Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 5E learning cycle instructional model using socioscientific issues (SSI) learning context on students’ critical thinking skills of acid-base. This study used quasi-experimental posttest only control group design. The sample consisted of three classes, which were XI MIA-4class (n = 32) that learned using 5E LC model, XI MIA-5 class (n = 33) that learned using 5E LC+SSI, and XI MIA-6 class (n = 32) that learned using conventional method. The samples were choosen by convenience sampling technique. The test instrument consisted of 15 multiple choice items which were valid and reliable (r = 0.806). The data were analyzed using one way ANOVA test and LSD posthoc test. The results of this study indicated that the students who learned using 5E LC+SSI model showed greater levels of critical thinking skills (  = 74,95) than both the student who learned using 5E LC model (  = 74,17) and  the student who learned using conventional method (  = 68,96). Based on statistics analysis, there was significant differences on students’ critical thinkings between students taught using conventional method and students taught either using 5E LC+SSI model and 5E LC model. However,  there was no significant differences on students’ critical thinking skills between students taught using 5E LC+SSI model and the students taught using 5E LC model.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the diversity of the complete sequence of D-loop mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in Bali and Sumba Ongole (SO) cattlebreeds. A total of 24 blood samples were collected from Bali cattle (19 heads) and SO cattle (5 heads), and were extracted and then analyzed to obtain the sequence of D-loop mt DNA.Multiple alignments of the whole sequence of D-loop mtDNA were determined using clustal W. Genetic distance was calculated using a p-distance method, while the genetic tree was constructed using neighbor-joining (NJ) based on MEGA 6. Haplotype number, haplotype diversity (Hd) and nucleotide diversity (Pi) were analyzed using DnaSP version 6. As a result, the sequence of D-loop mtDNA in Bali cattle (921-1119 bp) and SO cattle (913 bp) was reported to have 8 and 4 haplotypes. Hd and Pi of Bali cattle reached 0.625±0.139 and 0.0266±0.0145, respectively, which wwere different from that of SO cattle, namely 0.900±0.1610 and 0.0064±0.0015, respectively. Specifically, we found 22 bp-repetitive nucleotide in Bali cattle, existing 3-9 times with a length of 66-198 bp present in D-loop mtDNA. This unique feature did not exist in SO cattle. Genetic distance and genetic tree determined according to sequence in hypervariability (HV-1) region of D-loop mtDNA (166 bp) resulted in satisfied separation, successfully classifying Bos javanicus, Bos indicus, and Bos taurus cluster.

Abstract

Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is a key enzyme that plays in metabolism and transport lipoprotein andtherefore has an influence on blood triglyceride levels. LPL controls triacylglycerol partitioning betweenadipose tissue and muscle that increases fat storage or provides energy in the form of fatty acids formuscle growth. The research was aimed to explore Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms of LPL gene andto associate SNP with marbling quality. A total of 66 genomic DNAs consisted of sumatera thin-tail edsheep (50 heads) and garut sheep (16 heads) were used in this study. Polymerase Chain Reaction wasused to amplify genomic DNA and direct sequencing method was to identify polymorphism sequences. The sequences were analyzed with Bio Edit and MEGA 5.2. The BLAST sequence was obtained fromgene bank X.68308.1. The association between the genotype and marbling quality was analyze by oneway ANOVA and further between mean differences were tested using least sgnificant difference. Theresults showed that 3 novel SNPs i.e. insertion g.26>C; insertion g.27> G and c.192T>C on garut sheepand a SNP insertion g.26>C/G on sumatera thin-tail ed sheep. The diversity of LPL gene at c.192T>Cwas associated with heneicosanoic acid, whereas TT genotype (0.04%) was higher than CC (0.03%) andCT (0.02%).

Abstract

Guided inquiry learning has improved scientific literacy skills in various studies. This fact, however, contradicts new findings from the 2015 PISA survey. The research aims to assess inquiry-based OE3C learning methodologies that incorporate local socioscientific issues (SSI) to improve students’ scientific literacy. The research method used quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate the planned strategy for teaching thermochemistry and rate reactions. The local SSI-based OE3C was used in a sixteen 90-minute lesson with 72 eleventh-grade students (experimental group) at an Indonesian public high school. A control group of 68 students from the same school was taught using guided inquiry learning. The experimental group received a 17-item questionnaire on students’ opinions of the instructional process using the OE3C based on local SSI and a 24-item scientific literacy test (Cronbach alpha = 0.717) from pretest and posttest. The control group also received the scientific literacy tests from pretest and posttest. The finding shows that OE3C learning based on SSI effectively enhances students’ scientific literacy skills. These findings are consistent with the results of the student perception questionnaire, which are supported by semi-structured interview findings 7.78% of students are highly pleased to learn using local SSI-based OE3C learning, and 95.83% of students think that learning to use local SSI-based OE3C learning steps helps them gain a better knowledge of the material. The findings of this study suggest that local SSI should be integrated into chemistry classes to help students build scientific literacy skills.

Abstract

Physics science differs from other educational programs. As a natural science subject, this study program has many mathematical formulas, complex scientific laws, theorems, and scientific postulates. This study program needs creative thinking skills since physics learning is related to creativity in solving scientific problems. CPS (Creative Problem Solving) and flipped classrooms are some efforts to increase creative thinking skills. In Indonesia, COVID-19 is the main reason for conducting online learning. However, there is no supporting information about the effectiveness of CPS and flipped classrooms as methods for online physics learning in university. Thus, this study aims to identify the effectiveness of CPS–flipped classrooms assisted by videos in enhancing university students' creative thinking skills for online learning. The study participants were university students from the Physics Education Study Program (population = 66 students, random cluster sampling for the sampling method) of Mataram University. They were divided into the control and experimental or treatment groups. This study used a pre-test and post-test group design (seven description questions). All questions were validated and reliable. All data were analyzed using an N-gain score and t-test. The results show that the N-gain score is in the medium zone. The data were normally and homogeneously distributed. The analysis result using the t-test shows that the addition of flipped classrooms is more effective than the control group (CPS only). CPS-flipped classroom performs better than CPS, proving the ability of flipped classrooms as the alternative method in online learning.
