Abstract

The misleading assumptions of Indonesian-speaking learners of English on the nature of English results in psychological burden inhibiting the process of teaching and learning. The assumptions should be eliminated at the beginning of English class. Besides, the instructor should extensively motivate and encourage the learners to maximize their potentials in learning process.  Such approach will gradually lead the learners to self-confidence and self-discovery.

Abstract

In this research, two participants, my children Ceria Panggabean (CP) and her younger brother Patuan Noel Panggabean (PNP) acquire their first language Bahasa Indonesia in different ways. CP acquires the language in normal stages of language acquisition that matches the theory of Universal Grammar (UG) endorsed by Behaviorism and Social Interactionism but PNP acquires it beyond critical period. CP grows normal physically but PNP cannot stand and walk but crawls. When his physical impairment is overcome, especially when he is able to run, he acquires the language so fast that when he is over 3,5 years, his language proficiency is in the same level as PNP’s. Based on this, at least as hypothesis, abnormal language acquisition or Specific Language Impairment (SLI) may be due to not only brain and organs of speech impairments but also abnormal physical growth that might affect brain. It is also revealed that UG called Nativism is endorsed by empirical phenomenon called Behaviorism and social interaction called Social Interactionism. Besides, criticisms on certain concepts of linguists and recommendations are noted. The data are gathered using methods of Parents’ Diary and Observational Studies via audiotape, to study how each of them goes through acquisition stages, and Experimental Studies with Nipple Sucking Rate test in cooing or prelinguistic stage to find out whether or not they are hearing or deaf. The research covers the acquisition of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics as well as their developments.

Abstract

Concepts including communication patterns in public institutions, media discourse (reports, commercials, television broadcasts, etc.), and the construction of individual and group identities that communicate ideological views, authority, and status are all of importance to critical discourse analysis (CDA). Ad discourse is one of the media discourses that this study uses. The three most well-known and valuable brands that the researcher selected were Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Land Rover, and BMW. This study's objective is to use semiotic analysis and CDA to analyze the data. Within the technique, the researcher employed a qualitative approach. The findings revealed that each brand crafts a unique narrative, leveraging advanced technology, aesthetic appeal, and emotional resonance to maintain a strong market presence. These advertisements are more than just promotional tools; they are meticulously designed works of art that reflect the evolving consumer preferences and competitive dynamics of the automotive industry. The study underscored the importance of strategic messaging in automotive advertising, demonstrating how these brands effectively capture and retain consumer interest through diverse and dynamic marketing approaches. Abstract

The objectives of this study was to investigate phonological conditioning of the multiple affixations pa-hu in Toba Batak. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative approach to describe Toba Batak phenomena deeply. While multiple affixations have been widely examined in Indonesian language  and in other regional languages, its manifestations in Toba Batak remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study fills this gap. The findings reveal four distinct categories of phonologically conditioned allomorphs of the multiple affixations pa-hu in Toba Batak with the following requirements: (1) if the root adjective ends in sound [k], [n], or [ŋ], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-ku]; (2) if the root adjective ends in sound [m] or [p], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-pu]; (3) if the root adjective ends in sound [s], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-su]; and (4) if the root adjective ends in sound [t], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-tu]. The implications highlight the need to protect regional languages like Toba Batak in the face of globalisation and reach applicable domains like cultural revitalisation. Thus, this study advocates for more research on under-represented languages by bridging the gap between theoretical linguistics and real-world conservation initiatives.
