awareness model could only explain 1.5% of the variation in the level of religiosity, while the model for virtual Islamic da’wah content could only explain 1.2% of the variation in the da’wah content itself. Additionally, the results of the Sobell test show that virtual Islamic da’wah content is not an intervening variable that significantly mediates the influence of religious awareness on the level of religiosity. The conclusion drawn from this research is that there are likely other factors outside the model that have a greater influence on a person’s level of religiosity. These findings suggest the need for further studies to explore other factors that can influence an individual’s level of religiosity, as well as the role of virtual Islamic da’wah content in different contexts.

Abstract

The Qur'anic literacy in pesantren plays a crucial role in eliminating Qur'anic illiteracy and fostering a generation of literate individuals. This article aimed to explore the tradition of Qur'anic literacy and its significance in both traditional and modern pesantren in Tuban. The research methodology was qualitative, employing a field study with a phenomenological approach to comprehend the tradition of Qur'anic literacy and its interpretation. Data was gathered through interviews, observations, and documentation, and was analyzed using an interactive analysis model consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The analysis is based on Karl Mannheim's theory of the sociology of knowledge, which posits that actions and interpretations of meaning influence human behavior. Mannheim identifies three types of meaning in social action: objective, expressive, and documentary. The study concludes that the tradition of reading and writing the Qur'an in traditional and modern pesantren involves complex interpretations. The objective meaning is derived from social and religious norms in Islamic boarding schools, making this tradition an integral part of religious education and identity. The expressive meaning for kiai and santri represents obedience, devotion, and spiritual relationships influenced by personal backgrounds and relationships with teachers. The documentary meaning reflects the cultural aspects of pesantren, influences the actions and values of the community, and mirrors the ideology of traditionalism, adaptability, and respect for religious authority. Despite differences in educational approaches, these traditional and modern pesantren share similarities in scientific lineage ‘sanad’, which makes the roots of tradition and interpretation similar. This study underscores the importance of understanding the dynamics of tradition in pesantren.

Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive understanding of women's reproductive issues from the perspectives of reproductive health, law, and theology. It highlights how reproductive health is crucial for improving women's quality of life and gender equality while also addressing the challenges in policy implementation. The research uses a qualitative approach, analyzing books, journal articles, and official documents to reveal the positive and negative impacts of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI) on women's reproductive health. It acknowledges women's reproductive rights in international instruments, yet emphasizes the barriers to their implementation due to social stigma and resource limitations. The study also emphasizes the influence of religious views on public policy and access to reproductive health services. The findings are important for policymakers to create more inclusive and responsive policies for women's reproductive health needs. Additionally, the study highlights the necessity of interfaith dialogue and collaboration between the health, legal, and religious sectors to combat stigma and discrimination surrounding women's reproductive issues. The multidisciplinary approach proposed in this research can serve as a foundation for developing more effective and holistic policies, leading to improved access to and the quality of reproductive health services for women, addressing both their health and rights comprehensively.
