Abstract

Tinjauan sistematis ini mengikuti panduan dari Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).

Abstract

Sumberurip Village, located in Pronojiwo District, Lumajang Regency, is predominantly an agricultural village where most of the community members farm salak (snake fruit). Up until now, the agricultural yield has primarily been marketed as raw produce. Additionally, stunting remains a critical issue in Lumajang Regency. Common challenges include highly fluctuating prices for salak, which tend to drop during harvest season due to an abundant supply, as well as the community’s limited knowledge and skills in processing and managing the fruit beyond raw sales. The Community Service Program for Village Development (KKN-UMD) of Jember University, Group 290, held in July - August 2024, aims to empower the Sumberurip community by increasing the value of salak through the creation of Salak Pie, which could also serve as an alternative snack for supplementary feeding programs (PMT) to help prevent stunting. The activities are conducted by providing training to the community on how to process salak into salak pie, as well as strategies for promoting and marketing these products. The Village Government and the community have warmly welcomed this initiative, considering it highly beneficial for enhancing the market value of their salak harvests and offering a nutritious local food alternative. The purpose of this community service is to equip the people of Sumberurip Village with knowledge and skills to process salak into Salak Pie, which is intended to boost the local economy while also providing a nutritious alternative for supplementary feeding programs.

Abstract

Background: Chlorpyrifos is one of the organophosphate pesticide types frequently utilized as a pest control agent in Indonesia. Despite its effectiveness in combating pests, the residue levels of chlorpyrifos in the environment and plants have raised serious concerns. Long-term accumulation of chlorpyrifos in the body can lead to organ damage, particularly in the liver and kidneys, which may decrease serum albumin levels. Objective: To investigate the impact of low-dose chlorpyrifos exposure over time on serum albumin levels in Wistar rats. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: the normal control group (Kn) received normal saline solution (+5% Tween 20) orally for 56 days, while the treatment groups (K1, K2, K3, and K4) were administered chlorpyrifos at a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight for 7 days (acute), 14 days (subacute), 28 days (subchronic), and 56 days (subchronic) orally. Serum albumin levels were measured using the dye-binding method with a spectrophotometer. Results: The measurement results indicate that the normal control group (Kn) had the highest serum albumin levels (4.326±0.519 g/dL). Serum albumin levels decreased in the groups treated with chlorpyrifos. The longer the chlorpyrifos exposure, the lower the serum albumin levels. The lowest serum albumin levels were found in group K4 with chlorpyrifos exposure for 56 days (2.826±0.358 g/dL). Statistical analysis using One-way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD tests showed significant differences (p<0.05) between all treatment groups (K1, K2, K3, and K4) and the control group (Kn).Conclusion: This study shows that administering low-dose chlorpyrifos over a period of 7 to 56 days has a significant effect in reducing serum albumin levels in Wistar rats. The clinical implications of this decrease in serum albumin levels need to be considered in the context of exposure to organophosphate pesticide residues in humans.

Abstract

Abstract

Increased use of pesticides can have detrimental health consequences, one of which is chronic neurotoxicity. The symptoms include degenerative and neurobehavioral issues. Chronic neurotoxicity occurs through oxidative stress, inflammation, and neurotransmitter disturbances. This study aimed to determine chronic neurotoxicity and test malondialdehyde and cholinesterase levels as neurotoxicity biomarkers among agricultural workers in Wuluhan, Jember, Indonesia. The 60-person research sample was divided into two groups: agricultural and non-agricultural workers. The interview utilized a mini-mental score examination, Chan's questionnaire, and the Patient Health Questionnaire to analyze the cognitive impairment, Parkinsonism, and depressive symptoms. The examination of serum malondialdehyde levels was performed using the TBARS method and cholinesterase levels by photometric kinetic method at a biochemistry laboratory from October to November 2022. Results showed cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms in agricultural workers, as well as high levels of malondialdehyde and low cholinesterase levels. This study concludes the presence of chronic pesticide neurotoxicity among agricultural workers in Jember, Indonesia, and that malondialdehyde and cholinesterase levels might serve as biomarkers of pesticide-induced neurotoxicity.

Abstract

Abstract

Waste management is a major challenge in Pandansari Village, Kedungjajang District, Lumajang Regency, particularly due to sugarcane farming waste (dry leaves) and household waste, which are commonly burned in the open. This practice produces thick smoke that negatively affects air quality, public health, and road safety. The issue aligns with growing concerns over environmental health, especially as air pollution increases due to human activities such as open waste burning. This community service program aims to offer a more effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly waste management solution through the design and training of a low-smoke waste incinerator. The program’s partners include the village authorities and residents of Pandansari. Activities were carried out using participatory methods to involve the community at every stage, along with demonstrations to teach the technical skills for building, operating, and maintaining the device. The results show that the incinerator significantly reduces smoke emissions, is easy to operate, and has economic potential through production and sales opportunities. This innovation is important as it demonstrates anenvironmentally friendly technology that can be adapted and replicated in other regions facing similar waste management challenges. Keywords: Community service, waste management, low-smoke waste incinerator, environmentally friendly technology.
