Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Second-year biochar residue represents an understudied aspect of long-term soil amendment management, as its persistence in soil may influence biological communities differently over time. This study aimed to analyze the effects of second-year biochar residue and NPK fertilizer rates on soil mesofauna abundance and soil microbial activity in patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) cultivation. The experiment was arranged in a split-plot design with three replications. The main plot factor was second-year biochar residue rates (0, 10, and 20 ton ha-1), and the subplot factor was NPK fertilizer rates (0, 350, and 700 kg ha-1). Second-year biochar residue had no significant effect on soil mesofauna population, diversity index, dominance index, or microbial activity, while NPK fertilizer at 700 kg ha-1 significantly increased mesofauna population (24.33 individuals dm-³), diversity index (0.28), and dominance index (0.022). A total of 501 mesofauna individuals were identified, dominated by Acarina (67.3%) and Collembola (28.9%). Correlation analysis revealed strong positive relationships between mesofauna variables and soil physical factors, particularly temperature (r = 0.74) and moisture (r = 0.83), while soil chemical properties showed weak correlations. No significant interactions were observed between biochar residue and NPK fertilizer. These findings indicate that biochar’s stimulatory effects on soil biota diminish substantially after the first year. In contrast, NPK fertilization at 700 kg ha-1 effectively enhances soil mesofauna communities, which serve as indicators of soil biological health in patchouli cultivation systems.

Abstract

Ultisols are characterized by strong acidity, low cation exchange capacity, and high phosphate fixation, which limit nutrient availability and crop productivity. Sustainable fertilization strategies are needed to improve soil quality and reduce dependence on inorganic inputs. A pot experiment was conducted from January to August 2025 using a randomized complete block design with nine treatments and three replications (270 plants). Treatments included combinations of 50% NPK fertilizer with liquid organic fertilizers (LOFs) derived from goat urine, rabbit urine, banana peels, and pineapple peels. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by orthogonal comparison tests. The combined application of LOFs with 50% NPK significantly increased biomass, bulb yield, soil CEC, organic C, total N, available K, and plant N and K uptake (p < 0.01) compared to 100% NPK. Yield increased by 27.7%, while N and K uptake rose by 63.0% and 65.0%, respectively. Rabbit urine LOF showed the highest effectiveness, improving yield by up to 36.0% compared to goat urine. Plant-based LOFs enhanced soil organic C, CEC, and K availability, whereas animal-based LOFs were more effective in increasing soil N. The integration of LOFs with reduced NPK improves soil fertility and shallot productivity under controlled conditions. Rabbit urine LOF at 300 mL L⁻¹ is the most effective treatment. However, field validation is required before large-scale application.

Abstract

Abstract. Pujisiswanto H, Mar’ah DL, Sriyani N, Yusnita, Evizal R. 2022. Effectivity of soap nuts extract (Sapindus rarak) as bioherbicide toward the growth of Leptochloa chinensis and Fimbristylis milacea. Biodiversitas 23: 1222-1230. Fimbristylis miliaceae and Leptochloa chinensis weeds were grown predominantly in rice fields which cause a decrease in production yields of up to 36%-43%. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the method of extractions and find the best concentration of Sapindus rarak by Aqueous and methanol extracts against the growth of F. miliacea and L. chinensis, which do not reduce the growth of rice. Two experiments were arranged for this research; the first was bioassay tests of weed growth of F. miliaceae and L. chinensis at the greenhouse, which were applied by aqueous and methanol S. rarak extracts. It was carried out using a randomized block design in factorial (2x5). The second experiment was the rice growth toxicity test which was applied S. rarak extracted by aqueous and methanol, analyzed to single factor randomized design with various concentrations. The results showed that the application of S. rarak extracted by aqueous and methanol was able to inhibit the growth of L. chinensis and F. mileacea weeds at a concentration of 25%, 50% and 75%. The application of S. rarak extracted by aqueous did not affect rice growth, whereas S. rarak extracted by methanol inhibited rice height and stover weight at a concentration of 75%, but did not inhibit root length growth and leaf number.

Abstract

Cocoa production in Indonesia is hampered by pest attacks, namely the fruit-sucking bug Helopeltis spp. And the cocoa pod borer Conopomorpha cramerella. Both pests reduce the quality and quantity of the harvest. This training aims to accompany cocoa farmers in implementing fruit-bagging techniques as an environmentally friendly pest prevention and management. The activity was carried out in Sidomulyo Village, Semaka District, Tanggamus Regency, using extension methods, field demonstrations, and direct practice with farmers. The results showed a notable increase in farmers' understanding of pest identification and their proficiency in applying the cocoa fruit bagging technique. Monitoring of demonstration plots revealed that bagging effectively reduced pest attack intensity from 48% in control plants to 15% in bagged fruits, while the proportion of healthy, harvestable pods increased from 52% to 85%. This technique is considered effective, low-cost, easy to implement, and free from chemical inputs, making it highly suitable for small-scale cocoa farmers. The activity also demonstrated the potential of participatory field-based training in accelerating technology adoption at the grassroots level, thereby supporting the sustainability of cocoa production and the welfare of farming communitie
