Abstract

Teacher-student politeness has been well-explored over the years, but mostly in direct or face-to-face communication. This study aims to fill the gap of politeness between students and educators in online learning, specifically in the sessions of one of the staple and most used educational platforms during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely Google Classroom. This study applies qualitative research method by describing the phenomenon of the language. This study observed the interaction of 36 English Literature Department students during their Google Classroom sessions from April to July 2021. The researchers analysed the students’ interaction with their lecturer according to Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. Five politeness strategies were identified, namely the positive politeness strategies (i.e., greeting, gratitude and address term), negative politeness (i.e., apology) and vernacular language. The gratitude and address term expression conveyed by “Thank you, Mam” is dominantly used by students to minimize threat when giving comments for every instruction created by lecturer. Results of this study showed that the students use politeness strategies to ensure the effectiveness of online learning, yet they also limit their text-based interaction with the short expressions of politeness such as “Hi, mam” or “Yes, mam”. This finding contributes to shedding light on the aspect of politeness in online interaction in Google Classroom and directs future studies to explore politeness in other contexts.

Abstract

This paper describes and analyzes the ontological metaphor language in a traditional Batak Simalungunese tribe, Mambere Tungkot, Duda-Duda, and Sulang-Sulang Pahompu in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study aims to present an analytical view of the customary tradition of thanking parents for their contribution to one’s life. This is carried out in regular conversation through the language of metaphors, in particular, ontology metaphors. Ontological metaphors describe human qualities that are given to nonhuman entities (Kovesces, 2010: 33-38).  This study applies the descriptive qualitative method to discuss the ontological metaphor depicted in the traditional ceremony. The data of the research were taken from the utterances of the speakers, namely: master of the ceremony, parents, and children involved in the ceremony. The concept of this study is the communication theory in the context of the ontological metaphor to analyze the data. The result of the study shows that most of the utterances in the traditional ceremony use ontological metaphors.

Abstract

This study examines the manifestation of social anxiety in Putu Wijaya’s short story Malu through a literary psychological perspective. Social anxiety is understood as a socially constructed emotional condition shaped by fear of judgment, shame, and social expectations. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research analyzes the psychological states, behavioral responses, and narrative techniques presented in the text. The primary data source is the short story Malu, while secondary sources include scholarly works on psychological criticism, social anxiety, and Indonesian literature. The analysis reveals that social anxiety in Malu is manifested through internal psychological tension, including excessive self-awareness, fear of negative evaluation, and feelings of shame (Malu). These psychological conditions influence the protagonist’s behavior, leading to avoidance, silence, and emotional restraint in social interactions. Additionally, Putu Wijaya employs narrative techniques such as internal monologue, repetition, and absurd situations to effectively represent the protagonist’s emotional struggle and highlight the oppressive nature of social norms. The findings suggest that social anxiety in Malu functions as a mechanism of social control, reinforcing conformity and limiting individual agency. Rather than portraying anxiety as a purely personal disorder, the short story emphasizes its cultural and social dimensions within Indonesian society. This study contributes to literary theory and criticism by demonstrating how psychological analysis can deepen the understanding of emotional representation in Indonesian literary works. It also encourages further interdisciplinary research on the relationship between literature, psychology, and culture.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of collective knowledge in President A.S.’s speeches through the lens of social epistemology, focusing on the period from 2015 to 2020 within the broader temporal frame of 2000–2025. Departing from traditional individualistic accounts of knowledge, the research treats political discourse as a site where knowledge is socially constructed, authorized, and normatively deployed. Presidential speeches are approached not merely as rhetorical instruments but as epistemic practices that shape shared understanding and collective identity. Adopting a qualitative, philosophy-oriented methodology informed by a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and conceptual discourse analysis, the study analyzes official speeches to identify how collective knowledge is linguistically and philosophically framed. The findings reveal that collective knowledge is articulated through multiple forms, including experiential knowledge grounded in shared social experience, historical knowledge rooted in national memory, and institutional or expert-based knowledge that confers epistemic authority. These forms are strategically mobilized to legitimize political decisions, unify the audience, and guide collective action. From a social epistemological perspective, the study highlights significant tensions between epistemic authority and democratic inclusion. While appeals to collective knowledge foster cohesion and legitimacy, they also risk suppressing epistemic plurality and marginalizing dissenting perspectives. By situating presidential discourse within debates on collective intentionality, epistemic authority, and power, this research contributes to philosophical discussions on the ethical and political dimensions of collective knowing. It demonstrates the relevance of social epistemology for understanding how knowledge functions in contemporary political life.
