Abstract

Duck eggs are more difficult to hatch than chicken eggs as the duck does not incubate their eggs and the duck eggs need more time to hatch (in 28 days). This study aimed to determine the sex ratio of DOD (Day Old Duck) from two different breeds, namely cihateup from Tasikmalaya West Java and alabio from South Kalimantan. This experiment was conducted from May 2012 to July 2012 at the Hatchery Laboratory of Animal Science Faculty of IPB. 500 eggs consist of 300 alabio eggs and 200 cihateup eggs were used in this experiment. Temperature, humidity, egg weight, egg shape index, hatching weight and mortality were measured. The data of egg weight, egg shape index, and hatching weight were analyzed using t-test, the data of sex ratio DOD were analyzed using chi-square test. The result showed that there were no significant difference between egg weight and egg shape index on sex ratio. Sex ratio of male and female cihateup ducks was equal  (50%:50%), however the sex ratio of alabio ducks was different (32%:68%). Mortality rate was affected by sex of duck (P<0.05). The Higher mortality was occured at early (day 0-7) and late (day>25) hatching period.

Abstract

Merawang and arab are 2 Indonesia local chicken that have potensial to be developed.  Crossing of merawang and arab chicken aims to improve genetic quality of local chickens.    G1 MA  as results interse of MA is expected to be developed as local chicken producing eggs. To produce superior laying hens, growth of ages 1 to 12 weeks is very important because starter ang grower phasethis is the critical phase to produce superior laying hens. This study aimed to examine the growth of G1 MA as a result of MA interse crosses compared to MA (Go) aged 1-12 weeks. The number of DOC of G1 MA chicken is 98 birds and DOC of Go MA chicken 1s 147 birds. The 100% commercial feed for broiler starter phase until the age of 3 weeks and age > 3 weeks began to be mixed with rice bran gradually so that the age > 5-12 weeks was given a mixture of 60% commercial feed and 40% rice bran. The variables measured were body weight, consumption, feed conversion, and mortality. The data obtained were t test. The results of the weight of the DOC G1. The results of the weight of the DOC G1 MA were significantly heavier than the MA, but with no different growth rates, the average age of 12 weeks G1 MA and MA in the same sex were not different, G1 MA and Go MA male chicken were 1099 and 1087 g respectivelly, while females were 976 and 970 g, feed consumption ranging 3 759 - 3 812 g, and feed conversion ranging from 3.67 to 4.11. The growth Conclusion, G1 MA and Go MA had composition genetic 50% merawang chicken and 50% arab chicken had  same growth performance.

Abstract

The use of KMnO4 and formalin 40% for fumigation of hatching machine and hatching eggs has potential hazards to safety and health. Some previous studies have shown that banana pseudostem extract can act as an antimicrobial. This study aimed to examine the use of ambon banana pseudostem extract (Musa paradisiaca var. Sapientum) with concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30% as eggshell sanitizer to the hatchability of local duck eggs. The results showed eggs hatchability that use of 10% banana pseudostem extract still lower than eggs hatchability that use fumigation. The higher concentration of banana pseudostem extract can reduce the hatchability. Therefore, it is necessary to try experiment use banana peseudostem extract with concentration lower than 10%.

Abstract

The egg production of local chiken can be increased by crossing of arab and merawang chicken. This study aimed to observed egg production performances of crossing between merawang x merawangarab (M-MA), merawangarab x merawang (MA-M), merawangarab x merawangarab (MA-MA), arabmerawang x arabmerawang (AM-AM), merawangarab x arab (MA-A), and arab x merawangarab (A-MA). Parameters in this study were egg weight, egg shape index, hen day production and feed conversion. The result showed that the egg weight of MA-M chicken was significantly greater (P<0.05). than M-MA, MA-MA, AM-AM, MA-A, and A-MA chicken. The MA-A egg index was significantly larger (P<0.05) than other crossing. Hen day production of M-MA chicken was significantly greater (P<0.05) and feed convertion was significantly efficient (P<0.05) than other crossing. MA hens had better production than other hens.

Abstract

The overall transportation process is a gripping activity for goats and sheep. Goats and sheep canexperience stress as reflected by indicators of weight loss, physiological responses and blood metabolites. The use of sheep goat and sheep conveyance according to the Regulation of the Minister of Agricultureof the Republic of Indonesia number 114/Permentan/PD.410/9/2014concerning the transportation ofsacrificial animals, vehicles can be designed for a maximum of two decks. Farmers use pick-up vehiclesarranged in three levels to reduce transportation costs. This study uses two triple-deck pick-up vehiclesfor 60 goats and 60 sheep. Each deck is filled with 20 animals and five animals are taken as samples. The design used by using a randomized block design (RBD), the position of the deck (deck 1, deck 2,deck 3) as a factor, and body weight as groups. The evaluation results of goat and sheep transportationwith a distance of ± 674 km (± 16 hours of travel) shows that deck has no significant effect (P>0.05) onthe weight loss of goat and sheep also did not affect (P>0.05) on the physiological response and bloodmetabolites. The stress level of goats and sheep transported is not affected by deck position.

Abstract

Transportation plays important factor in broiler industry. Whole transportation process from loading tounloading can cause stress to broilers. The duration of the trip can affect oxidative stress, physiologicaland performance of broiler. This study aim to evaluate the effects of different transportation durationson oxidative stress, physiological responses and performance of broilers. Transportation from farm toslaughterhouse using a truck with a capacity of 144 crates. There were two durations treatment in this study,180 and 240 mins. Variables measured in this study were oxidative stress indicators (malondialdehyde/MDA content and catalase enzyme activity), physiological responses (rectal temperature and heterophilelymphocytes (HL) ratio), and performance represented by weight loss percentage. Normality test wasdone before T Test. Data analyzed using T Test independent which compared data between before andafter transportation. T Test dependent which compared data between short and long duration. The resultshowed that duration of transportation significantly affects on decrease liver and thigh catalase enzymeactivity, decrease malondialdehyde value on liver, decrease HL ratio after transportation, differenceson rectal temperature and weightloss. Long transportation duration resulted the lowest liver and thighcatalase enzymes activity (0.097±0.023 and 0.088±0.014 U/mL). It can be concluded that the long durationtransportation catalase enzyme activity reduce MDA value and affected performance indicator
