Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by Guidance and Counseling (GC) teachers to assist students in career selection a process often influenced by their parents' past experiences. The study utilizes a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, involving Grade XII students, parents, GC teachers, and the Principal of SMA Negeri 2 Tenggarong. The findings indicate that GC teachers implement strategies such as individual counseling, mediation, and fostering collaboration between students and parents to facilitate career decision-making. These strategies help bridge the gap in perspectives between students and parents differences stemming from the parents' own past life experiences. During implementation, GC teachers faced challenges such as low parental involvement and resistance during the mediation process. However, intensive and empathetic communication succeeded in increasing openness and parental support for the students' career choices. The results demonstrate that parents' past experiences are a crucial factor shaping their mindsets, expectations, and career orientations regarding their children; therefore, this factor must be considered when delivering career guidance and counseling services in schools. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting the role of parents' past experiences as a contextual factor that GC teachers must address when reconciling differing career perspectives between students and parents. These findings can serve as a reference for GC teachers in developing career guidance services that are more contextual, collaborative, and student-centered.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the experiences of Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers in applying empathic communication during individual counseling sessions. A qualitative approach using a phenomenological design was employed. The research subjects consisted of three BK teachers actively conducting individual counseling services. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis involved coding, theme identification, and the interpretation of the meaning behind the participants' experiences. The results indicate that empathic communication develops through repeated counseling practice and is reflected in the teachers' ability to build trusting relationships, understand students' emotions, and create a comfortable, non-judgmental counseling atmosphere. The findings also highlight specific micro-skills that support empathic communication, including active listening, reflecting feelings, using open-ended questions, and non-verbal communication. Empathic communication is understood not merely as a communication ability but as a skill that evolves through experience and the interaction process between the teacher and the student during counseling. These findings can serve as a basis for developing BK teachers' empathic communication competence to enhance the effectiveness of individual counseling services in schools.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the suboptimal Guidance and Counseling (BK) services in handling problematic student behavior related to low economic conditions. This study aims to describe the role of BK teachers as counselors and consultants in helping low-economic status students with problematic behavior at SMP Negeri 1 Samarinda. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. The research informants consisted of BK teachers as the main informants and students and homeroom teachers as additional informants. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and SaldaƱa model, and tested for validity through source triangulation. The results of the study indicate that low economic conditions cause feelings of inferiority that influence the emergence of problematic behavior, including theft. In handling these problems, BK teachers carry out the role of counselors through individual counseling with an empathetic approach in the form of non-judgmental acceptance, active listening, building a sense of security, and helping students express feelings of shame and inferiority due to their family's economic condition. The process of developing self-acceptance occurs by providing space for students to recognize and express their feelings, understand their circumstances realistically, and receive reinforcement that a family's economic situation does not determine their self-worth. As consultants, guidance counselors collaborate with homeroom teachers and parents through communication, providing understanding, and conducting home visits when parental resistance is encountered. This collaboration supports changes in student behavior, characterized by a reduction in deviant behavior, increased openness in interactions, and the emergence of a more adaptive attitude toward their circumstances. Thus, an empathetic approach combined with collaboration between guidance counselors, homeroom teachers, and parents contributes to helping students build self-acceptance and develop more adaptive behavior. These findings reinforce the need for guidance counselors to view problematic behavior contextually, taking into account both economic factors and the student's psychological condition.
