Abstract

This community service project implemented the digital storytelling to enhance English language engagement among young learners at a community-based learning centre in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The project addressed challenges faced by elementary and junior high school students who have limited access to interactive, technology-based learning resources and lack authentic exposure to English outside the classroom. The project involved 19 participants aged 7-14 years old who engaged in storytelling sessions. The results showed a significant improvement in participant engagement, with 94.74% of participants reporting a high satisfaction with the storytelling method. Participants also expressed strong interest in the storytelling method and suggested adding more interactive elements such as games and songs. The findings confirms that digital storytelling can be an engaging and effective way of educational approach for teaching English.

Abstract

This study investigates Indonesian EFL teachers’ perceptions and implementation of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in rural Central Kalimantan. Using a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews, it explores how teachers integrate content, pedagogy, and technology in their classroom practices. The findings show that teachers demonstrate strong confidence in content and technological knowledge, adapting instruction to students’ needs and displaying positive attitudes toward technology integration. However, challenges persist in pedagogical domains, particularly in fostering collaboration, and are compounded by infrastructural limitations, digital inequities, and restrictive institutional policies. This study highlights rural teachers’ adaptive strategies under constrained conditions, expanding TPACK beyond urban settings. The implications call for teacher training that emphasizes pedagogically grounded and context-sensitive approaches, and for policies that strengthen rural digital infrastructure and promote equitable access. Future research should broaden the extent to a broader rural context, include learner perspectives, and examine teachers’ sustainable TPACK development.

Abstract

Translanguaging is increasingly recognized as a way to support learning in multilingual EFL classrooms, yet its concrete implementation in grammar instruction and lecturers’ perspectives in under-researched regions such as Central Kalimantan remain unclear. This study examines how translanguaging is used in an Intermediate English Grammar class at a public university and how the lecturer evaluates its role in English language teaching. Using a qualitative case study, data were collected through nonparticipant classroom observations and a semi-structured interview, then analyzed using structural and planning-based classifications of translanguaging. The findings show that translanguaging is highly patterned at the sentence level through inter-sentential, intra-sentential, insertion, and tag uses, with English maintained as the main medium of instruction. The lecturer employs brief, targeted use of Bahasa Indonesia to clarify complex grammar, scaffold understanding, and enhance engagement while keeping its proportion low. These results suggest that principled translanguaging can strengthen comprehension and participation without hindering target language development.
