Abstract

The Sumatran elephant, active both day and night, is more active two hours before sunset and after dawn. In a matriarchal system, a dominant female leads the herd, with mothers and allomothers (non-nursing females) caring for the calves. This study, conducted at Gunung Leuser National Park, Tangkahan Resort, used CCTV to observe behavior like grooming, feeding, playing, and resting for 12 hours each night. Over 84 hours of observation, 5639 data points were recorded for adults and 5117 for calves, totaling 5040 minutes. Key nighttime activities included grooming (adults: 36.5%, calves: 22.07%), feeding (adults: 33.71%, calves: 24.5%), and playing (calves: 11.8%, adults: 5.24%). The study showed strong mother-calf bonds, with mothers actively protecting and teaching their young. These findings emphasize the mother’s role in the calf's development during nighttime.

Abstract

Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL) in Bahorok Research Station in Bahorok Sub-district, Langkat District, is a very important location for this work. The hilly terrain of the area provides a beautiful landscape and varied flora and fauna with the main attraction being the corpse flower (Amorphophallus sp). With a preserved natural environment and unique ecological features, this research station allows other parties to participate in protecting the area in various conservation campaign, one of which is the installation/establishment of conservation information boards. Conservation information boards can raise public awareness about the importance of protecting forests and their natural environment. Information on ecosystems, flora, fauna, management, and the importance of conservation can be conveyed through these information boards. Information boards are widely used as an educational tool for local communities and visitors to the forest at the research station. They can learn about forest ecology, the negative impacts of deforestation, and sustainable ways of utilizing forest resources. They can learn about forest ecology, the negative impacts of deforestation, and sustainable ways of utilizing forest resources. Information boards can also be used to invite community participation in conservation efforts, which is expected to improve the quality of knowledge and understanding of conservation areas for communities, researchers, and tourists. Therefore, the installation/establishment of conservation information boards needs to be carried out at Bahorok Research Station, Batu Katak as one of the campaign and solutions to maintain the natural conditions in the forest and river.

Abstract

Abstract

The interaction between the local community and orangutans is often perceived as mere conflict. Here, we delve into the intricacies of the local perceptions of orangutans by employing semi-structured interviews as a part of an ethnoprimatological approach. Our focus is on the Tangkahan ecotourism area, the Leuser ecosystem, Indonesia. Respondents were selected through convenience sampling. There are 16 respondents, the majority is Batak Karo ethnicity. Our findings reveal a complex and ambiguous local perception towards orangutans, encompassing both positive and negative aspects. In some cases, orangutans are perceived as pests to durian crops and potentially dangerous. In other cases, orangutans are also perceived as human resemble, attractions for tourism, and deserving of protection. We also found some folklore tells that orangutans are human relatives. The positive values of orangutans are likely influenced by ecotourism activities that actively involve the local community in management and development efforts.

Abstract

Halaban Monitoring Post, Sei Betung Resort, Gunung Leuser National Park is a rehabilitated forest restoration location since 2017 after previously being diversified from oil palm land. The location has currently become a habitat for various types of animals, including bats. The identification of bat species at the Halaban Monitoring Post is conducted to assess the presence of fauna, with important ecological roles in pollination. Identification was conducted using mist nets installed at five observation points. Our observations showed that 87 individuals of Microchiroptera family bats were found, belonging to 4 species: Cynopterus brachyotis (38 individuals), Cynopterus minutus (15 individuals), Glischropus tylopus (1 individual), Hipposideros cervinus (33 individuals). Further analysis showed Shannon-Wiener diversity index ranges from 0.0 to 0.94 and Margalef species richness index ranges from 0.0 to 0.69. Bat abundance tends to be evenly distributed with an evenness index of 0.0 to 1.35. There is a dominant species at one of the locations with a dominance index value of 0.85.

Abstract

Kedukang fish (Hexanematichthys sagor) is a consumable fish that is widely caught by fishermen and the community. Kedukang fishing is carried out every day in the Percut River, resulting in a decline in its population. This study aims to analyze the population by looking at density, sex ratio, growth pattern, gonad maturity level, gonad maturity index and fecundity of kedukang fish and analyze the relationship between physical-chemical factors of waters with population density of Kedukang fish. Samples were taken using purposive sampling method at 3 observation stations with 2 repetitions. Fish samples were taken using a net fishing gear installed at low tide and lifted at high tide. The results showed that the population density of kedukang fish in Percut River was low ranging from 0.048-0.123 ind/m2. The sex ratio kedukang fish at each observation station has an average of 1:0.5. The growth pattern of fish is allometric negative. The frequency distribution of fish length ranged from 21.5-47.9 cm. The greatest number of fish caught had a length range of 30.3-34.7 cm as many as 9 fish. The level of gonad maturity kedukang fish is dominated by TKG V. The average gonad maturity index of female kedukang fish is highest at the TPI location which is 20.729% and the highest fecundity at station II which is 4622.6. The relationship between the density of the kedukang fish population is very strong and positively correlated with DO, light intensity and nitrate. The population density of kedukang fish was strongly and negatively correlated with pH and phosphate.
