Abstract

Elderly individuals are a vulnerable group prone to mental health disorders, especially depression. Family support serves as a protective factor that can influence the psychological well-being of the elderly, yet its impact is often underexplored. This study aims to explore the meaning of family support in relation to depression among elderly individuals, particularly within the context of their daily lives. The study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Ten elderly informants experiencing mild to moderate depressive symptoms were selected through purposive sampling and interviewed in-depth. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's analysis method, which consists of seven stages: reading the transcripts, extracting significant statements, formulating meanings, grouping meanings into themes, creating a comprehensive description, describing the essence structure of the phenomenon, and validating with the participants. From the data analysis, four main themes emerged reflecting the elderly's experiences related to family support: (1) Emotional support as a mental strength for the elderly, (2) Family involvement in daily activities as a form of attention, (3) Barriers in intergenerational communication within the family, and (4) Feelings of loneliness due to lack of family interaction. Family support plays a crucial role in helping the elderly cope with depression. The physical presence of family, empathetic communication, and active involvement in daily activities can provide a sense of security and being valued for the elderly. This study emphasizes the importance of family-based interventions for the prevention and management of depression in the elderly.

Sampling consists of all parents who have children aged 3-6 years and have younger siblings with an age difference of under 3 years. The research instrument used a questionnaire sheet with data processing editing, coding, scoring, tabulating and analysis using the Chi-Square test and to assess frequency statistical data using a computer program, SPSS 2022. The results showed that most of the respondents, namely 19 people (55.9%), most children did not experience sibling rivalry. Most of the respondents, namely 17 people (50.0%), the development of pre-school children is doubtful. Based on the Chi-Square test, the significant value (p) = 0.000 α < 0.05, so Hi is accepted. The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between the incidence of sibling rivalry and the development of pre-school children at Ratu Alam Atakkae Kindergarten.

Abstract

Social interaction skills are an essential aspect of preschool children's development, as they support children's ability to adapt, communicate, and cooperate with their surroundings. One factor presumed to influence these skills is parenting style. This study aimed to examine the relationship between parenting style and the social interaction skills of preschool children at TK PGRI 1 Keera. This quantitative study employed a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 58 preschool children, with a sample of 37 respondents selected using probability sampling through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a parenting style questionnaire and a children's social interaction skills questionnaire. The relationship between variables was analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test with a significance level of 0.05. Most parents applied a democratic parenting style (31 respondents; 83.8%). The majority of children demonstrated a moderate level of social interaction skills (30 respondents; 81.1%). Statistical analysis yielded a p-value of 0.117 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant relationship between parenting style and preschool children's social interaction skills. Parenting style was not significantly associated with the social interaction skills of preschool children at TK PGRI 1 Keera. These findings suggest that children's social interaction skills may be influenced by other factors, such as the school environment, peer interactions, and children's daily social experiences.

Abstract

Adolescent smoking remains a major public health concern in Indonesia, including in Keera District, Wajo Regency. Smoking behavior among adolescents is influenced by various factors, one of which is family communication patterns. Ineffective family communication may weaken parental supervision and reduce openness between parents and adolescents, thereby increasing the risk of smoking behavior. This study aimed to examine the relationship between family communication patterns and smoking behavior among adolescents in Keera District, Wajo Regency. This study employed a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 951 adolescents, and a sample of 90 respondents was selected using an accidental sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation test. The results showed that the majority of respondents had poor family communication patterns (87.8%) and were classified as heavy smokers (55.6%). Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between family communication patterns and adolescent smoking behavior (p = 0.035; r = −0.223). The negative correlation coefficient indicates that better family communication is associated with a lower likelihood of smoking among adolescents, although the strength of the relationship was weak. In conclusion, family communication patterns are significantly associated with smoking behavior among adolescents in Keera District, Wajo Regency. Strengthening open, supportive, and consistent family communication may serve as an effective strategy for preventing adolescent smoking, while also considering other contributing factors such as peer influence, the social environment, and media exposure.
