Abstract

This study examines the determinants of herding bias in investors in Indonesia during the Covid-19 New Normal period. This study was conducted for six months to survey the behavior of 232 investors with a single investor identification in the Indonesian capital market who were haphazardly selected to test the herding bias model. The results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis show that reputational factors, social proof, lack of awareness, volatility in global markets, underconfidence, optimism, bandwagon effect, and speculation are the determinants of investor herding bias in Indonesia. The results of this study also prove that the reputation factor is the dominant factor determining herding behavior, where investors will follow the behavior of their community to maintain their reputation. The second factor that contributes highly to determining herding bias is social proof, which means that Indonesian investors consider social roles in the decision-making process. We hope the results of this study can provide researchers and practitioners with a better understanding of herding behavior which is part of the theory of financial behavior.

Abstract

This study explores the "Can Do" and "Will Do" elements of human capital that impact university performance. Human capital, comprising both "Can Do" and "Will Do" elements, plays a pivotal role in driving organizational success, particularly in academic institutions. To investigate these elements within the university context, we conducted an exploratory qualitative research design using semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 12 purposely selected university practitioners and experts. The study results show that a high knowledge level, skills, capabilities, and experiences characterize the "Can Do" mindset. In contrast, the "Will Do" attitude encompasses personal traits, achievement motivation, and engagement with the job and institution. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of cultivating a synergistic relationship between human capital's "Can Do" and "Will Do" aspects for driving sustainable improvements in university performance. By leveraging these insights, academic institutions can optimize their resources and empower their faculty to achieve greater success and impact.

Abstract

The convergence of the Eurasian, Indo-Australian, and Pacific tectonic plates in the Sulawesi and Maluku regions results in high seismic activity, making these areas prone to frequent earthquakes. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of earthquake events and assess the influence of geological features such as volcanoes, active faults, and subduction zones on earthquake risk. Using the inhomogeneous Thomas cluster process, spatial modeling was conducted based on earthquake epicenter data from 2009 to 2020 with magnitudes ≥ 4.5. Each epicenter's distance to the nearest geological feature was used as a covariate. The results of the Chi-square test indicate significant spatial inhomogeneity, while the inhomogeneous K-function reveals that earthquakes tend to occur in clustered patterns. Parameter estimates show that proximity to volcanoes has the most substantial impact, increasing earthquake intensity by approximately 1.8 times for every 100 km closer to a volcano. Faults and subduction zones contribute with relative effects of 0.7 and 0.9 times, respectively. The model demonstrates good fit based on envelope simulation. Earthquake risk prediction maps identify Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, and North Maluku as high-risk zones. This model can serve as a valuable tool to support disaster mitigation planning and improve regional earthquake preparedness strategies.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in the global economy, Driving job creation, fostering innovation, and contributing to economic growth. However, Indonesia faces challenges in increasing the number of entrepreneurs and enhancing economic productivity. This article presents a case study on the Faculty of Economics and Business at Syiah Kuala University's community engagement activities aimed at developing students' entrepreneurial and cross-cultural competencies. The activities encompass experiential learning, mentorship, networking, and cultural collaboration, aligning with achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through experiential learning, students gain practical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and a global mindset, equipping them for entrepreneurship and business. Collaborative initiatives with international partners, such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and interactions with Indonesian diaspora entrepreneurs in Singapore enhance students' cross-cultural competence. They learn to respect diversity, adapt to different cultural norms, and collaborate effectively across cultures. The activities also facilitate networking and collaboration, enabling students to establish connections with diaspora entrepreneurs and international peers. These connections can lead to future partnerships and collaborative efforts. The community engagement activities empower students with the skills, knowledge, and global perspective necessary to excel as entrepreneurs and positively impact the achievement of SDGs. The emphasis on economically viable, culturally sensitive, environmentally sustainable, and socially responsible entrepreneurship aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development, contributing to the development of sustainable entrepreneurship in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of inflation and interest rates on rupiah exchange rate fluctuations during the period January 2023–December 2024. The study uses a quantitative approach with multiple linear regression methods on monthly data sourced from the Central Statistics Agency and Bank Indonesia. The independent variables include inflation and interest rates (BI 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate), while the dependent variable is the fluctuation of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar. The results show that, both partially and simultaneously, inflation and interest rates do not have a significant effect on the fluctuation of the rupiah exchange rate. This finding indicates that exchange rate dynamics during the study period were more influenced by external pressures than by domestic macroeconomic factors. The scientific contribution of this research lies in presenting the latest empirical evidence on the weakening effectiveness of domestic monetary policy transmission on exchange rate volatility in the context of global monetary tightening. Theoretically, these results confirm that the interest rate parity approach and monetary framework are not always able to explain short-term exchange rate fluctuations when external factors are dominant. The implication is that foreign exchange risk management needs to strengthen hedging strategies, businesses must anticipate potential increases in import costs due to exchange rate volatility, and pricing decisions need to consider exchange rate uncertainty as a strategic factor that is not fully responsive to domestic interest rate policy.
