Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: The risk of ineffective myocardial perfusion in hypertension is a risk of decreased coronary artery circulation which can disrupt myocardial metabolism. Healthy lifestyle modification as a non-pharmacological therapeutic measure to prevent the risk of decreasing myocardial perfusion by carrying out physical activity through isometric handgrip exercise therapy. The success of this therapy is influenced by family support by carrying out five family health tasks. Objective: To determine the application of isometric handgrip exercise therapy to overcome the risk of ineffective myocardial perfusion in hypertensive patients in the family. Method: This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a case study strategy, using 2 participants, namely family members who experience hypertension in the family. The action was carried out for 5 consecutive days with 1 intervention each day. Results: Isometric handgrip exercise therapy in both patients showed that patient 1's blood pressure before therapy was 150/97 mmHg to 120/75 mmHg with radial pulse results before therapy of 83 x/minute to 80 x/minute. Meanwhile, in patient 2, the blood pressure results before therapy were 150/104 mmHg to 143/95 mmHg with the radial pulse results before therapy being 73 x/minute to 60 x/minute. The decrease in blood pressure and radial pulse lasted for 5 consecutive days. Family members are able to apply this therapy to overcome the main problem of risk of ineffective myocardial perfusion. Conclusion: Isometric handgrip exercise therapy is effective in reducing blood pressure and radial pulse in hypertensive patients in the family.
