Abstract

Introduction: The increasing life expectancy in Indonesia, including  Denpasar City, has led to a growing elderly population. Older adults are vulnerable to various health problems, including tooth loss. This condition can impair chewing function, affect facial aesthetics, and ultimately reduce the quality of life. Dentures are a commonly used solution; however, their use among the elderly remains low. Therefore, it is important to explore the factors influencing the interest in using dentures. Material and Methods: This study was a qualitative research including a descriptive exploratory approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 20 older adults from five community units (banjar) in Denpasar City, selected purposively. Data were analyzed thematically using the Hanlon method, which considers the magnitude of the problem,  seriousness of the impact,  effectiveness of the solution, and feasibility of implementation, to assess and prioritize the factors contributing to the low interest in denture use. Results and Discussions: Six main themes were identified as influencing the low interest in denture use: passive acceptance of tooth loss as a natural part of aging, limited access due to lack of transportation or assistance, (3) low knowledge about the benefits of dentures, discomfort during use, perception of high costs, and ignorance of the Indonesian health insurance coverage. Conclusion: The low interest in denture use among older adults is influenced by psychosocial, structural, and educational factors. Educational interventions, provision of mobile health services, and culturally sensitive, community-based approaches are needed to improve denture utilization among older adults.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral health education may improve maternal knowledge, while baseline oral health status reflects existing treatment needs. This study evaluated changes in oral health knowledge following oral health education according to educational level and described baseline Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) status among pregnant women. Materials and Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest study was conducted among 15 pregnant women attending Puskesmas IV South Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, in November 2025. Oral health knowledge was assessed using a researcher-developed 15-item multiple-choice questionnaire administered before and immediately after the intervention. The Shapiro–Wilk test was used to assess normality, and differences between pretest and posttest knowledge scores were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Effect size was calculated using r = Z/√N. Results and Discussion: The median knowledge score increased from 73.3 before the intervention to 80.0 after oral health education. The improvement was statistically significant (Z = −2.81; p = 0.005) with a large effect size (r = 0.73). Participants with higher educational attainment achieved higher posttest knowledge scores. The mean DMFT score was 4.4 ± 1.7, with untreated decayed teeth representing the predominant component. Conclusion: Oral health education significantly improved pregnant women's oral health knowledge. However, untreated dental caries remained prevalent, highlighting the importance of integrating oral health education with routine oral screening and preventive dental care within antenatal healthcare services. Abstract

The caries in primary teeth is assessed by def-t index. One factor thought to be associated with caries status is gender, although findings on this are inconsis-tent. This study employed an observational design with a descriptive quantitative approach. A total of 31 pupils from Class 1B at Saraswati 1 Primary School in Denpasar were selected using purposive sampling. A direct examination of the pupils’ primary teeth was carried out by dental health personnel using the 2018 Riskesdas Dental Health Survey form. The caries status among boys was predominantly in the very low category, whereas among girls, the distribu-tion of caries status was more even. The Spearman’s test showed a correlation coefficient of r=0.225 with p=0.224 (p>0.05), indicating no significant associa-tion between gender and caries status based on the def-t index. It was concluded that there was no significant association between gender and the def-t In-dex category among Year 1B pupils at Saraswati 1 Primary School in Denpasar. The more dominant factors included children’s health behaviours. Further-more, parents’ roles in oral health literacy, supervision of toothbrushing, as well as environmental and economic factors were found to be more decisive in determining children’s caries scores than gender.
