Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate: (1) the application of the Community Language Learning (CLL) model on students’ speaking competence, (2) the students’ speaking competence before and after the implementation of the CLL model, and (3) whether there is a significant effect of the CLL model on students’ speaking competence.  The population of this study consisted of 248 tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Padangsidimpuan. Using systematic sampling, a total of 35 students were selected as the sample. This research employed an experimental method. Data were collected through observation and speaking tests, and the results were analyzed using a paired-sample t-test. The findings revealed that the application of the CLL model on students’ speaking ability scored 3.6, categorized as “Very Good”. The students’ mean speaking score before the implementation of CLL was 78.51 (“Good”), which increased to 83.42 (“Very Good”) after the treatment. The t-test calculation yielded a t-value of 7.15, which exceeds the critical t-value of 2.03 at a 5% significance level (df = 35). Therefore, it is concluded that there is a statistically significant effect of the Community Language Learning model on students’ speaking competence among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Padangsidimpuan.

Abstract

This community service (Summer Social Work #4) activity aimed to improve students’ public speaking skills and self-confidence in using English at SMA Negeri 1 Ubud. The background of this activity was based on students’ low confidence in speaking English in public despite having formally studied English at school. The method employed in this program was practice-based training, implemented through interactive lectures, discussions, simulations, and direct public speaking practice in English. The activity was conducted in several sessions involving tenth- and eleventh-grade students. The results indicated improvements in students’ self-confidence, speaking courage, and ability to express ideas orally in English. The discussion of the findings suggests that a practice-based approach and a supportive learning environment played an important role in reducing students’ speaking anxiety. In addition, students’ active participation during the training strengthened their positive attitudes toward the use of English in academic contexts. These findings confirm that community service–based public speaking training can be an effective strategy to support English language learning at the secondary school level.

Abstract

This study investigates English communication anxiety among first-semester students in an international class at a private university in Bali, focusing on peer comparison and support and coping. Drawing on Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety and Social Comparison Theory, it examines how these two factors relate to students’ anxiety. Data were collected from 38 students using a bilingual questionnaire with Likert-scale items and open-ended questions. The results show that students experienced a moderate level of English communication anxiety. Correlation and regression analyses revealed that peer comparison is positively associated with anxiety, whereas support and coping are negatively associated with anxiety. Qualitative responses indicate that students feel both motivated and anxious and that teacher clarity, a relaxed classroom atmosphere, peer encouragement, and gentle correction help them manage anxiety. The findings suggest that EMI programmes need to address affective as well as academic dimensions to build more supportive international-class environments.
