Abstract

Deaf students have their characteristics in carrying out social interactions. Their distinctive social interactions influence the communal space setting on the Meruya campus of Mercu Buana University. This study uses a qualitative method and derives its approach from the emerging concept of deaf space architecture. Data were collected by mapping the behavior of deaf students, observation, and interviews. The results showed that behavior, activities, and spatial dimensions influenced the formation of communal spaces. Deaf students tend to rely on visual senses, which are controlled by spatial experiences in their activities. Deaf students tend to choose a gathering room that can provide easy access to move, which includes distance and density (deaf space), sensory reach, mobility, and the ability to provide high visibility to find out the presence of lecturers and an accessible parking area.[Mahasiswa Tuli memiliki karakteristik tersendiri dalam melakukan interaksi sosial.

Abstract

Universitas Mercu Buana (UMB) has not declared itself an inclusive higher learning institution. However, there has been a long-standing concern for specific students with disabilities. More than 27 students with disabilities have been admitted to UMB. As the university has not provided accommodation facilities that cater to different disabilities, some students with disabilities may take 5–6 years to graduate because they are unable to actualize themselves fully. For UMB to set an example and serve as a model for inclusive campuses in Indonesia, the activity's goals are to raise awareness of the need for inclusive campuses and provide sensitivity training for the academic community regarding special services for students with disabilities. The strategies for implementing this activity include promoting the development of inclusive campus policies, holding sensitivity training for special services for students with disabilities for the UMB academic community, and assessing and evaluating the training participants. The participants have gained an understanding of the perspectives of students with disabilities and how to interact with them through simulations as a result of this exercise. Following the needs of students with various disabilities, the academic community aims to prepare the availability of reasonable accommodation facilities. The participants could absorb, process, and understand what the two presenters had to say

Abstract

In the era of environmental uncertainty in the use of sustainable materials in terms of material fulfillment and increasing concern for sustainability, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) building play an important role in implementing national habitat and forestry environmental policies and programs. However, based on the result of observation and interview, it was found that the problem of the interior materials are not in accordance with the MoEF's planned environmental approach. The purpose of this study is to examine the requirements of ecological materials suitable for the interior for the MoEF building, to create a sustainable interior by incorporating ecological materials, and to increase awareness and understanding of environmental materials among interior designers and other stakeholders. The research method used was a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection focused on designers' attitudes towards eco-friendly design. Limitations of this study include the emphasis on the adoption of sustainable interior materials only, without any major changes to the structure. This research considers the technical, economic, and aesthetic aspects of ecological material selection. It also provides practical guidance on how to reduce environmental impact through the use of ecological materials in interiors, creating a more sustainable interior environment. Keywords : ecology, environmentally friendly, interior material, KLHK graha building, sustainable

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the design aspects of working environment based on the experience of people with disability. The first floor of Komisi Nasional Disabilitas (KND) workspace which used by National Commission for Disabilities as its secretariat, will be the priority case of this study. The study examine how to implement the inclusive design concept in the workplace focus on realizing equal opportunities in the implementation of Respect, Protection and Fulfillment of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The research use qualitative approach, include the use of methods such as in-depth interviews, participant observation, architectural and interior elements’ measurement based on Universal Design and Deaf Space principles. Quantitative approach is also applied by using questioners’ assessment for measuring values of environment by way of comparison with the regulations of Universal Design and Deaf Space guidelines. The results shows that personal experience of people with disability plays important role to evaluate their environment. The meaning of inclusive and accessible environment can be vary based on the participants’ interpretation. Yet during the participant observation, the study reveals that the building and interior spaces of KND have not been designed to meet the principles of universal design and deaf space. The participants mostly have done some physical adjustment and spatial/furniture arrangements to meet their personal conditions, needs, and preference to carry out their daily activities independently. In conclusion, this research proposes design parameters from the perspective of the participants elaborated with the principles Universal design and Deaf Space in effort to increase inclusivity for all users.
