Abstract

This research analyzes the level of interviewees’ trustworthiness in giving information during the making of investigation reports in Situbondo Police Station. Searle’s theory of speech acts is used to analyze the data. The level of the interviewees’ trustworthiness is based on the information given by the police officers, which is integrated with the result of the illocutionary act analysis. This qualitative descriptive research produces deep descriptions of the utterances stated by interviewees. Taxonomic analysis proposed by Spreadly is used to classify the data based on the types of illocutionary acts found. Componential analysis is used to reveal the interrelationship between variables. The result of this research reveals that there is a strong relationship between an interviewees’ trustworthiness and kinds of illocutionary acts, and that assertive, which produces a large number of less trustworthy utterances, is the most frequently found illocutionary act.DOI: 10.24071/ijhs.2019.020205

Abstract

Abstract. This activity resolved one of the problems faced by Early Childhood Education (PAUD) teachers in Asembagus, the inability of PAUD teachers to pronounce English vocabulary taught to their students. For this reason, the English for Young Learners training focused primarily on checking and improving English pronunciation of PAUD teachers was held. This program lasted one month with three stages: preparation, training and evaluation. The purpose of the preparation stage was to establish communication with the partner, RA Munawarus Sholeh Mojosari, Asembagus. Second, the training stage took place over four days comprised of basic English vocabulary, EYL (English for Young Learners) learning media, learning methods, pronunciation, and technology utilization. The last was the evaluation stage where the organizers measured and reflected on the success of the project. Outputs generated from this activity were: (1) Increasing basic English vocabulary of PAUD teachers that was usually taught to the students; (2) Proper pronunciation of some basic English vocabulary of PAUD teachers; (3) Improved PAUD teacher skills in teaching English to early childhood learners; (4) Improved PAUD teacher skills in using a dictionary application to check the pronunciation of English words; and (5) Increasing Motivation of PAUD teachers in developing English language skills.Abstrak. Kegiatan ini menyelesaikan salah satu permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh guru Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini (PAUD) di Asembagus yaitu minimnya kemampuan guru PAUD dalam hal pelafalan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris untuk diajarkan pada anak didik mereka. Untuk itu, pelatihan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk anak usia dini (English for Young Learners) yang difokuskan terutama pada pengecekan dan perbaikan pelafalan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris yang dimiliki oleh guru PAUD dilakukan. Program ini dilaksanakan selama sebulan dengan tiga tahap, yaitu tahap persiapan, pelatihan, dan evaluasi. Tahap persiapan dilakukan untuk menjalin komunikasi dengan pihak mitra, yaitu RA. Munawarus Sholeh Mojosari, Asembagus. Kedua, tahap pelatihan yang dilakukan selama empat hari dengan pemberian materi berupa kosa kata dasar Bahasa Inggris, media pembelajaran EYL (English for Young Learners), metode pembelajaran, pelafalan (pronunciation), dan pemanfaatan teknologi. Yang terakhir yaitu evaluasi. Luaran yang dihasilkan dari kegiatan ini adalah: (1) Bertambahnya kosa kata dasar Bahasa Inggris guru PAUD yang biasa diajarkan pada anak didik; (2) Pelafalan beberapa kosa kata dasar Bahasa Inggris guru PAUD yang benar; (3) Keterampilan guru PAUD dalam mengajarkan bahasa Inggris kepada anak usia dini; (4) Keterampilan guru PAUD dalam menggunakan aplikasi kamus dalam mengecek pengucapan kata-kata Bahasa Inggris; dan (5) Motivasi guru PAUD dalam mengembangkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang meningkat.

Abstract

Because of the advanced development of technology, people can now interact with others easily by any means of communication, such as text messages and telephone calls. One of the most popular applications that has messaging and call features is WhatsApp. WhatsApp messaging feature is also used by the lecturers, students, and staff of English Department at Universitas Abdurachman Saleh Situbondo for sharing both academic and non-academic information. The group members communicate using Indonesian, English, and the mix of the two. This current research analyzed the types of code mixing used by the members of the group and the reasons why they used code mixing. The data of this descriptive qualitative research are the utterances containing code mixing made by the members of the group. Muysken’s theory was used to analyze the types of code mixing and Bhatia’s was used to study the reasons for using code mixing. The result of this research shows that insertion is the onl type of code mixing which appeared in the group, while situational factor is the most used reason why the code mixing occurred.

