Abstract

The use of effective sentences in scientific writing is essential for conveying ideas clearly and systematically. However, ineffective sentences are still frequently found in undergraduate thesis writing, reducing clarity and coherence. This study aimed to describe the use of effective sentences, identify dominant types of ineffective sentences, and analyze factors contributing to sentence ineffectiveness in theses written by Biology Education students at Universitas Negeri Medan. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were taken from four undergraduate theses and collected through documentation and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using content analysis involving data reduction, classification, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed 24 ineffective sentences categorized into five types: word economy, structural balance, idea coherence, logical language use, and parallelism. Word economy was the most dominant 41.7%, while parallelism was the least frequent 4.2%. These findings indicate that students still need improvement in applying effective sentence principles in academic writing. Therefore, systematic language guidance and academic writing supervision are needed to improve students’ ability to produce clearer and more effective scientific writing.

Abstract

Rubiaceae is one of the flowering plant families with high species diversity and wide distribution in tropical and subtropical regions. However, comprehensive studies discussing the morphological and anatomical characteristics of Rubiaceae are still limited. This study aimed to examine the general morphological characteristics, anatomical features, adaptive functions, and potential uses of Rubiaceae based on literature studies. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a literature study approach using scientific journals, books, and relevant academic references as data sources. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by comparing and classifying information regarding stem, leaf, flower, fruit, and anatomical characteristics of several Rubiaceae species. The results showed that Rubiaceae generally possesses opposite single leaves with stipules, woody stems, compound flowers with diverse colors, and varied fruit forms. Anatomical characteristics such as epidermal structure, stomata, trichomes, and pollen morphology also support the identification and classification of this family. Morphological variation among species reflects adaptation to environmental conditions and habitat diversity. In addition, many Rubiaceae species have important economic and ethnobotanical values as medicinal plants, ornamental plants, food sources, and industrial materials. Therefore, the study of Rubiaceae morphology provides important scientific information that can support botanical studies, taxonomy, conservation, education, and sustainable utilization of plant resources.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze mitotic cell division activity in onion (Allium cepa L.) root tips soaked in salt water, detergent wastewater, and plain water. The research employed an experimental method with a descriptive approach. Onion bulbs were soaked for 48 hours, and the root tips were prepared using the squash method with acetocarmine or aceto-orcein staining before being observed under a light microscope. Observations focused on the occurrence of mitotic phases and root growth in each treatment. The results showed that the soaking media affected onion root growth differently. The plain water treatment produced approximately two short roots, allowing microscopic preparation, although mitotic phases could not be clearly identified due to suboptimal slide quality. The salt water treatment produced no root growth, likely due to plasmolysis caused by high osmotic pressure. Meanwhile, the detergent wastewater treatment caused the most severe tissue damage, indicated by discoloration and softening of tissues due to membrane disruption by surfactants. Consequently, microscopic observations could not be conducted in both treatments. It can be concluded that the quality of the soaking medium influences root growth and mitotic activity in Allium cepa L.
