Abstract

Digital communication has reshaped how evaluations are expressed in public platforms, particularly on YouTube, where food reviews combine entertainment and judgment. However, limited attention has been given to how reviewers balance criticism and politeness in such contexts. This study aims to examine politeness strategies and mitigation devices used in food review videos by Nick DiGiovanni. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study applies Brown Levinson’s politeness theory and Fraser’s mitigation framework to analyze evaluative utterances from selected videos published between 2024 and 2025. The findings reveal that negative politeness strategies are dominant and frequently combined with mitigation devices such as hedges, disclaimers, and parenthetical verbs. These features function to soften criticism, maintain audience engagement, and preserve the speaker’s credibility. Overall, the study shows that politeness and mitigation play a crucial role in shaping evaluative discourse in digital media.

Abstract

This study examines adjective-forming suffixation in Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis by integrating derivational morphological analysis with stylistic interpretation. The study aims to identify the types and frequencies of adjective-forming suffixes and to explore their contribution to the novel’s thematic and stylistic construction. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach supported by quantitative frequency analysis, the data were collected from the English translation of The Metamorphosis and analyzed using theories of derivational morphology proposed by Katamba (2018), Plag (2018), and related scholars. The analysis identified 73 valid instances of adjective-forming suffixation distributed across eighteen suffix types. The most productive suffixes were -ful (13 instances), -al (8 instances), -y (7 instances), and -less (6 instances). The findings indicate that most derived adjectives function as qualitative adjectives, describing emotional states, psychological conditions, and physical characteristics, while relational adjectives primarily establish social and contextual relationships. The distribution of suffixes reveals a significant increase in adjective use in the final chapter, corresponding to the intensification of Gregor Samsa’s psychological decline and social isolation. Furthermore, suffixes such as -ful and -less contribute to the representation of suffering, vulnerability, powerlessness, and alienation, which constitute central themes of the novel. The study concludes that adjective-forming suffixation functions not only as a productive morphological process but also as a stylistic resource that supports characterization, thematic development, and meaning construction in literary discourse.

Abstract

Speech errors in spontaneous communication provide valuable insights into the cognitive processes underlying language production. However, studies examining speech errors in informal digital interviews remain limited. This study aims to identify the types of speech errors produced by Ed Sheeran and examine the factors influencing their occurrence in his interview on the Call Her Daddy YouTube channel. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. The data consisted of utterances transcribed from the interview and were analyzed using Clark and Clark's (1977) speech error taxonomy. The findings identified 134 speech errors, with repeats and filled pauses as the most frequently occurring types. These errors were influenced by cognitive factors, including hesitation and utterance-planning difficulties, as well as situational factors such as spontaneity and the informal nature of the interview. The findings suggest that speech errors are a natural characteristic of spontaneous speech and demonstrate how cognitive processing and communicative context interact during language production. This study contributes to psycholinguistic research by providing empirical evidence from authentic digital media discourse.

Abstract

Presupposition is an important pragmatic strategy in advertising because it enables advertisers to communicate persuasive meanings implicitly. Although previous studies have examined presupposition in advertising discourse, limited attention has been given to its persuasive functions in Instagram-based skincare advertising, particularly in The Ordinary’s advertisements. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the types of presupposition and their persuasive functions in The Ordinary’s Instagram advertisement captions. A qualitative descriptive method was employed using captions posted on The Ordinary’s official Instagram account between November 2025 until January 2026. Data were collected through observation and documentation techniques and analyzed using Yule’s (1996) theory of presupposition. The findings revealed 31 instances of presupposition, consisting of lexical, existential, factive, and structural types, with lexical presupposition occurring most frequently. Presuppositions functioned to normalize skincare practices, strengthen product relevance, enhance brand credibility, and encourage audience engagement. These findings demonstrate the importance of presupposition as a persuasive strategy in digital advertising discourse.

Abstract

Death is a sensitive topic commonly expressed through indirect language such as euphemism, metaphor, and irony, yet how conversational implicature systematically conveys death-related meanings within a single character's discourse in interactive digital narrative remains theoretically unaddressed. This study examines how death-related conversational implicatures are realized in Hu Tao's dialogue in the Papilio Charontis story quest of Genshin Impact, which Gricean maxims are flouted to generate them, and how these implicatures convey indirect references to death. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Grice's (1975) Cooperative Principle, data were collected through document analysis of the quest transcript and analyzed by identifying indirect expressions, determining maxim violations, and interpreting death-related meanings through pragmatic inference. The analysis of 33 utterances reveals that metaphorical expression, euphemism, and irony are the dominant strategies, with the maxim of manner most frequently flouted, and 32 of 33 implicatures classified as particularized. The findings confirm that Grice's framework is applicable to interactive digital narratives and that conversational implicature functions as a core mechanism of character identity construction in video game discourse.

Abstract

This study examines language disorder in a five-year-old child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), named Mikko, as observed in natural communication settings on The Gentle Life YouTube channel. Language is an essential part of everyday communication; however, children with ASD often experience difficulties in both understanding and producing language. While previous studies have widely explored language disorders in autism, most have been conducted in clinical contexts, providing limited insight into how these difficulties appear in real-life interactions. This study aims to identify the types of language disorder and analyse how they are expressed in natural communication using the perspective of Weak Central Coherence Theory. A qualitative case study design is employed, focusing on naturally occurring utterances produced by the participant. The findings reveal that Mikko demonstrates various language disorder features, with pragmatic impairment as the most dominant, followed by echolalia, syntactic irregularities, and limited vocabulary development. These patterns indicate that her communication is strongly influenced by a detail-focused cognitive processing style, which affects her ability to produce contextually appropriate and meaningful language.

Abstract

Deictic expressions constitute a fundamental pragmatic mechanism in political communication, yet their role in constructing diplomatic stances within multilateral forums remains underexplored. This study aims to examine how deictic expressions are employed to construct political stance in the closing remarks delivered by Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, at the Closing of the General Debate on 29 September 2025 in New York. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected through purposive sampling across three discursive domains: global geopolitical crises, the climate change crisis, and women's rights and gender equality. The data were analyzed using Levinson's (1983) five-type deixis framework and mapped onto Du Bois's (2007) Stance Triangle. The findings reveal that person deixis is the most dominant category, functioning as the primary resource for evaluation, positioning, and alignment. Collectively, deictic expressions serve as a unified rhetorical instrument that transforms bureaucratic discourse into a morally binding call for global action.
