Abstract

Objectives: To examine the relationship between abdominal muscle strength and waist flexibility with long jump performance among male collegiate athletes, and to determine the relative contribution of these factors to jump distance. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 male physical education students aged 18-22 years from Sekolah Tinggi Olahraga dan Kesehatan Bina Guna Medan, Indonesia. Participants underwent assessments of abdominal muscle strength (one-minute sit-up test), waist flexibility (sit-and-reach test), and long jump performance. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the relationships between variables. Results: Abdominal muscle strength showed a moderate positive correlation with long jump distance (r = 0.68, p < 0.001), while waist flexibility demonstrated a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.54, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that abdominal strength (β = 0.52) was a stronger predictor of long jump performance than waist flexibility (β = 0.31). Together, these factors explained 57.3% of the variance in jump distance. Conclusion: Core stability and trunk flexibility are important determinants of long jump performance beyond traditional factors like lower limb power. The study recommends incorporating comprehensive core strengthening and flexibility training into long jump preparation, with a particular emphasis on abdominal muscle development.

Abstract

Conclusion: Program ini memberikan dampak positif berupa peningkatan aktivitas fisik siswa, pengenalan kembali permainan tradisional kepada generasi muda, terciptanya kolaborasi sekolah-orang tua, dan tersedianya model kegiatan ekstrakurikuler yang berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Objectives: This community service aimed to implement an integrated sports approach within social service activities in Mabar Hilir Sub-district, Medan City. Methods: The program addressed the interrelated issues of low physical activity, limited social interaction, and minimal health awareness among residents. Using a participatory approach, this initiative combined sports activities with health education and community development. Results: The six-month program involved 235 participants across different age groups and demonstrated significant improvements in health awareness (37% increase), regular physical activity participation (42% increase), and community cohesion (65% of participants reported stronger social bonds). Implementation challenges included initial participation hesitancy, infrastructure limitations, and scheduling conflicts, which were addressed through adaptive strategies. Conclusion: The successful integration of sports into social services provides a replicable model for holistic community development in similar urban settings.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Motor skill development during early childhood is fundamental for physical, cognitive, and social development. Structured play activities have been proposed as effective interventions for enhancing motor skill acquisition in young children. This study investigated the influence of structured play activities on motor skill acquisition among kindergarten students in Medan Deli, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Materials and methods: A total of 120 kindergarten students (aged 4-6 years) participated in this quasi-experimental study. Participants were divided into experimental (n=60) and control groups (n=60). The experimental group engaged in structured play activities for 12 weeks (3 sessions/week, 45 minutes/session), while the control group followed regular curriculum activities. Motor skills were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 (TGMD-3) at pre-test and post-test intervals. Results: Statistical analysis using SPSS 28 revealed significant improvements in the experimental group compared to the control group. The experimental group showed substantial gains in locomotor skills (p<0.001, d=1.24) and object control skills (p<0.001, d=1.18). Conclusions: Structured play activities significantly enhance motor skill acquisition in early childhood. Implementation of systematic, play-based motor interventions in kindergarten settings is recommended to optimize developmental outcomes.
