Abstract

The increasing demand for soybean is driven by population growth and development of industry. The current import of soybean should be considered as pragmatic solution to fill the gap between supply and demand. In the long term, the domestic production of soybean has to be increased to minimize the dependency on imported soybean. As part of soybean breeding program for yield improvement, this study was undertaken to evaluate the performances of five elite lines (11 AB, 13 ED, 14 DD, 19 BE, and 25 EC) derived from cross of Malabar and Kipas Putih as compared to their parental varieties and Tanggamus (commercial variety). The evaluation was set up in a completely randomized block design with three replications. Significant variations among the genotypes were found on plant height, flowering date, number of fertile node, hundred seed weight, plant biomass, and protein and lipid contents, but not on number of productive branch, maturity date, pod number, yield per plant, and yield per plot. In most cases, the evaluated lines had intermediary performances between their parental varieties, although some lines produced earlier flowering, larger seed, higher protein content, and lower lipid content. 11 AB exhibited a superiority over its parental and Tanggamus in term of plant biomass and protein content.

Abstract

Success in a breeding program is primarily determined by the availability of information about the genetic diversity of the genetic material used and the expected heritability of the character to be improved. The objective of this study was to determine genetic diversity and heritability of growth and yield components of 10 curly chili genotypes. This research was conducted in September 2015 - February 2016 in the Medan Baru field experiment of Faculty of Agriculture at Kandang Limun Village, Muara Bangkahulu Subdistrict, Bengkulu City. The experiment was arranged in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with ten genotypes and six replications. The genotypes used were Local Payakumbuh, Ferosa, Laris, Kopay, Romario, Keriting Hitam, Local Curup, Bogota, Sempurna and Mario. The results showed that genetic diversity of the ten varieties was narrow based on plant height variables, dichotomous height, stem diameter, flowering age, harvest age, fruit length, fruit diameter, weight per fruit and number of fruits.  Stem diameter, fruit length, fruit diameter and weight per fruit had moderate heritability estimates; meanwhile, anthesis and number of fruits showed low heritability.

Abstract

This research was conducted in Beringin Raya Sungai Hitam Village, Muara Bangkahulu Subdistrict, Bengkulu City from January to April 2016.  The research aims to compare the growth and yield of 9 lines of soybean expectation with 2 varieties of comparison (Tanggamus and Demas 1) on sandy land. The design used in this study was Completely Randomized Block Design (RAKL) using a single treatment factor of 11 soybean genotypes consisting of 9 lines of expectation (G4AB, G2BB, G1DB, 13 ED, 14 DD, 19 BE, 25 EC, G511H / Anj-2-10, and G511H / Anj-1-3) and 2 varieties of comparison (Tanggamus and Demas 1), each treatment was repeated four times to obtain 44 experimental units. Variables that significantly affect the F test at 5% level, followed by cluster analysis of Scott-Knott at 5% level. Of the 9 lines of expectation tested only 13 ED lines, 14 DD, and 25 EC had a number of comparable books comparable to the comparison varieties (Tanggamus and Demas 1). The comparative varieties had moderate flowering, deep harvest age, highest plant height, number of productive branches and the largest number of fertile books compared to the 9 tested lines. Density 13 ED, 14 DD, 25 EC has a number of pods of content comparable to the comparison varieties. The G511H / Anj-2-10 strain has more number of seeds per pod than the comparable strain / variety tested. The ED 13 line has a seed weight per plot proportional to the comparison varieties (Tanggamus and Demas 1), but is higher than the expected line of test. While the 19 BE strain has a weight of 100 seeds higher than the other strains / varieties tested

Abstract

Tomato is a high nutritional value fruit vegetables. Genetic variation is valuable plant breeding material which can be measured in terms of yield potential. This study aimed to compare the growth and yield components of 16 tomato genotypes in the lowlands. The experiment was conducted in Medan Baru Experimental Station of, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu, with the elevation of 10 m above sea level. This was performed from September 2013 to January 2014. The experiment was set in a completely randomized design with a single factor of 16 tomato genotypes with 3 replications acounting to 48 experimental units, each of which consisted of 2 plants. The sixteen genotypes tested were Mirah, Berlian, CIN 06, SU, Kudamati 3, Lombok 3, Lombok 4, Makassar, Aceh 3, Aceh 5, Ranti Situbondo, Ranti, Situbondo Gelombang, Situbondo, Kemir, Meranti 2, Gondol Lonjong. There were significant differences in plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, stomatal density, flowering age, harvest age, fruit diameter, fruit sweetness, fruit hardness, total fruit weight, fresh weight, and dry weight. Based on total fruit weight. The genotypes potentially cultivated in the lowlands are Ranti, Situbondo Gelombang, Kudamati 3, Situbondo, and Makassar.

Abstract

Combining ability is the genotype's ability to pass on the desired character to the offspring.  Combining ability information is needed to determine the crossed pairs in the formation of hybrid varieties.  The purpose of this study was to obtain information on the combining ability value of six S7 generation of inbreed maize.  The experiment was conducted in September 2015 until January 2016, at Medan Baru Experimental Station of Faculty of Agriculture, at Kandang Limun village, Muara Bangkahulu Sub-district, Bengkulu City.  The experiment was prepared in a Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with 15 corn hybrid treatments including: G1XG3, G1XG6, G3XG6, G1XG7, G3XG7, G6XG7, G1XG8, G3XG8, G6XG8, G7XG8, G1XG9, G3XG9, G6XG9, G7XG9 and G8xG9.  Each experimental unit was repeated three times obtaining 45 experimental plots.  Estimation of general combining ability (GCA) value  and specific combining ability (SCA) of each inbreed strain were conducted with Griffing model IV method.  The results showed that genotype G1 and G3 had positive GCA values for all characters except plant height.  The G7XG1 cross combination showed a positive SCA on all characters even higher in plant height and stem diameter. The G8XG6 cross combination showed high SCA values for leaf number characters, weight of husk-less cob, number of seeds per seed-line, weight of grain per ear, and grain yield per plot. Keywords: Hybrid, corn, GCA and SCA
