Abstract

Pragmatic competence is very important in oral communication because the learners must know not only the grammar but also how to speak appropriately. However, many EFL learners are still weak in this aspect. This study discusses the pragmatic competence of EFL learners in oral communication. The study used a descriptive qualitative method supported by quantitative data. The data were collected through a pragmatic judgment test, oral role-play, interviews, and observation. The result shows that the pragmatic competence of the learners is in the moderate category. The learners are good in apology and greeting but still weak in refusal and disagreement, and they also use direct expressions too often. It is suggested that pragmatics should be taught in the speaking class.

Abstract

Academic writing is very important for the students in higher education, but many students still find it difficult especially when they must write in English. This study discusses the difficulties of the students in academic writing. The study used a qualitative case study method. The data were collected from the essays of the students, interviews, and also documents. The result shows that the students have difficulties in grammar, vocabulary, and also in arranging the argument and using the references. Besides that, the students also feel that the feedback from the lecturer is not enough. Therefore the lecturers should teach academic writing more explicitly and give more feedback to the students.

Abstract

Nowadays the students in primary school already use handphone and laptop, so the teacher can also make the material in digital form. But many e-modules are only the textbook that is changed into PDF, so the students just read and there is no interaction. This article discusses the development of interactive e-modules for language learning in primary education. The method used is literature review from books and journals about e-module, multimedia, and young learners. The result shows that the e-module must have clear objective, interesting picture and audio, exercise with feedback, and also must be easy to be opened by the students. If the e-module is only interesting but not connected with the language objective, the students will only play and not learn. Therefore the teacher and the developer must design the e-module carefully by using the ADDIE model.
