Abstract

Penggunaan bahasa yang tepat harus diperoleh seorang anak karena kemampuan berbahasa yang baik tidak hanya terletak pada kepatuhan terhadap aturan gramatikal, tetapi juga pada aturan pragmatik. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi pemerolehan pragmatik anak Indonesia bilingual berusia tiga tahun melalui contoh kasus seorang anak bernama Amelia sebagai subjek. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik simak libat cakap, yakni penulis berpartisipasi langsung di dalam percakapan yang terjadi, dan teknik simak bebas libat cakap, yakni penulis tidak terlibat dalam percakapan (hanya menyimak). Ujaran yang telah direkam selanjutnya ditranskripsi. Analisis disajikan dengan mengikuti Dardjowidjojo (2000). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa banyak konsep universal yang dipatuhi oleh Amelia dalam pemerolehan bahasa. Ragam Bahasa yang diperoleh Amelia adalah ragam bahasa informal dalam bahasa Indonesia maupun bahasa Jawa. Bentuk wacana Amelia sudah mengikuti prinsip-prinsip keserasian, tetapi sering ada beberapa bagian yang kurang berterima bagi orang dewasa. Amelia juga berada dalam tahap pemerolehan pragmatik, yaitu menggunakan bahasa secara sosial dengan tepat, misalnya mengucapkan salam, menggunakan bentuk panggilan yang sesuai, dan kemampuan-kemampuan dalam menggunakan tindak ujar lokusi. The proper use of language must be obtained by a child because the good language skills lie not only in the obidience to grammatical rules, but also to pragmatic ones. This study explores the pragmatic acquisition of a bilingual Indonesian child aged three years old through a case of a child named Amelia as a subject. The technique of data collection used is simak libat cakap that is the writer participate directly in the conversation happening, and technique of simak bebas libat cakap that writer is not involved in conversation (just listening). The speech that has been recorded is transcribed. The analysis is presented following Dardjowidjojo (2000). The result shows that there are many universal concepts that Amelia obeys in her language acquisition. The language variation achieved by Amelia are both the formal variation of Indonesian and Javanese. The form of Amelia?s discourse has followed the principles of harmony, but there are often some parts which are unacceptable for adults. Amelia is also in the pragmatic stage of acquisition that is using language that is socially appropriate, such as greeting, using appropriate forms of calling, and the ability use the act of locution.

Abstract

Interjections are widely applied in Javanese dialect and they characterize particular functions, especially in spoken communication. However, with the growth of economic, urbanization, and associated area depopulation, dialect anomaly will lead to two ways: first, a community will be vulnerable as dynamic urbanization occurs; second, its linguistic characteristic will lead to “linguistic salad-bowl” as the result of “linguistic melting-pots”. Therefore, it is important to study dialects before they disappear in certain areas. In addition, there is relatively little research that has been done on Semarangan Javanese in the area of interjections, as supported by Jovanović (2004), who claims that “Interjections, as one of the marginal and perhaps least discussed upon classes of words”. Semarangan Javanese has some distinct characteristics in its spoken form, especially in its lexical divergence. Consequently, different interjections appear. This research aims to discuss Semarangan Javanese interjections, in terms of the sociopragmatic function applied by Semarangan Javanese speakers in a certain communication context. The researchers applied Jovanović’s interjections classification as the basis of this research. Field research method was used to gather the data by conducting direct observation to research participants. Semarangan Javanese interjections can be explored into three components, namely form, position, and meaning. Based on the findings, the form of Semarangan Javanese interjections are realized from phonological, morphological, and semantic occurrences. These interjections are also recognized in the initial, final, and independent positions. Such variety of meanings from the interjections can be indicated through several contexts that take place in the communication.

Abstract

Salah satu dampak Covid-19 atau virus Corona di bidang bahasa adalah munculnya istilah baru yang berkaitan dengan Covid-19. Para pengguna internet berkontribusi dalam munculnya leksikon Covid-19 khususnya ketika membicarakan topik tersebut di berbagai artikel dan media sosial baik dalam bahasa Inggris maupun bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan kata kunci dan pola kolokasi leksikon bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris yang berhubungan dengan Covid-19 yang ada di ranah cyberspace. Analisis menggunakan metode kuantitatif melalui peranti lunak AntConc untuk mengidentifikasi frekuensi kemunculan dan metode kualitatif melalui pendekatan linguistik korpus untuk mendeskripsikan output yang diperoleh dari AntConc. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa korpus bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia memiliki tema pembahasan yang sama seperti terlihat dari banyaknya kata kunci yang muncul di kedua korpus yang memiliki makna dan tema yang sama. Perbedaan terlihat pada variasi pola kolokasi, yaitubahasa Indonesia memiliki 6 pola kolokasi, sedangkan bahasa Inggris memiliki 4 pola. Hal ini disebabkan oleh perbedaan struktur gramatika masing-masing bahasa. Perbedaan lain adalah kemunculan kata yang memiliki makna setara dengan deaths dalam korpus bahasa Indonesia yang lebih sedikit, sementara jumlah kematian yang diakibatkan oleh Covid-19 di Indonesia termasuk yang tertinggi di dunia.

