Abstract

COVID-19 survivors with chronic illnesses face layered physical, emotional, and spiritual pressures. In a religious society like Indonesia, religiosity plays a vital role in fostering long-term psychological resilience. This study aims to (1) explore resilience patterns based on Ann S. Masten’s Ordinary Magic theory, (2) analyze the role of religiosity in activating adaptive strengths during grief from chronic illness, and (3) examine its relevance for developing school-based psychoeducational services. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected purposively from six survivors with comorbidities and two supporting informants. In-depth interviews and observations were analyzed thematically using MAXQDA. Findings revealed four key resilience patterns: stress resistance, recovery, normalization, and posttraumatic growth, all significantly shaped by religiosity. Practices such as prayer, spiritual reflection, and finding transcendental meaning helped individuals manage emotions, sustain hope, and build inner strength. These insights highlight the potential for integrating spiritual values into psychoeducational programs to support student resilience. Further research is encouraged to develop religiosity-based preventive interventions tailored to educational settings.

Abstract

Self-compassion has become a significant focus in counseling psychology; however, evidence regarding its contribution to counselors' professional well-being remains fragmented. This study examines developmental trends of self-compassion research and its effects on counselors within counseling services through a Systematic Literature Review guided by the PRISMA framework. Searches in the Scopus database identified 130 studies. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied based on publication year, document type, language, accessibility, population, and subject matter, yielding 13 eligible articles. To enhance the credibility of the review, the methodological quality of the included studies was assessed by examining the clarity of research objectives, research significance, methodological rigor, conceptual precision, and transparency of findings. Overall, the included studies demonstrated satisfactory methodological quality. The synthesis indicates that self-compassion helps counselors manage compassion fatigue, strengthens resilience, enhances therapeutic relationships, promotes psychological well-being, and supports their mental health. Mindfulness-based interventions and self-compassion programs appear effective for strengthening resilience and improving the overall quality of counseling services. Based on the synthesized evidence, structured self-compassion training is recommended for integration into counselor education and ongoing professional development, encouraging brief practices within supervision, and aligning institutional policies to sustain counselors’ well-being. The review highlights self-compassion as a feasible strategy for maintaining effective counseling practice and recommends future studies employing standardized methodological quality appraisal procedures, culturally responsive interventions, and longitudinal designs to strengthen the evidence base.
