Abstract

Accelerating urbanization and increasing plastic consumption have intensified microplastic contamination in coastal environments, raising serious concerns about marine ecosystem degradation and human food security. Persistent microplastic accumulation threatens marine biodiversity through bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, habitat deterioration, and physiological stress while contaminating commercially important seafood species. This study evaluated the ecological impacts of microplastic accumulation on marine biodiversity and food security across coastal urban regions by examining interactions among environmental contamination, ecosystem resilience, fisheries productivity, seafood safety, and environmental governance. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed using environmental monitoring data from 72 coastal monitoring stations across twelve urban coastal regions. Quantitative analyses included biodiversity assessment, laboratory characterization of microplastics, multivariate statistics, structural equation modeling, hierarchical regression, mediation, and moderation analyses, while qualitative evidence was analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings revealed that increasing microplastic accumulation significantly reduced marine biodiversity, weakened ecosystem resilience, decreased fisheries productivity, and increased seafood contamination. Biodiversity integrity partially mediated environmental contamination and fisheries productivity, whereas environmental governance enhanced ecological resilience through improved waste management and integrated coastal management, supporting long-term ecosystem sustainability and food security in rapidly urbanizing coastal regions.

Abstract

At-risk youth frequently encounter significant socio-economic obstacles, leading to high vulnerability to unemployment and social exclusion. Community-based entrepreneurship training programs are increasingly employed as vital interventions to foster self-sufficiency and build economic resilience. However, empirical evidence specifically quantifying their direct impact on the entrepreneurial mindset of this marginalized demographic remains limited. This research aims to assess the impact of a community-based entrepreneurship training program on fostering an entrepreneurial mindset—specifically entrepreneurial knowledge, self-confidence, and business intention—among at-risk youth. The study also explores the influential role of support factors like mentorship. A mixed-methods design was implemented. The quantitative phase utilized pre- and post-program surveys (N=100) to measure changes in key indicators. The qualitative phase included semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to gain deeper insights into participant experiences and mindset shifts. Data was analyzed using paired t-tests and thematic analysis. Quantitative analysis showed a statistically significant increase across all measured indicators post-program. Entrepreneurial knowledge and confidence in starting a business saw dramatic increases, from 28% to 85% and 32% to 80% respectively. Furthermore, the intention to pursue entrepreneurship rose from 40% to 75%. Qualitative results underscored the crucial role of mentorship and peer networking in translating knowledge into actionable plans. The findings confirm that tailored community-based entrepreneurship training is highly effective and transformative, not only equipping at-risk youth with technical skills but also significantly empowering them psychologically to pursue entrepreneurship as a viable path for socio-economic mobility. This model warrants continued adoption and scalable implementation.

Abstract

Background. The exponential growth of digital data and algorithmic curation has transformed how societies construct, preserve, and remember the past. The phenomenon of digital amnesia the tendency to outsource memory to digital systems reveals a paradox of modern knowledge: while more information is archived than ever before, human capacity for contextual recollection diminishes. Purpose. This study investigates how algorithmic mechanisms within big data archives reconstruct historical narratives and shape collective memory in the digital age. The research aims to analyze the epistemological and ethical implications of algorithmic memory, focusing on how automated retrieval, ranking, and personalization systems mediate historical knowledge and cultural continuity Method. A qualitative multi-case analysis was conducted on digital archival platforms and algorithmic recommendation systems using interpretive content analysis and critical data studies methodology. Results. The findings show that algorithmic archives not only preserve information but actively curate and reinterpret history through patterns of visibility and omission. The findings indicate that memory in the age of big data is not neutral but performative constructed through computational decisions that privilege certain narratives while marginalizing others. Conclusion. The study concludes that the digital era demands a critical redefinition of archival literacy, emphasizing the need for transparency, human oversight, and ethical design in algorithmic systems. Understanding digital amnesia thus becomes essential to safeguarding cultural memory and ensuring that the reconstruction of the past remains plural, accountable, and inclusive.

Abstract

Dengue fever outbreaks in urban areas of Java, Indonesia, have become a significant public health concern, with increasing frequency due to climate variability and human mobility patterns, where the spread of dengue is influenced by environmental conditions such as temperature and rainfall as well as human movement within urban centers, making an understanding of these factors crucial for effective disease control and prevention. This study aims to simulate and predict dengue fever outbreaks in urban Java using AI-driven models based on climate variability and human mobility data, with the research seeking to identify the key factors that contribute to the transmission dynamics of dengue fever in urban settings and to evaluate the effectiveness of predictive models in managing potential outbreaks. The study employs machine learning techniques, including Random Forest and Artificial Neural Networks, to analyze climate data consisting of temperature, rainfall, and humidity alongside human mobility data collected from mobile phone tracking and demographic information, where the data is processed to create a simulation model of dengue fever transmission that is validated against historical outbreak data. The results show that the AI-driven model successfully simulated dengue fever outbreaks, demonstrating a high correlation between climate conditions, human mobility, and the spread of the disease, and indicating that increased mobility during the rainy season significantly amplified the risk of outbreaks in high-density urban areas. Overall, the findings conclude that AI-driven simulations offer a promising approach to understanding and predicting dengue fever outbreaks in urban Java, and by incorporating climate and mobility data, the model provides valuable insights for early warning systems and targeted public health interventions.

Abstract

Background. Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as an innovative educational technology that enables immersive learning experiences, particularly in history education where contextual understanding and perspective-taking are essential. Traditional instructional approaches often face limitations in fostering emotional engagement and sustaining long-term knowledge retention. Purpose. This study aims to examine the impact of VR on student empathy and historical retention, as well as to explore the relationship between immersive experience and learning outcomes in history education. Method. A quasi-experimental mixed-methods design was employed involving 104 students assigned to experimental (VR-based learning) and control (traditional instruction) groups. Data were collected through pretest–posttest assessments to measure retention, empathy questionnaires to assess affective responses, and qualitative reflections to capture students’ experiential insights. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. Results. The findings indicate that VR significantly enhances both student empathy and historical retention compared to conventional instructional methods. A strong relationship is observed between immersive experience, emotional engagement, and improved memory outcomes. Empathy is identified as a mediating factor that strengthens the connection between immersion and knowledge retention. Conclusion. VR offers an effective pedagogical approach for integrating cognitive and affective dimensions of learning in history education. The results highlight the potential of immersive technologies to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences that support deeper understanding and long-term retention. Educators are encouraged to incorporate VR strategically to maximize both emotional engagement and academic achievement.

Abstract

The teaching of English as a foreign language in Indonesia continues to face challenges, particularly in identifying the most effective instructional approach. Previous studies have shown varying results when comparing communicative and grammar-based methods in language acquisition. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of two dominant approaches: the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method and the Grammar-Translation Method (GTM) in improving English proficiency among secondary school students in Indonesia. Employing a quasi-experimental design, this research involved 120 students divided into two equal groups, each receiving instruction based on one of the approaches over a period of 12 weeks. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to measure students’ progress in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The results indicated that the CLT group significantly outperformed the GTM group, particularly in speaking and listening components, while the GTM group showed marginally better results in grammar and reading comprehension. The findings suggest that while both methods have merits, CLT offers a more balanced improvement in communicative competence. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on English pedagogy in EFL contexts and provides evidence-based recommendations for curriculum development in Indonesian schools.
