Abstract

This research focuses on how identity, oppression, and resistance are depicted in the poem Biṭāqat Huwiyyah (Identity Card) written by Mahmoud Darwish, utilizing Alan Swingewood’s sociological perspective on literature. The poem was chosen for its portrayal of the lived experiences of the Palestinian community affected by conflict, occupation, and identity issues. The aim of the study is to explore how the social context and conditions, along with the author’s perspective, contribute to the poem's meaning and to uncover the different representations of identity, oppression, and resistance found within it. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, gathering data through library research and notetaking. The main data includes verses from the poem that illustrate themes of identity, oppression, and resistance. Findings indicate that identity is showcased in the poem through the acknowledgment of Arab-Palestinian identity, emotional bonds to the homeland, and shared historical consciousness. Oppression is depicted through the seizure of land, socio-economic exclusion, and bureaucratic control over personal identity. In contrast, resistance is conveyed through the use of language, symbols, and emotional expressions that challenge occupation and the negation of national identity. Thus, this research helps sociology of literature studies grow by illustrating how identity, oppression, and resistance are shown in the conversation between the author's viewpoint, the social context, and the text. Moreover, it broadens the scope of earlier research on Biṭāqat Huwiyyah, which has mainly concentrate on semiotic and linguistic aspects.

Abstract

The film Alkhallat+ by Fahad Alammari is a social reflection of modern Saudi Arabian society, rich in human values. This study aims to analyze aspects of humanity, both individually and socially, using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism theory. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, with a dialectical analysis technique between the structure of the film text and the social context of contemporary Arab society. Previous studies show that the film Alkhallat+ a study of lucien goldmann’s genetic structuralism has been analyzed through various approaches, such as structural functionalism, pragmatics, and gender deconstruction. However, there has been no study that specifically focuses on the human aspects within the framework of genetic structuralism. Therefore, this study makes an original contribution by revealing the relationship between the individual conflicts of the characters and the collective worldview of society. The results of the study show that this film contains human facts that include moral conflicts, family tensions, gender bias, and social pressures that represent the reality of modern Arab society.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson and the politeness principles proposed by Geoffrey Leech used by the character Afaf in the film From The Ashes directed by Khalid Fahad. This research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method. The research data consist of Afaf's utterances, collected through the non-participatory observation method and note-taking technique. The data were analyzed using the pragmatic identity method. The findings reveal 83 data items, consisting of 39 politeness strategy data, dominated by the bald-on record strategy with 32 occurrences, and 44 politeness principle data, dominated by violations of the tact maxim with 26 occurrences. The analysis also indicates that the bald-on record strategy may be associated with either maxim compliance or maxim violation, depending on the context of the utterance. Meanwhile, positive politeness is more frequently associated with maxim compliance, whereas the off-record strategy tends to be associated with maxim violations. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Afaf predominantly employs the bald-on record strategy and tends to violate politeness principles more frequently in her interactions.

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of how moral messages are constructed and communicated in films that portray socio-political conflict within plural societies, particularly in contexts shaped by historical trauma and sectarian division. Focusing on Qadiyya Raqm 23 (The Insult), directed by Ziad Doueiri, the study aims to uncover the moral meanings embedded in the film and to explain how cinematic signs function as vehicles of ethical discourse. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, emphasizing the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. Key scenes, dialogues, and visual symbols are analyzed to identify patterns of meaning and ideological representation. The results reveal that the film represents personal conflict as a symbolic extension of collective memory, identity politics, and unresolved historical grievances in Lebanese society. At the denotative level, the narrative depicts a legal dispute between two individuals, while at the connotative level it exposes deep-seated emotions of humiliation, pride, and resentment. At the mythic level, the film constructs a broader moral discourse that critiques inherited hatred, sectarian prejudice, and social discrimination, while emphasizing human dignity, empathy, and the necessity of reconciliation. This study contributes to film and cultural studies by demonstrating the relevance of Barthesian semiotics in decoding moral narratives in Middle Eastern cinema. It also offers insight into how film can function as a reflective medium for promoting ethical awareness and social coexistence in plural and post-conflict societies.
