Abstract

This paper describes and analyzes the ontological metaphor language in a traditional Batak Simalungunese tribe, Mambere Tungkot, Duda-Duda, and Sulang-Sulang Pahompu in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study aims to present an analytical view of the customary tradition of thanking parents for their contribution to one’s life. This is carried out in regular conversation through the language of metaphors, in particular, ontology metaphors. Ontological metaphors describe human qualities that are given to nonhuman entities (Kovesces, 2010: 33-38).  This study applies the descriptive qualitative method to discuss the ontological metaphor depicted in the traditional ceremony. The data of the research were taken from the utterances of the speakers, namely: master of the ceremony, parents, and children involved in the ceremony. The concept of this study is the communication theory in the context of the ontological metaphor to analyze the data. The result of the study shows that most of the utterances in the traditional ceremony use ontological metaphors.

Abstract

The study analyzes types of presupposition in Joji’s song lyrics. The study's objective is to find the types of presuppositions in Joji’s song lyrics in Joji’s song lyrics. The study uses the descriptive qualitative method with an interactive model data analysis by Miles et al (2014). The data were taken from the verified song lyrics platform, Genius.com®. There are 16 data sources from different albums taken and the total of data found are 65 presuppositions. The analysis showed that only five types of presuppositions were found in the selected song lyrics, which are existential presuppositions (34%), structural presuppositions (25%), factive presuppositions (21%), Counterfactual presuppositions (12%), and lexical presuppositions (8%). The most dominant type of presupposition found in JOJI’s selected song lyrics is existential presupposition with 22 occurrences and the least type of presupposition used in the selected song lyrics is the lexical presupposition with 5 occurrences. The singer more tends to explain about the presence of other entities in the found presumptions from his songs.

Abstract

This research analyzes Julian Treasure's use of deixis in his TED Talk, "How to Speak So That People Want to Listen. The study identifies and classifies the differences of deictic expressions used in the conversation by using a pragmatic analysis approach. The results show that Treasure makes good use of person, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social deixis to improve clarity in speech and engagement among audiences. This analysis advances our knowledge of deixis's role in spoken discourse and its importance for persuasive public speaking.

Abstract

This research investigates the underlying assumptions evident in the “Kamala Harris Discusses U.S. Relationship with Israel” segment aired by 60 Minutes, delving into how these implicit beliefs inform the dialogue and affect audiences’ interpretations. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the research pinpoints significant presuppositions, including the belief that Benjamin Netanyahu serves as the Prime Minister of Israel, the perception of the Biden-Harris administration’s capacity to sway international policies, the association of Iran with militant organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah, and the collective recognition of the Middle East as the central geopolitical framework. These presuppositions, derived from shared cultural, political, and social knowledge, facilitate effective communication by obviating the need for extensive explanations. The study underscores how these assumptions serve as crucial components in the communication process, shaping the audience’s grasp of the intricate matters pertaining to U.S.-Israel relations, military support, diplomacy, and regional stability in the Middle East. It stresses the important function of presuppositions in determining how delicate geopolitical subjects are articulated and comprehended by both speakers and receivers.

Abstract

In Taylor Swift’s speech given at New York University in 2022 for her graduation ceremony, Taylor Swift used several presuppositions in her speech. Of course, presuppositions, as assumptions inherent to the emotional approach, are crucial to determining the feeling and argumentation of the message Taylor Swift conveys to the audience. Through this analysis, the researcher will identify and explain how these presuppositions can build an emotional connection with the audience and at the same time empower the graduates through her presuppositions.

Abstract

People nowadays often communicate using multiple languages. When the speaker uses two or more languages, regularly switching and blending them when communicating is known as code-switching. This research aims to find out and show readers the types of code-switching and why code-switching is used in Tomohiro Yamashita's YouTube channel vlogs. In this research, the writer used the descriptive qualitative research design. The theories proposed by (Poplack, 1980) were used to classify the types of code-switching and theories by (Hoffmann, 1991) were used to find out the reasons of using code-switching. In the 1st video, there were 66 data of code-switching found with 50 (75.76%) inter-sentential, 9 (13.64%) intra-sentential, and 7 (10.6%) tag-switching. In the 2nd video, there were 84 data of code-switching found with 57 (67.86%) inter-sentential, 25 (29.76%) intra-sentential, and 2 (2.38%) tag-switching. In the 3rd video, there were 29 data of code-switching found with 17 (58.62%) inter-sentential, 11 (37.93%) intra-sentential, and 1 (3.45%) tag-switching. In the 4th video, there were 23 data of code-switching found with 12 (52.17%) inter-sentential, 11 (47.83%) intra-sentential, and 0 tag-switching. In the 5th video, there were 7 data of code-switching with 4 (57.14%) inter-sentential, 3 (42.86%) intra-sentential, and 0 tag-switching. Besides that, the writer also found several reasons for using code-switching in Tomohiro Yamashita's YouTube channel vlogs, including, talking about particular topic, be emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.

Abstract

This study examines the use of presupposition in the movie Five Feet Apart directed by Justin Baldoni, focusing on its role in enhancing the narrative and character interactions. Presupposition, a linguistic concept that assumes certain information to be true within communication, is analyzed to explore how it contributes to the film’s emotional depth, thematic development, and overall storytelling. The research applies a qualitative approach to identify and categorize the types of presuppositions present, such as existential, lexical, factive, non-factive, structural, and counterfactual. It further investigates how these presuppositions function in the dialogues to convey implicit meanings, reveal character motivations, and foster relational dynamics among the protagonists. The findings highlight that presuppositions are strategically employed to subtly portray themes such as love, illness, resilience, and the boundaries imposed by cystic fibrosis, which the central characters face. By embedding unspoken truths and shared understandings within the conversations, the film effectively engages viewers, making the narrative more relatable and emotionally impactful. This study contributes to the fields of pragmatics and film studies by demonstrating how presupposition can be a powerful tool in cinematic storytelling, enriching both the linguistic and emotional layers of a narrative. It underscores the importance of linguistic analysis in understanding the deeper elements of film communication and the nuanced ways in which language shapes audience perceptions and experiences.

Abstract

In "Mufasa: The Lion King" (2024), the screenplay skillfully utilizes implicature as a crucial element that enhances storytelling and adds depth to the emotional and thematic aspects of movie script. Implicature, a concept introduced by philosopher H. P. Grice, refers to the implied meanings that emerge in conversation, where speakers communicate ideas indirectly, relying on context and shared understanding between characters and the audience.This article delves into how the script of "Mufasa" employs both conversational and conventional implicatures to illuminate the intricacies of Mufasa’s character, particularly his relationships with his brother Scar and his son Simba, as well as broader themes of leadership, responsibility, and legacy. Through subtle and indirect communication, Mufasa conveys vital lessons while navigating his own internal and external conflicts, thus enriching the film's exploration of leadership and personal growth. By examining key dialogues and character interactions, this study underscores the significance of implicature in shaping the audience’s comprehension of character dynamics and the deeper meanings within the narrative. The use of implicature in "Mufasa" not only enhances character development but also engages viewers in an active process of interpretation, inviting them to read between the lines and discover the unspoken teachings woven throughout the dialogue.
