Abstract

Background: Breast milk is the best food for newborns until the age of 2 years, but many breastfeeding mothers have difficulty breastfeeding and cause anxiety, stress, and depression. This condition causes the growth of the hormone oxytocin to be slow so that the milk production does not go smoothly. Objective: developing the application of virtual reality (VR) glasses as oxytocin relaxation therapy to increase breast milk production in postpartum mothers. Method: the method used was pre-experimental with a one-group pretest-posttest design approach. Results: This research involved respondents with the criteria; breastfeeding mothers with an age range of 20-35 years, the majority of whom have higher education, most of whom work. The results show that there is a difference in the average before and after treatment with VR glasses, namely the average before treatment was 57.11 with an SD of 13,546, the average after treatment was 73.55 with an SD of 9.921. Statistical test results obtained a p-value of 0.000 (p<) with a difference in the average value of 11.44. The conclusion is that postpartum mothers who are breastfeeding are comforted by the application of audio-visual, thereby stabilizing the increase in the hormone oxytocin which acts as an increase in breast milk production.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Maternal and child health (MCH) is crucial for public health, especially in low- and middle-income countries like Indonesia. Despite improvements in healthcare infrastructure, challenges remain in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates, with low birth weight (LBW) posing a significant concern. Previous research has largely examined individual factors, such as maternal age, parity, or nutritional status, in isolation. To date, there has been no comprehensive analysis integrating the various determinants of LBW within the Indonesian context.Purpose: This study aimed to comprehensively analyze factors associated with LBW incidence in Indonesia to inform sustainable MCH strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to analyze data from 420 newborns and their mothers. A structured questionnaire and medical record reviews were used to collect data on maternal characteristics, antenatal care attendance, birth outcomes, and infant characteristics. Data were obtained from maternal and child health reports collected by primary health centers and hospitals under the Ministry of Health between 2021 and 2023. Statistical analyses, including bivariate Chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression, were conducted to identify factors associated with LBW incidence. Results: The prevalence of LBW among newborns was 34.3%. Significant associations were found between LBW and maternal anemia (OR = 1.53; 95% CI = 1.16–2.03), irregular antenatal care attendance (OR 11.9; 95% CI 8.17–17.32), multiparity (OR = 0.61; 95% CI = 0.43–0.88), and preterm birth (OR = 11.22; 95% CI = 7.55–16.68). Primiparous mothers and full-term infants were less likely to experience LBW. Among the associated factors, irregular antenatal care visits and preterm birth emerged as the most dominant risk factors. No significant associations were observed with maternal complications, chronic diseases, infant gender, mode of delivery, or maternal age. Conclusion: Targeted interventions addressing maternal anemia, improving access to and adherence with antenatal care, and preventing preterm births are critical strategies for reducing LBW in Indonesia. The findings in this study underscore the need to improve maternal nutrition and encourage pregnant women to attend regular antenatal care visits.

Abstract

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition that can lead to severe complications if not detected and treated early. This study focuses on the development of a non-invasive jaundice detection tool using a TCS3200 color sensor, which aims to provide early diagnosis by measuring skin discoloration associated with elevated bilirubin levels. The methodology for the study involved several stages: designing the device, calibrating the color sensor, and conducting field tests in clinical settings. The TCS3200 sensor was used to capture the skin color from various body areas of newborns, including the forehead, chest, abdomen, and limbs. The collected data were correlated with serum bilirubin levels, and the severity of jaundice was classified using the Kramer scale, a clinical tool that assesses the spread of yellow pigmentation across the body. The results showed that the jaundice detection tool achieved a high degree of accuracy, with its readings closely mirroring laboratory-based bilirubin measurements. This was particularly evident in cases of moderate to severe jaundice, where the tool provided precise early detection. The non-invasive nature of the tool, combined with its portability, makes it an ideal solution for use in healthcare facilities with limited access to laboratory equipment. Additionally, the tool can be operated by healthcare workers with minimal training, which enhances its potential for deployment in rural or underserved areas. The study concludes that the developed jaundice detection tool has significant potential to improve neonatal care by enabling early diagnosis and timely intervention, thereby reducing the risk of severe jaundice-related complications. Future research will focus on scaling up the testing of the device across a larger and more diverse population of newborns, as well as pursuing product certification to facilitate broader implementation in healthcare settings.
