Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a disease characterized by increased uric acid levels in the blood. Hyperuricemia is significantly associated with the incidence of gouty arthritis which can interfere with the patient's physical activity. Hyperuricemia can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. This community service activity aims to provide health education regarding the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia. The method of implementing this activity is counseling several residents at the RW hall in Keputih Subdistrict, Surabaya. Counseling is carried out in the form of presentations or lectures accompanied by leaflets followed by discussions and questions and answers. Participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire before and after the education to measure their level of knowledge regarding the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia. The material provided in this counseling is normal uric acid values in men and women, risk factors for hyperuricemia, symptoms of hyperuricemia, efforts to prevent hyperuricemia, and ways to deal with hyperuricemia if hyperuricemia occurs. This counseling was attended by 55 participants, but only 32 participants filled in the questionnaire completely. The mean knowledge score of participants increased significantly from 11.31±1.59 before counseling to 12.09±0.85 after counseling (p-value = 0.018). This shows that counseling using presentations accompanied by the provision of leaflets can increase participants' knowledge. Regular follow-up outreach activities are needed to educate the public regarding the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia.
