Abstract

Abstract

This study focuses on Seram Bagian Timur, an area known for its complex geological setting and active tectonic. Recent seismic events, including the 26 September 2019 Ambon earthquake (Mw 6.5) and the 22 June 2025 earthquake near Bula (Mw 5.0), indicate the presence of active fault systems and heterogeneous subsurface conditions. These conditions govern how seismic waves are modified at the ground surface particularly variation in subsurface material properties. This effect is represented by the amplification factor, which estimated using the empirical relationship proposed by Fujimoto and Midorikawa. The objective of this study is to examine the spatial variability of site response using Vs30 data from USGS, along with amplification factors and dominant periods. The analysis is based on 6,550 grid points with a spatial resolution of approximately 930 m, supported by regional geological information. Data processing involved extraction, interpolation, and mapping, while amplification and dominant period were estimated using empirical approach The results indicate that Vs30 values range from 180 to 900 m/s (site classes BC–E), with lower values concentrated in coastal and eastern areas, and higher values predominantly found in the western part of the study area. Amplification factors vary between 0.77 and 2.79, generally falling within low to moderate categories. Meanwhile, dominant periods range from 0.133 to 0.667 seconds, representing soil types from hard to very soft conditions. Overall, the three parameters show a consistent pattern, where lower Vs30 values tend to correspond to higher amplification and longer dominant periods, reflecting less consolidated subsurface materials.

Abstract

This study aims to identify permeable zones influencing geothermal manifestations in Mount Papandayan, West Java, which holds geothermal potential. The area's geology conditions indicate that geothermal manifestations are closely related to geological structures, interpreted from ridge and valley alignments in DEM SRTM imagery. These structures form weak zones serving as pathways for geothermal fluids to reach the surface. The analysis involves interpreting lineaments from DEM SRTM data to calculate lineament density, visualized using roset diagrams and 3D models in Micromine. Results show dominant lineament orientations trending Northeast–Southwest, Northwest–Southeast, and West–East. Field validation confirms geothermal features such as fumaroles, hot springs, and altered rocks in faulted zones, marked by fault scarps and sharp river bends. Lineament density in the study area varies, categorized as low (6.1–11.6 km⁻¹), medium (11.7–16.9 km⁻¹), and high (17.0–24.0 km⁻¹). Geothermal manifestations tend to appear in high-density zones associated with fractures or faults, which function as recharge and discharge channels for geothermal fluids. The 3D model supports the link between fault presence and geothermal surface manifestations in the area.

Abstract

The effect of additive corn cob ash (CA) on Portland Composite Cement (PCC) on the compressive strength of the mortar is influenced by pozzolan. The material that makes up pozzolan is silica. Corn cobs are agricultural waste that contains silica and every year continue to increase, so corn cob waste is as an additional material to Portland Composite Cement (PCC). This study was conducted to determine the compressive strength value of mortar using additive corn cob ash (CA) and corn cob ash that has been washed with HCl 2N (CA*) and the feasibility of these additives as a PCC-type cement mixture. The weight percentages of additives used were 5%, 10%, and 15%, and the duration of the mortar compressive strength test was 3, 7, and 28 days. The experimental results showed that the compressive strength (σm) was highest at the addition of 5% additives, the effect of additives on compressive strength resulted in σm research > standard σm (SNI). The results of the activation index analysis obtained additive corn cob ash of 76% and corn cob ash+HCl 2N of 76.71%, the value is above the minimum limit according to ASTM C.618-99 which is 75%.

Abstract

Kalanchoe pinnata leaves are rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic constituents, which exhibit notable antioxidant properties. However, the efficiency of extraction processes is highly influenced by operational variables such as the type of physical pre-treatment and maceration duration. This study aims to evaluate the effect of three physical pre-treatment methods (manual grinding, chopping, and blending) and maceration periods ranging from 3 to 5 days on the antioxidant activity of K. pinnata leaf extracts using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. Results indicate that the grinding method combined with five days of maceration yields the highest antioxidant activity (95.04%), while blending leads to the lowest activity (81.78%), presumably due to heat-induced degradation of active compounds. Kinetic observations show that antioxidant activity tends to plateau on day five, particularly in ground samples. These findings highlight the critical influence of particle size reduction and solvent–solid contact time on mass transfer efficiency during extraction. This preliminary investigation provides a scientific basis for further research on the optimization of natural antioxidant extraction processes and the development of functional herbal formulations derived from K. pinnata leaves.

Abstract

Administratively, the research area is located within the Lebaksiuh Region and its surroundings, Jatigede District, Sumedang Regency, West Java Province. The method used in this study is geological mapping. The research area is divided into five geomorphological units: the Steep Intrusive Geomorphology Unit, the steep structural hill unit, Gently to moderately steep structural hills, the moderately structural hill unit, and denudational unit. Based on the stratigraphy units, the research area is subdivided into three rock units: the carbonate sandstone unit (Tobpk), the tuffaceous sandstone unit (Tpbp), and the intrusive unit (a). The geological structures developed in the study area include folds, joints, and faults. The geological history of the area shows that during the late oligocene–early miocene, the carbonate sandstone unit (Tobpk) was deposited in a bathyal depositional environment. Subsequently, unconformably, the sandstone unit (Tpbp) was deposited during the pliocene in a fluvial environment. The depositional process was later interrupted by tectonic activity during the pleistocene, characterized by compressional tectonics that formed a series of geology structure trending northwest–southeast. Tectonic activity also led to the formation of joints and faults in the study area, as well as volcanic activity that produced intrusions along zones of weakness. The geological resources and hazards identified in the research area include potential mineral resources and geotourism potential, particularly at the Cisempong Waterfall.
