Abstract

This study explores how language attitudes relate to language choice among 34 Mandarin Education students at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) batch 2025. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics, simple linear regression, and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that students generally perceive Mandarin positively and recognize its value in academic and professional contexts. However, the regression analysis indicates that the influence of language attitudes on language choice was positive but statistically insignificant (R² = 0.094; p = 0.078). The qualitative findings indicate that Mandarin use is shaped by students’ confidence, opportunities for practice, learning environment, and language difficulties, particularly in vocabulary, tones, and pronunciation. This study highlights that Mandarin learning should move beyond building positive perceptions by providing supportive communication environments and practical speaking activities to encourage active language use.

Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing Chinese dialect variation from a sociolinguistic perspective. Despite the establishment of Putonghua as the national standard language, various dialects such as Yue, Min, Wu, and Hakka continue to be used in daily communication, reflecting linguistic and cultural diversity within Chinese society. This research aims to identify and synthesize the main factors affecting dialect variation through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Relevant articles published between 2020 and 2025 were collected and analyzed from reputable academic sources. The findings reveal that Chinese dialect variation is shaped by four major factors: social factors, including urbanization, mobility, and language contact; geographical factors, such as regional isolation and topographical conditions; historical-political factors, including migration patterns and language policies; and language identity factors related to cultural attachment and community belonging. The study also indicates that the dominance of Mandarin has contributed to language shift among younger generations.

Abstract

Abstract. This study is motivated by the increasingly dynamic use of language in the digital era, particularly among Generation Z, who actively engage with digital media. In the context of globalization, Mandarin, as one of the major international languages, plays an important role not only in academic settings but also in providing career opportunities and cross-cultural communication. However, in practice, the use of Mandarin among university students is not always aligned with their language attitudes. This study aims to analyze the language attitudes of Mandarin Language Education students of the 2024 cohort at Universitas Negeri Surabaya toward Mandarin in the digital era and to identify the influence of digital media on its use. This research employs a descriptive quantitative approach supported by qualitative data. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using Google Forms, consisting of closed-ended questions with a Likert scale and open-ended questions. The sample consisted of approximately 70 respondents from classes B and C. The results show that 95.8% of respondents use Mandarin in academic contexts, while its use in daily communication remains limited, with the majority of respondents (54.2%) using it only occasionally. Furthermore, digital media has a significant influence, with around 70% of respondents stating that it affects their interest in using Mandarin. These findings indicate a gap between positive language attitudes and actual language use in everyday life. This study contributes to understanding the dynamics of students’ language attitudes in the digital era and provides insights for developing more communicative and contextual Mandarin language learning strategies. Keywords: language attitude, Mandarin, Generation Z, digital media, sociolinguistics
