Abstract

Thematic Literacy Student Community Service Program (KKM) of Group 35, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, was implemented from July 8 to August 7, 2025, at the Sumber Ilmu Library, Mekarsari Village, Rajeg Subdistrict, Tangerang Regency. This activity aimed to revitalize the function of the village library as a literacy center and to improve the reading skills of elementary school students. The implementation method employed a participatory approach through coordination with schools, library managers, the village government, and the community. The main programs included Read Aloud, Read Me a Book, Smart Book Review, Book-Based Project and Story Creation, and Village-Level Literacy Appreciation. Supporting programs comprised reading tutorials, creative competitions, healthy exercise sessions, and communal work (gotong royong). The results indicated increased participation of students from SDN Sukasari 2, enhanced creativity, and strengthened communication skills through storytelling competitions. Program sustainability was achieved through the commitment of village youth volunteers to continue weekly reading tutorials and the routine scheduling of healthy exercise sessions by the karang taruna (youth organization). In conclusion, the revitalization of the village library through the Thematic Literacy KKM has proven effective in fostering reading interest, creativity, and social interaction among children, while simultaneously reinforcing the library’s role as an active community learning center.Keywords: Literacy; Village Library; Community Service; KKM; UNTIRTA

Abstract

Mastery of the concept of surface area in solid figures remains a challenge for junior high school students, particularly in linking three-dimensional representations with their corresponding nets. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of transparent solid figures as concrete learning media in improving students’ understanding of surface area concepts. Conducted at SMPIT Al Mubarok, Serang City, during the 2025/2026 academic year, the study employed a quantitative method using a one-group pretest–posttest experimental design. Thirty ninth-grade students were selected through accidental sampling based on accessibility and availability. A concept comprehension test was administered before and after the treatment, and data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Results indicated that students’ surface-area comprehension improved significantly following the use of transparent concrete instructional media. The mean pretest score of 81.43 increased to 100 on the posttest. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test revealed a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), and the N-Gain score of 1.00 was categorized as high, confirming that transparent solid media were highly effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding of surface area.

Abstract

This study aims to develop transparent concrete learning media for spatial geometry and evaluate its feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness in supporting students’ understanding of surface area concepts. This development applies the 4D model (Definition, Design, Development, and Dissemination) and involves one media expert, one subject matter expert, and 30 ninth-grade students during the limited dissemination phase. The uniqueness of this study lies in the use of a transparent acrylic model that allows students to clearly observe the relationships among planes, edges, and angles, providing a concrete, visually accessible representation of geometric structures. The research procedure included a student needs analysis, prototype design and production, product validation through expert review, and limited classroom deployment supported by pre- and post-test assessments. Media experts rated the product at 80% (acceptable), while subject matter experts rated it at 87.5% (highly acceptable). Students’ conceptual understanding improved significantly, with the average pre-test score of 81.43 increasing to 100 on the post-test, resulting in an N-Gain of 1.00 (very high). The student response rate reached 66.9% (very practical). These findings indicate that transparent concrete geometric media are feasible, practical, and effective, offering pedagogical advantages for enhancing students’ conceptual understanding through realistic, transparent geometric representations.

Abstract

Students' initial ability to understand Operational Research courses is important as a foundation for exploring more complex optimisation concepts. This study aims to describe the initial skills of Mathematics Education students and reveal their perceptions of Operations Research courses. The research method used is quantitative descriptive, with subjects being third-semester Mathematics Education Study Programme students. Data were collected through diagnostic tests in the form of essay questions to measure cognitive aspects and perception questionnaires to explore affective elements. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by calculating the average score, ability categories, and students' attitude tendencies. The results showed that students' initial abilities in Operations Research were still limited, particularly in mathematical model formulation and understanding of duality concepts. Students were relatively more capable of visualization and procedural skills but did not yet demonstrate adequate mastery of modelling that required conceptual abstraction. From an affective perspective, students have a positive perception of the usefulness of Operations Research, a high level of interest in learning it, and confidence in their abilities. However, there are also concerns about the material's difficulty level, especially on complex topics. These findings confirm that the success of Operations Research learning is influenced by a combination of students' cognitive and affective aspects. Therefore, learning strategies that emphasize strengthening modelling skills, applying problem-based learning, and integrating supporting technology to reduce the burden of manual computation are needed. With this approach, students are expected to be better prepared to handle material requiring high-level thinking skills.

Abstract

Mathematics learning requires instructional approaches that enable students to understand abstract concepts through meaningful experiences. Ethnomathematics offers opportunities to connect mathematical ideas with cultural contexts; however, previous studies have largely focused on identifying mathematical concepts in cultural objects, while empirical evidence on the effectiveness of culture-based instructional materials remains limited. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Banten culture-based ethnomathematics video instructional materials in learning the Pythagorean Theorem. This study employed a posttest-only quasi-experimental design involving 60 eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Banten, Indonesia. The participants were divided into an experimental group ( ) and a control group ( ), with initial equivalence examined using Mid-Semester Test scores. Data were collected through a validated essay test and analysed using descriptive statistics, assumption tests, and an independent samples t-test. The experimental group achieved a higher mean posttest score (66.98) than the control group (46.11). The difference was statistically significant, , , with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.95). The findings indicate that the developed instructional materials significantly improved students’ learning outcomes compared with conventional textbook-based instruction. However, the study was limited to one school and a relatively small sample. Future studies should involve broader contexts and additional learning variables.
