Abstract

Language plays an important role in the social communication of elementary school students and is influenced by the relationship between language, society, and the environment within an ecological language perspective. This study aims to examine the use of language in students’ social communication as well as the factors that influence it. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design conducted in an elementary school with diverse social backgrounds. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using an interactive analysis model. The findings show that students use formal Indonesian in learning contexts, while in non-formal interactions they tend to use regional languages, mixed languages, and slang influenced by family environment, peers, and digital media. Students also demonstrate the ability to adjust their language use according to the communication context. These findings emphasize that students’ language use is dynamic and contextual as part of the language ecosystem. Therefore, language learning in elementary schools needs to be conducted in a contextual and adaptive manner by considering linguistic diversity as a potential to support students’ communication skills.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the design of Indonesian language learning texts in elementary schools. The background of this research is based on the importance of learning texts as the main means of developing students' literacy skills, as well as the still-existing various issues such as overly complex texts, lack of contextual relevance, difficult language use, and lack of appeal. This research uses a qualitative approach with the library research method. Data were obtained from various relevant scientific literature sources, such as books, journal articles, and official documents published in the last ten years. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation studies, while data analysis used content analysis. The research results show that the design of learning texts must pay attention to six main principles, namely alignment with student characteristics, content integration, language clarity, contextuality, attractiveness, and literacy orientation. In addition, several issues were found that could hinder the learning process. Therefore, a systematic design process is needed, including needs analysis, text type determination, content organization, language development, and evaluation. Thus, proper text design can enhance the quality of Indonesian language learning and the literacy skills of elementary school students.