Abstract

This study analyze the messages that imply and how the author sends the messages in graphic novel The Hobbit. The data in this study are in the form of utterances and pictures that refer to the moral values also direct and indirect messages. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The method that the researcher used is library research. The data of this research are in the form of pictures and utterances. The steps of data collection are reading graphic novel The Hobbit, finding the messages in the form of utterances and pictures in every chapter in graphic novel The Hobbit, writing / noting down the utterances and pictures that imply a message. The steps of data analysis are doing data reduction by choosing the relevant messages, describing the messages found using Nurgiyantoro’s theory on messages (2007), describing how the author sends messages based on its types using Mahsuri’s theory (2015), concluding the data. From the data, the researcher found thirty four data for the messages. The messages are mostly about how to behave well and to have good atitude towards others. There are three data showing the messages are delivered in a direct way by the author, and there are thirty one data that shows indirect way.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the community service conducted at SMP Cendikia Insani on the introduction of forensic linguistics. The primary aim of this activity was to enhance students' understanding of language analysis in legal contexts, social media language ethics, and the legal consequences of unethical online behavior. Through materials covering fundamental forensic linguistics concepts, discussions on language ethics, and explanations of the Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE), students were introduced to essential principles of responsible and ethical communication. Interactive learning methods, including quizzes and case studies, were employed to encourage active student participation and deepen their understanding. The results indicate that students showed increased awareness and understanding of language ethics and the legal implications of online behavior. The high level of enthusiasm during Q&A sessions and discussions reflects the relevance and value of the content delivered. Support from Universitas Abdurachman Saleh Situbondo was crucial to the success of this initiative, reaffirming the shared commitment to holistic and relevant education for the digital generation.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini mengupayakan pemecahan permasalahan di bidang produksi yang merujuk pada tujuan untuk meningkatkan kunjungan wisatawan asing di objek wisata Kampung Kerapu. Permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh Kampung Kerapu Situbondo tersebut yaitu belum adanya petugas wisata di Kampung Kerapu yang memiliki kemampuan Bahasa Inggris untuk melayani wisatawan asing yang berkunjung ke objek wisata ini. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan sumber daya manusia yang terdapat di wisata Kampung Kerapu Situbondo, khususnya kemampuan untuk berkomunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, diadakanlah kegiatan pengabdian pelatihan English for Tourism dengan sasaran peserta petugas wisata Kampung Kerapu Situbondo. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan sebanyak delapan kali pertemuan, diawali dengan pre-test dan diakhiri dengan post-test. Hasil dari kegiatan ini, peserta pelatihan menjadi terbiasa berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris dan memiliki kepercayaan diri untuk mempraktekannya kepada wisatawan asing yang berkunjung ke Kampung Kerapu Situbondo.

Abstract

This research examines the evaluation of attitudes in 5 articles from Jakartapost.com regarding the electoral debate of presidential candidates. As a mass media outlet targeting readers both domestically and internationally, Jakartapost.com is required to maintain neutrality in reporting on presidential debates. Therefore, the research aims to understand the attitudes and political ideology of 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates reported by Jakartapost.com. The news was analyzed using the appraisal system proposed by Martin and White (2005), categorizing attitudes into affect, judgment, and appreciation. This research utilized qualitative methods with embedded case study and Spradley’s analysis to identify cultural patterns and themes within the data. The results showed that attitudes consisted of 39.7% negative and 24.6% positive judgments, 16.4% negative and 8.2% positive appreciations, and 9.6% negative and 1.4% positive affects. The appraisal system can identify political ideologies of the three presidential candidates. Anis Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo express conflicting attitudes towards the current government, indicating their role as opposition and socialist populism, while Prabowo Subianto aligns himself with the current government known as technocratic populism. Journalists tend to assess Prabowo more positively compared to other candidates, suggesting a bias towards supporting him in the 2024 election.
