Abstract

General Background Character education is a core mandate of Indonesia’s national education system, yet classroom practices often prioritize cognitive achievement over value internalization. Specific Background In Pancasila and Civic Education learning, especially in Lhokseumawe City, teaching remains largely normative and theoretical, with limited integration of students’ socio-cultural realities. Knowledge Gap Although Acehnese local wisdom contains rich ethical teachings, Narit Maja as an oral tradition has not been systematically utilized as contextual teaching material in Civic Education. Aims This study aims to explore the ethical values embedded in Narit Maja and examine their relevance for integration into Pancasila and Civic Education learning. Results Using a descriptive qualitative ethnopedagogical approach, the study identifies values of honesty, deliberation, mutual cooperation, responsibility, and patriotism within Narit Maja that align with the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile. The findings also reveal structural and practical challenges, including limited regulations, insufficient documented materials, and institutional sectoral constraints, while highlighting digitalization as a strategic pathway. Novelty This study positions Narit Maja as a culturally grounded source of Civic Education content that bridges national curriculum objectives with Acehnese socio-cultural contexts. Implications Integrating Narit Maja into Civic Education supports contextual character formation, strengthens students’ cultural identity, and offers a sustainable approach to aligning national character education with local wisdom in Lhokseumawe City. Highlights: Acehnese oral expressions contain structured ethical principles aligned with national character frameworks. Contextual learning rooted in local culture addresses gaps between normative curriculum and student realities. Digital-based materials provide a feasible pathway for preserving oral traditions in formal schooling contexts. Keywords: Narit Maja, Civic Education, Character Education.

Abstract

This article explores the legal status of khitbah (engagement) conducted through social media platforms, particularly Facebook, in light of Shafi”˜i jurisprudence. In classical Islamic law, khitbah represents a preliminary stage of marriage, intended to establish mutual understanding and commitment prior to the solemnization of the marriage contract (”˜aqd al-nikāḥ). Traditionally, this practice has been carried out in face-to-face settings, mediated by families and community norms. However, the rapid development of communication technology has reconfigured modes of social interaction among Muslims, including those related to religiously significant practices such as khitbah. The study employs a qualitative library research approach, drawing upon primary Shafi”˜i fiqh sources such as MughnÄ« al-Muḥtāj (al-Khaá¹Ä«b al-ShirbÄ«nÄ«), I”˜Änat al-ṬālibÄ«n (al-Shaṭā), and al-Fiqh al-IslāmÄ« wa Adillatuh (al-ZuḥaylÄ«), alongside contemporary scholarly debates in Islamic family law and digital communication studies. The findings demonstrate that a khitbah performed through social media is legally valid, since the principle al-kitābah ka-l-khiṭāb that written communication is equivalent to spoken communication is well established in Islamic jurisprudence. Thus, proposals made through text messages, social media posts, or digital calls fulfill the requirement of explicit (á¹£arīḥ) or indirect (ta”˜rīḍ) expression of intent. Nonetheless, while the legality of such practice is affirmed, ethical and social concerns remain paramount. The potential for deception, anonymity, and digital intimacy presents significant challenges that demand moral vigilance. Islamic ethics emphasizes safeguarding honor (”˜ird) and preventing harm (dharar), necessitating caution in applying classical rulings to modern contexts. The study concludes that social media-based khitbah reflects the adaptability of Islamic jurisprudence to new technological realities, while also underlining the importance of ethical discipline in digital religious practices.

Abstract

Abstract

Aceh is a special autonomous region within the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, as recognized in Article 18B of the 1945 Constitution. The prolonged conflict between the Central Government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) was resolved through the Memorandum of Understanding in Helsinki, which laid the foundation for the establishment of the Wali Nanggroe Institution (LWN). The existence of the LWN is regulated under Law Number 11 of 2006 on the Governance of Aceh, as well as Aceh Qanun Number 8 of 2012 and Qanun Number 9 of 2013. The LWN is positioned as an independent customary leadership institution functioning as a unifying body for the Acehnese people under the leadership of the Wali Nanggroe. This study examines whether the existence of the LWN aligns with the concept of Aceh’s special autonomy, evaluates its effectiveness, analyzes its participation in governance, and formulates an ideal framework for its future role. The research employs a normative juridical method with a prescriptive analytical specification, complemented by an empirical juridical approach through literature review and field interviews. The findings indicate that the LWN has not functioned effectively. Its large institutional structure is disproportionate to its duties and functions, resulting in significant budgetary burdens. The perceived political alignment of the Wali Nanggroe has reduced public trust and weakened its neutral role as a unifying figure, particularly amid political dynamics between the Aceh Government and the Aceh Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRA). In addition, the lack of harmonious relations between the LWN and the Katibul Wali has hindered institutional performance. The study recommends revising the relevant qanun by simplifying the institutional structure, clarifying internal relations, and strengthening the independence and moral authority of the Wali Nanggroe within the framework of Aceh’s special autonomy.

Abstract

The existence of Tuha Peut as a representative institution at the gampong level constitutes an essential component of Aceh’s customary governance system, integrating principles of local democracy with local wisdom. However, the selection mechanisms of Tuha Peut in Aceh Besar Regency vary across gampongs, raising important questions regarding how customary values, community participation, and social representation are manifested in the selection process. This study aims to analyze the selection models of Tuha Peut as a representation of local wisdom within the customary governance system of Aceh Besar Regency. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on Gampong Ateuk Anggok, Ingin Jaya District, and Gampong Meunasah Papeun, Krueng Barona Jaya District. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation and subsequently analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal two distinct models of Tuha Peut selection. Gampong Ateuk Anggok applies a direct election mechanism that emphasizes political participation, transparency, and electoral legitimacy, whereas Gampong Meunasah Papeun employs a deliberative mechanism within each dusun that prioritizes consensus, territorial representation, community leadership, and social acceptance. These two models demonstrate that democracy at the gampong level is not implemented uniformly but adapts to local social structures and customary traditions. The study concludes that the Tuha Peut selection model represents a form of customary-based local democracy that integrates participation, deliberation, representation, and community legitimacy into gampong governance.
