Abstract

ABSTRACT As the important factors in EFL speaking classroom activities, building students’ motivation and interaction in EFL speaking classroom should be designed in meaningful ways. Many research studies reported the variety ways in minimizing the problems as well as proposed innovative ways in teaching speaking skill. One of the ways that recommended by the researches is inside-outside circle strategy. It is a way that students can work cooperatively and raise their motivation to talk and interact with others. The classroom-based research was conducted with only one cycle implemented the strategy. 30 students at the first grade of Multimedia Program at SMK Negeri 6 Ambon were participated in this study. The results showed that during the implementation of inside-outside circle strategy in the classroom activities, the students could actively involve in expressing their ideas based on the given topics, they could build good interaction in the inside and outside a group, and showed high motivation in speaking classroom activities.

Abstract

Abstract : Learning styles are placed as the important role for students and it is the key to students success in learning. Therefore, students really need to recognize their learning styles that are appropriate to themselves to figure out their learning strategies that lead them to their learning objectives that can be effectively achieved. This study is aimed at describing; 1) the learning styles on XI grade students at SMA Negeri Siwalima , 2) the learning strategies of XI grade students at SMA Negeri Siwalima, and 3) the impact of students’ learning styles and their learning strategies in mastering English language of XI grade students at SMA Negeri Siwalima. Descriptive qualitative study design which is supported with visual essay was used to conduct the data. 28 students were involved as the participants of the study Some instruments were applied namely classroom observation, field notes, in-depth interview and review documents to collect the data and it was analyzed by using triangulation method. The results of the study show that (1) the learning styles of XI grade students at SMA Negeri Siwalima are visual learners, auditory learners and kinesthetic learners. Most students have learning styles as Kinesthetic learners (15 students), follow by auditory learners (10 students) and visual learners (3 students). The purpose of using learning styles is to find the best ways for both students to learn effectively and teachers to teach efficiently. (2) The students use varied learning strategies based on their learning styles. Each learning styles has different learning strategies as well as the strengths and weaknesses. (3) There are close relationship between students’ learning styles, their learning strategies and their learning achievement particularly in mastering English language. The more the students know about their learning styles and learning strategies, the better they will have improvement in mastering English language.

Abstract

Flash card strategy as a strategy for increasing students' vocabulary skills at eight grades of SMP Negeri 3 Pulau-Pulau Babar. As one of the 3T areas, this school is limited in terms of infrastructure and teachers. Therefore, it is necessary to use the appropriate strategy to support students in their learning process. This research used classroom based research. The data were collected by field notes and interviews which are filled by students of the study. The findings of the study showed that most of the eight grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Pulau-Pulau Babar liked to use flash card strategy as their learning strategy in increasing vocabulary. Through this strategy, students seemed enjoy and enthusiastic as long as the process of teaching and learning English vocabulary in the classroom. So that they were easier in increasing their vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe students' difficulties in reading comprehension, causes of students’ difficulties, and the solution to overcome students’ difficulties in reading comprehension. This research used a qualitative descriptive method and this research used three instruments. They were questionnaire, observation, and interview. The research findings was some students’ difficulties in reading comprehension because they were misunderstanding the words, difficult to understand the long sentences, difficult to find the main idea, misunderstanding grammar, and difficulty in making conclusion. As a way to increase the students’ vocabularies, they have to learn the words, practice diligently, and learn to understand English reading. To help students become more proficient in reading comprehension, teachers must provide them with different reading practices.

Abstract

This service activity was carried out by several students from the English Language Education Study Program who are the administrators of the Pattimura University-PSDKU Study Program Student Association (HMPS), Southwest Maluku Regency, which was also attended by 3 lecturers. HMPS English Language Education, which is an internal student organization in campus, apart from organizing academic activity programs, HMPS also provides non-academic activity programs. One of them, HMPS has a role in carrying out Community Service activities which are oriented towards the school community through one of the field I programs "Field of Knowledge and Reasoning". This PKM is realized through learning actions in the classroom with several topics, namely "Transportation, Human Body Parts, and Introducing Yourself" in grades 4, 5 and 6 at SD Inpres Werwaru. Learning English, which is still a challenge today, especially at the elementary school level, is carried out through planned activities in creative ways that are varied and fun for the students. The implementation of PKM in this school was carried out well and received a positive response not only from the Headmaster and Teachers, but also the students expressed their high curiosity during the one more hour teaching and learning process. It is expected that, this activity will provide benefits for students to continue learning and can motivate themselves to learn English from an early age

Abstract

The objective of this study was to improve students speaking abilities of the eleven grade students at SMA NEGERI 13 MBD, which consisted to 24 students. This research used Classroom Action Research. The steps were preliminary study, planning, implementation, evaluation and reflection. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test, teacher observation and the students’ feedback through questionnaire. This study occurred over two cycles and took over of nine meetings. The data showed that the first cycle was not successful because it only achieved 36. 27 % success rate. Therefore, it was then continued to second cycle and there was an increase to 84.1%. Based on the outcomes of the use of vlog it proven to have a significant positive impact on students’ speaking proficiency especially in four main aspects, performance, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Through vlog the students were able to deliver their effort to make a video in an innovative and imaginative way, giving them the courage to express themselves.

Abstract

This study aimed to (a) find out kinds of the Students Strategies used to overcome their anxiety in speaking English; and (b) find out the factors that influence students’ anxiety in speaking English. The data was collected from second-grade students at SMK Negeri 6 Maluku Barat Daya as the subject. This study used a mixed method. The instruments used were interviews and questionnaires. The interview was distributed to 6 students based on students' grades, for the highest, the middle, and the lowest two students consisting of the Department of Agriculture, livestock, and Fisheries. The questionnaire was adapted from Horwitz and Cope’s (1986) which contained 15 statements. The questionnaire used was a Likert scale. Based on the questionnaire, the students preferred to resignation strategy to overcome their anxiety in speaking English. The percentage of resignations was 73%. The second strategy was preparation there were 66%. The third strategy was positive thinking, there were 65%. The fourth strategy was peer seeking, there were 45%. And the lowest strategy was relaxation, there were 33%. The result of the interview showed that the frequent of students’ strategies to overcome anxiety was caused by two factors; unfamiliarity, and attention from others.
