Abstract

Communal iftar meals during Ramadan are often analysed as a homogeneous in-group practice, yet this overlooks their role as spaces for encounters across the internal diversity of the Muslim world in pluralistic cities. This article examines joint iftar meals in Kuala Lumpur—where diverse traditions converge—as a case of intra-Muslim conviviality. Through a qualitative ethnographic design (observation, interviews and document analysis), this study explores how communal religious meals foster cross-cultural cohesion and what underpins this, by analysing these practices through the sociology of commensality (Simmel, Fischler), theories of ritual interaction and solidarity (Collins, Durkheim), and the literature on urban and multicultural conviviality (Amin, Gilroy). The cohesion of communal iftar depends on institutional infrastructure, the layout of the dining area, and the food served as a medium for exchange. Differences are negotiated through commensality, giving rise to a sense of togetherness that extends from ritual spaces into the public sphere. The hospitality of the mosque, as an infrastructure of intra-Muslim conviviality, shapes a vernacular cosmopolitanism at the table, whilst simultaneously revealing its boundaries—who is welcomed and who remains on the margins of urban Islamic social life.

Abstract

Javanese society deeply embraces the supernatural, with cultural belief in forming a core of their cultural identity. However, a comprehensive understanding of the roots of this belief system within Javanese culture remains limited, particularly in how myths and folklore intersect with historical and cultural contexts to shape contemporary supernatural worldviews. This study aimed to elucidate the formation, evolution, and integration of supernatural beliefs into the daily lives of Javanese people, addressing a significant research gap in Indonesian cultural studies. Employing a cross-sectional approach with qualitative analysis, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with eight knowledgeable individuals from Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java, and participant observation in Yogyakarta museums and cultural centers. The analysis revealed that myths and mystics folklore often serve as explanations for unexplained natural phenomena, fostering a complex cosmology where spirits and supernatural forces are integral to everyday existence. The prevalence of these narratives is significantly shaped by Java's historical and cultural trajectory. This study underscores the enduring significance of traditional beliefs in Javanese society and contributes novel insights into the intersection of folklore, history, and contemporary supernatural worldviews in Indonesia. Future research could explore the impact of contemporary influences like popular culture, social media, and globalization on these perceptions and engagements

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas pengelola UMKM pariwisata melalui penerapan Green Operations Management yang mengintegrasikan efisiensi operasional dengan prinsip pariwisata berkelanjutan. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dengan melibatkan 20 UMKM pariwisata di Kawasan Perkampungan Budaya Betawi Setu Babakan, Kecamatan Jagakarsa, Jakarta Selatan, yang terdiri atas usaha kuliner, cendera mata, serta jasa pendukung aktivitas pariwisata. Pelaksanaan kegiatan meliputi identifikasi kondisi awal, pelatihan, pemetaan proses operasional, penyusunan Green Standard Operating Procedure (Green SOP), implementasi, serta monitoring dan evaluasi. Materi pendampingan mencakup efisiensi energi dan air, pengelolaan dan pemilahan sampah, pengurangan food waste, pengendalian persediaan, sustainable purchasing, serta pemanfaatan pemasok lokal. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan peserta dari nilai rata-rata pre-test sebesar 62,4 menjadi 84,8 pada post-test, atau meningkat sebesar 35,9%. Program juga menghasilkan enam Green SOP yang terdiri atas SOP Efisiensi Penggunaan Energi, SOP Efisiensi Penggunaan Air, SOP Pengelolaan dan Pemilahan Sampah, SOP Pengurangan Food Waste, SOP Pengendalian Persediaan, serta SOP Sustainable Purchasing dan Pemasok Lokal. Hasil monitoring operasional menunjukkan penurunan konsumsi energi sebesar 12,4%, konsumsi air sebesar 12,5%, sampah operasional sebesar 22,1%, food waste sebesar 23,7%, dan biaya operasional sebesar 10,8%, serta peningkatan proporsi pembelian dari pemasok lokal sebesar 24,4% dibandingkan kondisi awal. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa penerapan Green Operations Management dapat menjadi pendekatan praktis untuk menerjemahkan prinsip pariwisata berkelanjutan ke dalam sistem operasional UMKM yang lebih terukur, efisien, dan berorientasi pada perbaikan berkelanjutan.
