Abstract

In the current era of digital information and communication media, the Bayan indigenous people still firmly maintain the existence of traditional communication. The Bayan indigenous people are part of the Sasak people who live on the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Traditional communication has an essential role in the social life of the community. Besides being able to bind relations between communities to be harmonious, it is also the identity of a society. In this regard, knowing how the Bayan indigenous community can maintain traditional communication in the digital media era is crucial. Data were collected by interview, observation, and documentation methods, with the resource persons being the village heads of Sukadana, Baturakit, and Bayan, as well as traditional leaders from the villages of Baturakit and Karang Bajo. The results show that the Bayan indigenous people continue to use digital media or the internet to add insight. However, the Bayan indigenous people also consistently maintain traditional communication. The still-functioning traditional institutions indicate this; still ongoing traditional rituals, including traditional rituals related to Islamic holidays, gawe urip rituals, namely rituals related to life, gawe pati rituals, namely traditional ceremonies related to death; and the functioning of customary awik-awik or customary law. The existence of the traditional communication of the Bayan indigenous people is the responsibility of the customs authorities, the Bayan indigenous people in general, and government policymakers. The factors that affect the durability of this traditional communication are: people's belief in the values of their ancestors that are still firmly held, strong characterizations of traditional stakeholders as opinion leaders, and customary sanctions are also reasons for indigenous peoples to maintain traditional values which are manifested in traditional communication.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perceptions of local journalists in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province, especially Lombok. This type of research is qualitative and the method used is phenomenology. The process of collecting research data was carried out through observation, and in-depth interviews. The researcher also conducted documentation and literature studies relevant to the research. The researcher analyzed the stages of organizing data, noting important points, describing meanings for informants, grouping statements into several units, developing descriptive text, detailing the experiences of informants more deeply through descriptions, and drawing conclusions. This research found that journalists who work in online media think that the print media industry still has a special niche of customers from the educated to government employees, but if they are not creative then print media will decrease. On the other hand, print media journalists feel that the print media industry will survive as long as regulations regarding local government advertising spending do not change. This regulation benefits print media because the value of their advertising partnership is much higher than online media. This research also found that print media journalists understand the condition of their company's dependence on local government and this relationship pattern is not sustainable. Meanwhile, online media journalists understand that their work culture in this industry demands more work while there is very little support for social and health insurance, especially for those who are contributing journalists.

Abstract

Introduction: Governmental responses to the pandemic vary by country. This study seeks to evaluate the Government's preliminary crisis rhetoric by employing a framing typology frequently utilised in Public Relations as reported in mass media across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. This study examines articles regarding government narratives published from January to March 2020 in Detik.com, Straitstimes.com, and Thestar.com. A total of 22.338 news reports about the pandemic were retrieved from the respective media. The three media was selected due to its national reach and readership. Methods: This paper employs qualitative-thematic and content analysis to analyze the materials collected from internet news sources. The study was conducted systematically, involving several steps. A thematic analysis was performed on the government messages to reveal governments’ initial crisis intersecting concept of crisis rhetoric and framing typology in PR. Findings: The Indonesian Government adopted the rhetorical appeal of ‘kairos’, ‘ethos’, and ‘pathos’ as means of persuasion to build the frame of choice and issues in the messages to the public. The Malaysian Government exhibited ‘ethos’ and ‘pathos’ appeal to build frame of responsibility and action in the messages carried out by the Government in the mass media. Meanwhile, the Singapore government uses the rhetorical appeal of ‘logos’ and ‘ethos’ in creating frame of action, responsibility, and situations that exist in the news covering government statements from Singapore. Originality: Studies linking framing with rhetoric are scarce, mostly framing analysis focusing more on the journalist activities in constructing the frame within the news.
