Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the capacity of Elementary School (SD) teachers in compiling teaching materials containing local wisdom as an effort to contextualize learning. The background of this activity is the low integration of local values in the learning process which causes a lack of relevance of teaching materials to the environment of students. This training was carried out at GMIT Kuanino 1 Elementary School, Kupang City, which has a wealth of local culture such as the tradition of ikat weaving, folklore, and the values of the lives of the people of East Nusa Tenggara. The method of implementing the activity consists of the stages of socialization, training, mentoring, and evaluation. The training materials include identification of local potential, techniques for integrating local wisdom into lesson plans and teaching modules, and the practice of compiling teaching materials based on the Merdeka Curriculum. The results of the activity showed an increase in teachers' understanding of the importance of local wisdom in learning and their ability to compile contextual teaching materials. Thus, this training makes a positive contribution to strengthening local cultural identity in education and increasing student involvement in the learning process. This activity also encourages teachers to become agents of cultural preservation through educational activities that are relevant to students' daily lives.

Abstract

The quality of learning is greatly influenced by teachers' creativity in presenting teaching materials, especially in engaging and visual learning contexts. In the digital era, utilizing technologies like Canva is a solution to increase the effectiveness of material delivery. However, many teachers in 3T (frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged) areas, including Katara Elementary School in Malaka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, have not yet optimally utilized this application due to limited knowledge and training. This community service program aims to provide training in creating Canva-based learning media to teachers at Katara Elementary School. The method used was participatory training through face-to-face workshops, live demonstrations, independent practice, and mentoring. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in teachers' understanding and skills in creating engaging visual learning media, such as infographics, educational posters, and interactive presentations. Most participants stated that this training was very helpful in supporting the learning process in the classroom. Thus, this training has had a positive impact on improving the quality of education in elementary schools, especially in remote areas. This activity also opens up opportunities for further collaboration and digital literacy development for teachers.

Abstract

Indonesian language learning in elementary schools aims not only to improve reading and writing skills but also to foster critical thinking and in-depth literacy skills. Critical literacy enables students to systematically analyze, evaluate, and express opinions based on the texts they read. This study aims to assist teachers at SDI Sikumana 3 in developing critical literacy-based Indonesian language learning to improve the quality of teaching and students' literacy skills. The method used was Community Service (PkM) with a participatory approach. Activities were carried out through workshops, direct classroom mentoring, and evaluation of learning planning and implementation. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results of the activities showed an increase in teachers' understanding of the concept of critical literacy, their ability to design literacy-based learning activities, and the application of critical reading and reflective writing strategies in the classroom. Teachers were able to facilitate students' questions, analyze information, and express opinions in writing and orally. This activity also encouraged the creation of a literacy culture in schools, including the use of storybooks, digital media, and group discussions. Based on these findings, critical literacy-based teacher mentoring effectively improves the quality of Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level. Recommendations from this activity include the need for sustainable programs, school management support, and the integration of critical literacy into the elementary school curriculum to ensure more contextual, critical, and creative learning.
