Abstract

Arabic is frequently used in official religious activities; however, its social functions have not been widely examined from a sociolinguistic perspective. This study aims to analyze the social functions of Arabic in formal religious activities at the Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Mandailing Natal Regency using a sociolinguistic approach. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observations of formal religious activities, analysis of institutional documents, and interviews with relevant informants. Data analysis is conducted based on the concepts of language domains and social functions of language within sociolinguistic studies. The findings reveal that Arabic functions as a religious symbol that reinforces a sacred atmosphere, strengthens the Islamic identity of the institution, and provides religious legitimacy to formal activities. In addition, the use of Arabic contributes to the construction of religious authority, even though not all participants fully understand the linguistic meanings of the utterances. These findings indicate that Arabic in the context of religious bureaucracy carries significant social and institutional meanings beyond its communicative function. This study is expected to contribute to sociolinguistic studies on religion and to enhance understanding of the role of Arabic in formal religious settings in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper examines online gambling in Indonesia from the perspective of Maqashid Shariah. Previous studies have primarily focused on its legal status, psychological effects, economic consequences, and family-related problems, while limited attention has been given to how online gambling simultaneously undermines the fundamental objectives of Islamic law. Addressing this gap, the study analyzes online gambling as a form of systemic mafsadah that threatens multiple dimensions of human welfare (maslahah). Employing a qualitative library research approach, the study analyzes scholarly publications, official reports, and relevant academic literature using qualitative content analysis. The findings demonstrate that online gambling generates interconnected harms extending beyond financial loss, eroding the protection of religion (hifz al-din), intellect (hifz al-'aql), wealth (hifz al-mal), family and future generations (hifz al-nasl), and ultimately social stability. Rather than constituting merely a prohibited form of maisir, online gambling represents a multidimensional threat that weakens the ethical, economic, and social foundations of Muslim society. This study contributes to contemporary Maqashid Shariah scholarship by proposing a systemic framework for understanding digital gambling and offers a normative basis for developing preventive policies and strengthening family resilience in the digital era.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini membahas penguatan nilai moderasi beragama melalui aktivitas pengajian di kalangan perempuan Desa Handel. Fenomena meningkatnya tantangan intoleransi dan radikalisme menuntut upaya kolektif untuk memperkuat pemahaman keagamaan yang seimbang dan inklusif. Pengajian perempuan dipandang sebagai sarana strategis dalam proses internalisasi nilai moderasi karena menyediakan ruang belajar agama yang partisipatif, dialogis, serta relevan dengan kehidupan sosial masyarakat desa. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan menelaah literatur moderasi beragama, teori pembelajaran sosial, dan kepemimpinan komunitas. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pengajian perempuan tidak hanya menjadi forum penyebaran ajaran agama, tetapi juga wadah pembentukan sikap toleransi, musyawarah, dan penghormatan terhadap keberagaman. Peran tokoh agama perempuan sebagai teladan dan fasilitator turut memperkuat transformasi nilai moderasi ke dalam perilaku sehari-hari anggota pengajian. Dengan demikian, pengajian perempuan di Desa Handel berfungsi sebagai benteng sosial dalam mencegah radikalisme, sekaligus memperkuat harmoni sosial antarwarga yang majemuk. Temuan ini menegaskan pentingnya dukungan kebijakan dan pendampingan berkelanjutan agar kegiatan pengajian terus menjadi motor penguatan nilai moderasi beragama di tingkat akar rumput.
