Abstract

The coastal waste problem in Pariaman City, driven by rising plastic volumes, limited infrastructure, and disposal behaviors, threatens ecosystems and the tourism sector and requires coordinated intervention. This community service aims to implement an integrated cleanup with waste sorting and initial processing, while strengthening community capacity and environmental awareness. The “Coastal Clean-Up Campaign” applied a community-based participatory approach through coordinated clean-ups, source-level sorting, and initial composting. A total of 150 participants, including lecturers, students, village officials, and tourism stakeholders, were involved across 200-meter zones, supported by student-led scientific monitoring, before–after documentation, and the handover of bins and sorted waste to village authorities. The results indicate that the program was implemented effectively, with active stakeholder participation, visible environmental improvements, and the collection of 250 kg of sorted plastic and paper, some of which demonstrated economic value. This study presents a practical and replicable participatory model that integrates mass clean-up activities with source control, local governance support, and tourism stakeholder engagement. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening technical capacity, institutional support, periodic monitoring, and circular economy pathways to ensure sustainability. The program also increased environmental awareness and fostered local waste management groups, with outcomes that can support policy development and replication in other coastal tourism areas.

Abstract

Maritime English is a critical competence in vocational maritime education because it supports safe communication, operational performance, and global employability. However, empirical evidence regarding the combined influence of self-directed learning, simulation-based training, and educational culture on Maritime English proficiency remains limited. This study investigated the effects of self-directed learning and simulation-based training on Maritime English proficiency, as well as the moderating role of educational culture among students at Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang. Using an explanatory quantitative design, data were collected from 444 students through a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that self-directed learning and simulation-based training significantly improve Maritime English proficiency, with simulation-based training emerging as the strongest predictor. Educational culture also demonstrates a significant direct contribution to Maritime English proficiency. However, educational culture does not significantly moderate the relationships between self-directed learning, simulation-based training, and Maritime English proficiency. These findings highlight the importance of contextual simulation practices and autonomous learning development in strengthening Maritime English competence within vocational maritime education. The study contributes to vocational language education literature by integrating learner autonomy, simulation-based learning, and institutional culture within a single predictive model.

Abstract

The problem motivating this study is the limited empirical evidence concerning the mechanisms through which the Maritime Education System shapes students’ professional mindset via the Learning Environment and Self-Directed Learning. This study aims to examine the effect of the Maritime Education System on the formation of students’ professional mindset, with particular attention to the mediating roles of the Learning Environment and Self-Directed Learning. A quantitative approach was employed using Structural Equation Modeling based on Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with bootstrap procedures to assess path significance. Results show that the Maritime Education System has a direct, positive, and statistically significant effect on students’ professional mindset (O = 0.793; p < 0.001) and significantly influences the Learning Environment (O = 0.762; p < 0.001) and Self-Directed Learning (O = 0.717; p < 0.001); both the Learning Environment (O = 0.507; p < 0.001) and Self-Directed Learning (O = 0.268; p < 0.001) contribute positively to students’ professional mindset. Specific indirect effects X–M1–Y (O = 0.387; p < 0.001) and X–M2–Y (O = 0.192; p < 0.001) were also significant, indicating partial mediation with a larger mediating contribution through the learning environment. Accordingly, future research is recommended to adopt longitudinal designs and test moderators such as internship experience and other contextual variables to strengthen empirical evidence and inform maritime education policy.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of self-regulated learning, instructor support, and campus climate on maritime competence among maritime cadets, with psychological well-being as a moderating variable. The study employed a quantitative explanatory research design. The population consisted of 670 students from Cohorts VII, VIII, IX, and X at Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat, Indonesia. A pilot test was conducted with 100 cadets, while the main study involved 570 respondents. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) using SmartPLS 3. The findings revealed that instructor support had a positive and significant effect on maritime competence. In contrast, self-regulated learning, campus climate, and psychological well-being did not have significant direct effects on maritime competence. Furthermore, psychological well-being did not moderate the relationships between self-regulated learning, instructor support, campus climate, and maritime competence. These findings indicate that instructor support is the most influential factor in enhancing cadets' maritime competence within maritime vocational higher education. This study contributes theoretically by extending the understanding of maritime competence through the integration of individual, instructional, environmental, and psychological factors into a single structural model. Practically, the findings provide valuable insights for maritime higher education institutions to strengthen instructor competence and instructional quality in order to improve maritime competence among cadets.
