Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a strategic plantation crop contributing significantly to global sugar production. Early growth performance is a critical phase determining stand establishment and subsequent productivity, particularly in vegetative propagation systems using stem cuttings (setts). This study aimed to evaluate the early growth performance of the RGM 1010 Cultivar of sugarcane based on different stem sett positions (top, middle, and bottom) using a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. The experiment was conducted from July 2025 to January 2026 at the Experimental Farm of Politeknik Negeri Lampung, Indonesia. Observed parameters up to 10 weeks after planting (WAP) included survival percentage, plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, and number of internodes. Analysis of variance at the 5% significance level showed that sett position significantly affected survival percentage and plant height. The top setts produced the highest survival rate (92.5%) and plant height (153.5 cm), followed by middle and bottom setts. In contrast, number of leaves, leaf length, and number of internodes were not significantly influenced by sett position. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a weak and non-significant negative relationship (r = –0.324) between plant height and leaf number, indicating that stem elongation and leaf formation were relatively independent during early growth. The superior performance of top setts is attributed to higher meristematic activity and hormonal balance, promoting faster shoot and root initiation. Overall, while all sett positions were viable for vegetative propagation, top setts demonstrated better early vigor, providing practical implications for improving seedling establishment efficiency in sugarcane cultivation.

Abstract

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is a strategic plantation commodity contributing significantly to Indonesia’s economy. Pesawaran Regency, one of the cocoa production centers in Lampung Province, faces biophysical challenges related to rainfall variability and heterogeneous land-suitability conditions. This study aimed to analyze rainfall patterns and variability from 2016–2022, evaluate cocoa productivity trends, assess agroclimatic and land suitability characteristics, and examine the relationship between rainfall and cocoa productivity. The research was conducted in November–December 2024 using secondary data on annual rainfall, cocoa productivity (2016–2022), and land suitability parameters. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, land suitability evaluation, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. Results showed that annual rainfall ranged from 1,827–2,250 mm/year, remaining within the optimal range for cocoa cultivation. Productivity increased from 719 kg/ha (2016–2017) to 1,106 kg/ha (2018), stabilized at approximately 1,174 kg/ha (2019–2021), and declined to 876 kg/ha in 2022. Land suitability classes ranged from S1 to S3, with major limiting factors including acidic soil pH, low–moderate phosphorus availability, limited nutrient retention, and erosion risk. Correlation analysis revealed a very weak relationship between rainfall and productivity (r = –0.096; R² = 0.009) with the regression equation Y = 1266.94 – 0.135X. These findings indicate that cocoa productivity dynamics in Pesawaran Regency are more strongly influenced by land conditions and management practices than by annual rainfall variability.

Abstract

A study was conducted in Reroroja Village, Magepanda District, Sikka Regency. The purpose of this study was to determine the planting pattern applied by rice farmers, to determine the cost structure, income and profits received by rice farmers, to determine the efficiency of rice farming in Reroroja Village, Magepanda District, Sikka Regency. The results of the study showed that the planting pattern applied by Ciherang variety rice farmers in Reroroja Village was a monoculture planting pattern for the first planting season and a planting pattern for the second planting season by means of crop rotation where planting two or more types of crops was done in rotation. After planting one harvest, then the next crop was planted on the same land. The average production of Ciherang rice in the first planting season was 2,366 kg and in the second planting season was 1,183 kg with a total of 3,549 kg for both planting seasons. The price of rice produced by farmers was Rp. 8,000 / kg, while in the second planting season the price of rice received by farmers was Rp. 10,000 / kg. In the first planting period, the average income was Rp. 18,924,000, and the second planting period was Rp. 11,830,000, so that the total income of the Ciherang variety of rice farmers during the two planting periods was Rp. 30,749,540. The average production cost was Rp. 3,343,912 for the first planting period and Rp. 3,343,912 for the second planting period, while the average total production cost for the two planting periods was Rp. 6,687,824. The average profit received by farmers for the first planting period was Rp. 15,584,088 and for the second planting period the average profit received was Rp. 8,486,088 with a total profit for the two planting periods of rice in Reroroja Village of Rp. 24,070,176.

Abstract

Cocoa production in Indonesia is hampered by pest attacks, namely the fruit-sucking bug Helopeltis spp. And the cocoa pod borer Conopomorpha cramerella. Both pests reduce the quality and quantity of the harvest. This training aims to accompany cocoa farmers in implementing fruit-bagging techniques as an environmentally friendly pest prevention and management. The activity was carried out in Sidomulyo Village, Semaka District, Tanggamus Regency, using extension methods, field demonstrations, and direct practice with farmers. The results showed a notable increase in farmers' understanding of pest identification and their proficiency in applying the cocoa fruit bagging technique. Monitoring of demonstration plots revealed that bagging effectively reduced pest attack intensity from 48% in control plants to 15% in bagged fruits, while the proportion of healthy, harvestable pods increased from 52% to 85%. This technique is considered effective, low-cost, easy to implement, and free from chemical inputs, making it highly suitable for small-scale cocoa farmers.