Abstract

Expecting students to be able to speak English with proper pronunciation and intonation like native speakers is not an easy thing. So far, teaching English at the school level has focused on mastering grammar without focusing on language pronunciation (Silalahi, 2016, p. 163). Students in English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Dian Nuswantoro are required to take English Pronunciation course in their first semester. Based on the researchers’ teaching experience, one of the most common pronunciation errors was found in the intonation for question tags. This research aims to investigate students’ question tag pronunciation errors by using Praat software. It also tries to get the students’ perspective on the use of Praat as a teaching and learning aid for English Pronunciation course. This research employed qualitative descriptive method and used Dehe and Bettina (2013) research on English question tags as the analytical framework. The results showed that errors commonly occur on the pronunciation of down tags, both in conversation and sentences (68% and 53%). Meanwhile, the up tags errors were relatively lower (43%). It is most probably because the students were influenced by the intonation of Bahasa Indonesia, where questions were pronounced with rising intonation. However, after the students were introduced to Praat, the errors decreased significantly i.e., 7% for down tag in conversation, 13% for down tag in sentences, and 3% for up tags. The questionnaire reveals that students gave positive evaluation on the use of Praat in the classroom as it helped them evaluate their own pronunciation.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the translation techniques and find similarities and differences between Google Translate provided by Twitter and Naver Papago ability to translate the nonstandard word contained in @akunyakul’s tweet. This research used Molina & Albir’s (2002) framework to analyze the type of translation techniques applied in translating 131 nonstandard words. The results reveal that there are 6 translation techniques used in translating nonstandard words: adaptation, established equivalent, generalization, literal translation, particularization, and transposition. The most applied translation technique is literal translation since the machines do not understand the context and language style of the tweets. Based on the analysis, the similarities are both machines generally apply the same technique to translate nonstandard words. Meanwhile, the difference is that Google Translate provided by Twitter succeeded in translating more nonstandard words than did Naver Papago. Therefore, it can be said that Google Translate provided by Twitter is better able to translate nonstandard words than Naver Papago. This research suggests that translation machines especially Google Translate provided by Twitter and Naver Papago improve their ability to translate nonstandard words, especially in terms of local language, shortened forms, gestures, common particles, slang words, and writing style.

Abstract

The utterances produced by participants in a trial relates to their role and the trial stage. Therefore, everyone involved in the trial will produce a variety of speech acts. This research aims to describe the types of speech act in Chris Watts trial and to describe the functions of the speech act used in the trial. The analysis is based on Searle's theory of speech act (1979). The researchers used descriptive qualitative method to describe the types of speech act and the functions of the speech acts by analyzing each utterance produced by all of the participants in courtroom. The finding shows that there are 176 utterances of speech acts which consist of 79 representatives, 23 directives, 14 commissives, 51 expressive, and 9 declarations. The researchers also found 26 functions of speech act. The dominant speech act in Chris Watts trial is representative, because all the participants give statements of fact about the case during the trial. Moreover, the most frequently used function of speech act in Chris Watts trial is stating, because, most of the participants' utterance is used to state their belief and thought regarding Chris Watts case. In this research, the specific position of the speaker in the courtroom creates specific function of speech act used. The witnesses utterance is used to condemn the defendant, the judges utterance is used to sentence the defendant, while the prosecutors utterance is used to restate the witnesss statement.

Abstract

Writing in English has always been a difficult skill to be mastered by Indonesian students. In the English Department of Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, students often face challenges in writing concerning grammatical rules and using suitable style in various text types. This research is aimed at investigating whether the students have applied formal academic style in their academic argumentative essays. The method used to analyse the data was descriptive qualitative. The findings demonstrate that there are still some significant errors made by students in their writing. Of the nine types of academic writing style errors proposed by Yakhontova (2003), there are eight types found in the data. These include contraction, addressing the reader directly, direct question, adverb in initial or final position, interjection and hesitation filler, short form of the word or slang, inappropriate negative form, and figures at the beginning of the sentence. Furthermore, the data also reveal a novel finding that there are two other kinds of error that cannot be categorised under Yakhontova’s framework, namely the use of spoken form and emoticon. This research suggests that students’ need to be specifically taught the differences between formal and informal styles of language in speaking and writing classes. They also need to be exposed to English academic texts more so as to be accustomed to formal or academic style.

Abstract

This article discusses the process of translating subtitles from English into Indonesian by visually impaired students. The approach used was a qualitative approach. Furthermore, this approach has two aspects of discussion, namely genetic (the translator) and objective (the translated text). First of all, the genetic aspect of this research is the translator sub-competence of visually impaired students. Furthermore, the objective aspect in this research is related to the translation process and the translations they produce. The data were collected using observation, true assignment, and recording techniques. Based on the research results, the translator’s sub-competencies include a) bilingual sub-competence; b) extralinguistic sub-competence; c) instrumental sub-competence; d) transfer sub-competence; e) strategic sub-competence; and f) psychophysiological components. To improve the quality of translation of visually impaired students, the researchers have compiled eight translation recommendations, such as translators must: pay attention to the suitability of the meaning of the source language, avoid omitting linguistic units, pay attention to word classes, and so on. Based on these recommendations, it is imperative that visually impaired students implement them in order to improve their capability as early-career translators.

Abstract

A stand-up comedy performance is not only about amusing the audiences with the joke, but it also has other functions. This research analyzes the pragmatic strategies and function of Louis C.K.’s stand-up comedy concert “Oh My God”. Raskin and Attardo’s (1992) General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) and Grice’s (1975) maxims of cooperative principle were employed as the framework of the analysis. A descriptive qualitative method was also used to analyze the data. The result reveals that Louis C.K.’s jokes in this concert mostly violate the maxim of quantity to generate laughter through exaggeration and faulty reason. Furthermore, Louis C.K.’s stand-up comedy is not only a way to entertain but it also has another function, that is, to deliver certain messages to the audience. Louis C.K.’s joke is also a form of giving a narrative to the audiences to understand the reality that people face in another point of view.
