Abstract

Abstract

This narrative review explores the determinants of musical expressivity in performance, focusing on attentional focus, accompaniment quality, and mindfulness-based strategies as critical factors influencing perception and evaluation. The study aimed to synthesize empirical findings across music psychology, pedagogy, and performance studies to develop an integrative understanding of expressivity. Literature was collected systematically through Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, using targeted keyword combinations and applying rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review incorporated diverse methodologies, including experimental, cohort, and case study designs, to capture the multidimensional nature of expressivity. Results revealed that attentional focus significantly shapes audience evaluations, demonstrating that perception is mediated by cognitive framing and cultural orientation. Accompaniment quality was shown to enhance interpretive cohesion, emphasizing the relational dimension of performance. Additionally, mindfulness practices improved expressive depth by helping musicians manage stress and sustain emotional engagement, yielding benefits for both performers and audiences. Discussion highlighted systemic barriers such as narrow pedagogical frameworks and biased evaluative practices that undermine expressive development. Potential solutions include embedding mindfulness programs, fostering collaborative rehearsal strategies, and integrating attentional framing into curricula. The findings affirm the urgency of reconceptualizing expressivity as a central component of music education and performance evaluation. Future research should expand beyond Western classical contexts, adopt multimodal approaches, and address structural barriers to expressive development. By advancing these perspectives, this review contributes to a holistic understanding of musical expressivity and its vital role in creating meaningful and resonant performance experiences.

Abstract

Karambangan is a traditional vocal genre of the Pamona people in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, blending poetic kayori with guitar based harmonic textures. This study aims to analyze the vocal interpretation strategies employed by Karambangan performers, focusing on the integration of harmony, diction, and vocal affect within cultural and pedagogical contexts. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the research combines ethnographic fieldwork, harmonic transcription, phonetic analysis, and cultural interpretation. Data were collected through audio recordings, kayori texts, and interviews with performers. Harmonic progressions were mapped, vocal timbre and vibrato were measured, and rhetorical features in lyrics were analyzed. Findings reveal that Karambangan vocalists emphasize emotional nuance through vibrato restraint, nasal resonant timbre, and precise prosodic alignment. Harmonic structures often based on three chord cycles and supported by alternate guitar tunings offer a stable platform for expressive delivery. Kayori lines are vocally interpreted through dynamic shaping, rhetorical timing, and culturally informed diction. The study also discusses the pedagogical value of these techniques and the ethical considerations of transitioning the genre from ritual to stage. Karambangan emerges as a genre of artistic and cultural significance, where voice serves not only as a musical tool but also as a moral and spiritual practice. The research contributes a genre specific model for vocal interpretation in indigenous traditions and highlights the importance of culturally embedded music education.

Abstract

In the Pasuruan Regency of East Java Province, specifically in the Tutur Subdistrict, there is a village called Wonosari that holds a unique traditional ceremony to honor God, seek His blessings, and request safety from disasters for the village. The villagers of Wonosari conduct this traditional ceremony, which involves oral literature in the form of mantras. The mantras used in this tradition serve as prayers and are recited during the ritual burial of a cow's head in the center of the market. The mantras are recited by the village elders or traditional shamans during the ceremony. During the execution, the mantras are chanted aloud and listened to by the villagers of Wonosari in a solemn atmosphere. The traditional ritual of burying a cow's head in the village of Wonosari is known as Grebeg Memetri. The term "Grebeg" originates from a royal tradition aimed at distributing agricultural produce as charity to the people. The existence of mantras in the Grebeg Memetri tradition reflects the mindset of the village residents. This mindset is closely related to matters of belief, mythology, and experience. The villagers' mindset can be discerned from the oral traditions recited by the traditional shamans during the Grebeg Memetri ceremony. Investigating the mindset of the residents of Wonosari is intriguing, considering various aspects such as belief, mythology, and experience that accompany it.Given the issues described above, this research aims to examine the mindset of the residents of Wonosari through the oral tradition of Grebeg Memetri. To investigate the mindset of the villagers as manifested in the oral tradition of Grebeg Memetri, a literary approach called ethno-semiotics is required. Ethno-semiotics is an interdisciplinary field that combines ethnography and semiotics. The use of the ethno-semiotic approach is expected to represent the mindset of the residents of Wonosari based on the sign systems found in the oral tradition of Grebeg Memetri.
