Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how a Malaysian opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, flouted the Grice's (1975) maxims during the interview in Kick Andy show. The talk show was aired in 2007 when Indonesia and Malaysia were on political dispute caused by the abusive behaviour of some Malaysians towards Indonesian domestic migrant workers. The results illustrate that the interviewee did not simply answer the questions as commonly expected, but rather flouted frequently. Several strategies of flouting the maxims such as giving overstatements, understatements, hints, and figure of speech were used. Throughout the show, it appeared that Anwar wanted the audience to believe that Malaysian government allegation (corruption and sodomy) towards him was groundless. He also showed his support for Indonesian workers and raised the issue without being asked. In this case, Anwar flouted the maxims not only to raise implicature but also to serve his particular goals as a politician, i.e. to establish a positive image. Keywords: implicature, maxims, opposition, politician, talk-show

Abstract

Expecting students to be able to speak English with proper pronunciation and intonation like native speakers is not an easy thing. So far, teaching English at the school level has focused on mastering grammar without focusing on language pronunciation (Silalahi, 2016, p. 163). Students in English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Dian Nuswantoro are required to take English Pronunciation course in their first semester. Based on the researchers’ teaching experience, one of the most common pronunciation errors was found in the intonation for question tags. This research aims to investigate students’ question tag pronunciation errors by using Praat software. It also tries to get the students’ perspective on the use of Praat as a teaching and learning aid for English Pronunciation course. This research employed qualitative descriptive method and used Dehe and Bettina (2013) research on English question tags as the analytical framework. The results showed that errors commonly occur on the pronunciation of down tags, both in conversation and sentences (68% and 53%). Meanwhile, the up tags errors were relatively lower (43%). It is most probably because the students were influenced by the intonation of Bahasa Indonesia, where questions were pronounced with rising intonation. However, after the students were introduced to Praat, the errors decreased significantly i.e., 7% for down tag in conversation, 13% for down tag in sentences, and 3% for up tags. The questionnaire reveals that students gave positive evaluation on the use of Praat in the classroom as it helped them evaluate their own pronunciation.

Abstract

In understanding a language, people should consider the context usage such the cultural aspect and structure of the language itself. One of the study in translation is annotated translation. Jenny William and Andrew Chesterman reveal annotated translation is a translation with commentary. In this research, the researchers are challenged to know her ability in transferring Indonesian document, “Peraturan Gubernur Jawa Tengah No. 11 Tahun 2017”, a regulation of Central Java Governor to English by using annotated translation. This document contains an important information about fulfilling disabled people rights in Central Java. The researchers applied Larson’s theory in rendering the document. The translation process can be explored into 8 steps, those are preparation, analysis, transfer, initial draft, reworking initial draft, testing, polishing, and preparing the manuscript for the publisher. However, the researchers combined the processes by adding Agus Sri Giyanti’s own procedures as she is a visually impaired translator who was involved in this research. The procedures are converting the data and comprehending the text. This research also examines the classification of disability terminologies and their techniques used in translating the terms in order to establishing acceptable translation. In order to analyze the data, the researchers applied introspective and retrospective methodology. Introspective methodology is a method which is almost similar to the introspection of personal work. A retrospective study examines the factors of a causing problem by looking backward from the beginning of the study. This study firstly, aims at giving explanation for the disability terms on the Pergub Jawa Tengah No. 11 Tahun 2017. Secondly, to evaluate the ability of researcher in translating Indonesian regulation into English naturally. Last, since one of the researchers is a visually impaired translator, hopefully this study may provide some information on how the novice translator with visual impairment could translate Indonesian text into the English one independently.

Abstract

Writing in English has always been a difficult skill to be mastered by Indonesian students. In the English Department of Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, students often face challenges in writing concerning grammatical rules and using suitable style in various text types. This research is aimed at investigating whether the students have applied formal academic style in their academic argumentative essays. The method used to analyse the data was descriptive qualitative. The findings demonstrate that there are still some significant errors made by students in their writing. Of the nine types of academic writing style errors proposed by Yakhontova (2003), there are eight types found in the data. These include contraction, addressing the reader directly, direct question, adverb in initial or final position, interjection and hesitation filler, short form of the word or slang, inappropriate negative form, and figures at the beginning of the sentence. Furthermore, the data also reveal a novel finding that there are two other kinds of error that cannot be categorised under Yakhontova’s framework, namely the use of spoken form and emoticon. This research suggests that students’ need to be specifically taught the differences between formal and informal styles of language in speaking and writing classes. They also need to be exposed to English academic texts more so as to be accustomed to formal or academic style.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of swear words, translation techniques, and the changes in meaning in the After We Collided movie. A descriptive-qualitative approach is used in this research. Based on the findings and discussion, there were 50 data on swear words and translation techniques. Shift in meaning, as many as 16 data had found. There are 4 types of swear words: abusive (42%), cathartic (30%), idiomatic (24%), and emphatic (4%). There are 6 translation techniques used: adaptation (60%), amplification (4%), reduction (20%), modulation (2%), established equivalence (6%), and literal translation (8%). Shift in the meaning of eufimia as many as 12 data are found in 4 translation techniques: reduction, adaptation, modulation, and amplification. Loss of information as many as 4 data found in reduction techniques. The reason why abusive swearing becomes the most frequently found data is because it shows the use of language intended to harass, intimidate, and humiliate the interlocutor. The adaptation technique is the most used because swear words are translated with equivalents that are often used in Indonesian culture. Eufimia found in this data because swear words in the target language become more refined. Loss of information occurs when words in the source language are not translated into the target language.

Abstract

This article discusses the process of translating subtitles from English into Indonesian by visually impaired students. The approach used was a qualitative approach. Furthermore, this approach has two aspects of discussion, namely genetic (the translator) and objective (the translated text). First of all, the genetic aspect of this research is the translator sub-competence of visually impaired students. Furthermore, the objective aspect in this research is related to the translation process and the translations they produce. The data were collected using observation, true assignment, and recording techniques. Based on the research results, the translator’s sub-competencies include a) bilingual sub-competence; b) extralinguistic sub-competence; c) instrumental sub-competence; d) transfer sub-competence; e) strategic sub-competence; and f) psychophysiological components. To improve the quality of translation of visually impaired students, the researchers have compiled eight translation recommendations, such as translators must: pay attention to the suitability of the meaning of the source language, avoid omitting linguistic units, pay attention to word classes, and so on. Based on these recommendations, it is imperative that visually impaired students implement them in order to improve their capability as early-career translators.
