Abstract

This research aims to analyze the social, economic and institutional aspects of farmers contributing to the restoration of cocoa agribusiness in Lilirilau District. Apart from that, this research also aims to determine the effect of cocoa agribusiness restoration on increasing the productivity of cocoa farming in Lilirilau District, Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi. Research uses quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative analysis used in this research is SEM analysis with Smart PLS 4.0, while the qualitative analysis uses qualitative descriptive data analysis. The influence of the social aspect obtained a path coefficient of (t = 0.415, p = 0.679 > 0.05) which means it does not have a positive and significant influence on the restoration of cocoa agribusiness. Then, the economic aspect obtained a path coefficient of (t = 6.334, p = 0.000 < 0 .05) which means that it has a positive and significant influence on the restoration of cocoa agribusiness as well as institutional aspects. The path coefficients obtained are (t = 0.431, p = 0.667 > 0.05) which means that it does not have a positive and significant influence on the restoration of cocoa agribusiness and agribusiness restoration is obtained. path coefficients of (t = 7.333, p = 0.000 > 0.05) which means it has a positive and significant influence on increasing the productivity of cocoa farming in Lilirilau District, Soppeng Regency.

Abstract

Cocoa in Indonesia nowadays faces some problems including in West Sulawesi which decreased the quality and quantity of cocoa bean. To enhance sustainability through high-quality cocoa production due to the supply of global market demand, it is important to elaborate a collaborative model between two-partner or more.  As a purpose, this study focuses to measure the collaborative model between local cocoa farmers and Swisscontact through the Sustainable Cocoa Production Program (SCPP) in economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Primary data were collected by random sampling of 269 local cocoa farmers at the center of the Sustainable Cocoa Production Program (SCPP). Data were formulated using a scatterplot diagram, pearson correlation, multiple regression, and confirmatory factor analysis through the indicator in economic, environmental, and social dimensions. This paper provides a model of collaboration in which it bargains for stakeholders such as government both local and national, other policymakers, and private sectors to apply for sustainability programs in cocoa production. This model specifically showed a fit and good relationship between two partners as well as a good level of acceptance for the sustainable cocoa production program. Therefore, the origin found that collaboration would be a sophisticated model to be applied to the local cocoa farmers due to increasing their income, reducing the negative impact of environment and improving the quality standard of life.

Abstract

The rapid population growth in the region has led to challenges in managing household waste. Local governments must consider waste treatment infrastructure and landfill space availability when providing services. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the quality of services in household waste management in Sinjai District, Indonesia. Methodology and results: This study employs a mixed-method analysis utilizing the Delphi and SERVQUAL techniques. The research was conducted in Sinjai District, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, with a sample size of 397 respondents. The findings indicate that waste management within the Tondong landfill service coverage area in Sinjai Regency is relatively effective in reducing waste generation. According to the SERVQUAL analysis, apart from the tangible dimension, all other dimensions exhibit a negative GAP score, highlighting the need for improvements in each area. Conclusions, Significance, and impact of The Study: Waste management in Sinjai District, particularly in terms of composting and waste bank initiatives, faces major challenges in infrastructure, technology, and public awareness. Landfilling and composting methods are widely applied, but their efficiency needs to be improved. In the system, collection and transportation remain constrained by limited resources, while recycling requires community participation supported by education and wider access to recycling facilities. An integrated approach, involving the government, community, and private sector, is needed in Sinjai Regency to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of waste management.

Abstract

Abstract. Paays VG, Munizu M, Arsal A. 2026. Value chain and nutmeg farmers’ welfare in Morella, Central Maluku, Indonesia. Asian J Agric 10 (1): g100121. https://doi.org/10.13057/asianjagric/g100121. Nutmeg is one of Indonesia’s high-value plantation commodities and plays an important role in supporting rural livelihoods. However, despite its economic potential, many smallholder nutmeg farmers still experience limited welfare improvements due to weak integration within traditional value chain systems. In many producing areas, farmers face constraints such as limited market access, price uncertainty, low bargaining power, and weak institutional support. These conditions reduce farmers’ ability to capture the value created along the nutmeg value chain and ultimately limit improvements in income and welfare. Therefore, understanding how value chain performance influences farmer income and welfare is essential for developing effective strategies to improve smallholder livelihoods. This study aims to analyze the direct and indirect relationships between the nutmeg value chain, farmer income, and farmer welfare in Morella Village, Central Maluku District, Indonesia, with income functioning as a mediating variable. The research employed a quantitative explanatory design using survey data collected from 84 nutmeg farmers. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to examine the relationships among the variables and test the mediating role of income. The results show that value chain performance has a positive and significant effect on both farmer income and farmer welfare. Improvements in value chain activities such as production management, logistics, marketing, and institutional support contribute to increased farmer income and improved welfare conditions. In addition, income significantly influences farmer welfare and partially mediates the relationship between value chain performance and welfare outcomes. However, the direct effect of the value chain on welfare is stronger than the indirect effect through income, indicating that structural improvements in the value chain contribute to welfare beyond income increases alone. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening the nutmeg value chain to enhance smallholder welfare. Policies that improve market access, develop post-harvest processing, strengthen farmer institutions, and promote technological adoption are essential to ensure that value creation within the nutmeg value chain translates into sustainable income growth and improved welfare for smallholder farmers.
