Abstract

In the context of interreligious group relations, grassroots society tends to demonstrate adaptation strategies to promote harmonious social living. Based on the social identity perspective, such conditions encompass the dynamic process in which diverse religious group identities are endorsed within a coherent superordinate identity. This study explores the dynamics of integration as a strategy to maintain religious harmony. A qualitative case study was conducted in a rural community with diverse religious groups in Central Java. Data were gathered through participative observations, semi-structured interviews, casual conversations, and document analysis. We employed an abductive strategy to analyze the rich empirical materials gathered. The findings reveal the integrative construction of a common ingroup identity, that embraces the essence of unity in diversity. As a strong common ingroup identity indicates, it requires the development of a transcendent identity at the subgroup level. This process encourages a positive orientation towards others to preserve equality among groups. Of utmost importance, this integration most likely plays a pivotal role in addressing both social harmony and social tension. This study highlights that the strategy of integration is explained through the formation of an inclusive common ingroup identity, that illustrates the node of bonding and bridging for existing religious groups to live together.

Abstract

Religious diversity in Indonesia extends beyond interreligious differences to include intra-religious sub-groups, often termed “streams” (aliran), distinguished by variations in rituals, congregations, religious symbols, and theological orientation (madhhab). While interreligious friendships have been widely studied, little is known about how individuals navigate intra-religious diversity in shaping friendship preferences. This study explores the relevance of religious streams in friendships to uncover preferences for engaging in same- or cross-group friendships within the same religion. This study was conducted by administering an online qualitative survey and analyzing the 131 valid responses using thematic analysis. Results indicate that most participants (89%) reported that religious streams did not influence their friendship preferences, expressing openness to friendships across different religious streams. However, a small proportion of participants expressed a preference for homophily or same-group friendship. The findings are presented into two themes: (1) preference for same-group friendships, reflecting homophily as a means for personal religious advancement; and (2) preference for cross-group friendship, characterized by pluralistic openness and religious dialogue navigation. As a synthesis, religious streams in friendship preferences reflect attitudes in negotiating the importance of social identity and navigating religious dialogue when engaging with religious matters. These two preferences should not be viewed as inherently contradictory; rather, they demonstrate the dynamic nature of religious life within pluralistic societies.

Abstract

Literasi pada anak tidak hanya berkaitan dengan kemampuan membaca, tetapi juga dengan cara anak memahami, mengalami, dan menceritakan kembali pengalaman dan lingkungannya. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan memperkenalkan dan memfasilitasi praktik literasi kontekstual pada anak melalui program Aktivitas Kontekstual Anak dalam Literasi (AKAR), dengan menghubungkan pengalaman keseharian, lingkungan sekitar, aktivitas bercerita, dan refleksi. Program ini juga memanfaatkan kreasi pohon literasi sebagai media untuk merefleksikan dan mendokumentasikan pengalaman anak. Kegiatan ini melibatkan 19 anak anggota Sanggar RASTI Desa Kaliputu, Kecamatan Kudus, dengan tujuan untuk memperkenalkan literasi kehidupan sehari-hari kepada anak, melalui aktivitas kontekstual dan partisipatif, serta memperkuat peran komunitas desa dalam pendidikan anak. Rancangan dan implementasi pengabdian ini menggunakan pendekatan Participatory Action Research (PAR), dengan melibatkan rangkaian kegiatan seperti warming-up, ice-breaking, walking tour, dan storytelling. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan keterlibatan aktif anak dalam aktivitas literasi kontekstual, yang ditunjukkan melalui partisipasi, respons terhadap aktivitas, kemampuan menarasikan pengalaman, dan produk reflektif yang dihasilkan selama kegiatan. Sebagai implikasi, kegiatan ini dapat memperkuat fungsi pendidikan di sanggar desa dengan memanfaatkan potensi lingkungan dan pengalaman keseharian sebagai sumber belajar, sekaligus berkontribusi untuk menguatkan pendidikan berbasis komunitas masyarakat.
